Yes, the real question is ... WHY? My cynicism overwhelms me on a piece of news like this. WHY on earth would some ex-H's want to WASTE their time meeting with some people who will never budge an inch even when they are dead wrong? If these people want back in, they'll need to crawl on their hands and knees begging forgiveness unconditionally. And if they don't want back in, I don't know why they would bother with a meeting. Maybe they are just gluttons for punishment.
Is it possible that the H preachers realize that their hands are still dirty from this work and they are attempting to wash their hands from it? It seems like it comes back to bite them back over and over again. LM
Greely was a special thing. From good sources I was informed that the reason it happened like before noon one day was this; they were told that the reason the thing was processed extremely fast was that it was of such nature that it would spread through their church like wild-fire and that they were afraid that they would lose the whole thing.
It was pretty much done as a lump thing without individual considerations unless the individual immediately recanted at some sort of level.
Why meet? I don't know unless it's thought to be a better position not to be judged by family and friends than to be judged. I am not aware of anyone trying to reunite. I would say that one would have to be quite large to make the effort to meet in this way.
It gets complicated to mingle with family or friends when the air is charged with judgments. I do not want to reunite either but I do wish that the judgments would end.
If this were to happen - it would taken some openness on both 'sides' of the table, wouldn't it?
As a Greeleyite (then and now) - I can testify that there was a lot of pain in Greeley - but I also know that there is very little, if any, resentment left 30 years later. Most (perhaps all - but there are some I do not have a connection with any longer) Greeleyites that were involved in that mass excommunication have moved on with their lives and are busy living their lives and following God's guidance in their lives. I can also say that things were handled very differently in different individual families. I've alluded to this in the past before. Some families continued to feel the love of their extended H families even as they took on the 'Ex' title. Others were shunned unmercifully and may still be hassled over their happily leaving the coG.
A meeting between coG ministers and excommunicated Greeleyites would indeed be something of note - and if that were to occur I would have just one final comment. Praise God!
They met at Hillsboro so they could hightail it up to Brookeville Hotel in Abilene afterwards for fried chicken. Just hope they don't get seated in the same dining room.
