An Analogy for Something Useful and Enduring

Acquiring something useful and enduring in life is like a road that gets worse and worse. At first it is well used and maintained. Then it goes down to a lane where maybe a summer pasture is or an old striper oil well. And from there the lane is grown over with tall grasses and the young saplings have extended their reach over the road. And beyond, the lane fizzles out to something abandoned......like a field gone back to grass or a fence line with a crumbling foundation beside it. Maybe the proprietor is old and tired and don't venture out anymore and his whole time is now spent existing life. Anyway it's a lonely place at the end of the road and nobody goes there anymore. Still it is quiet there and beautiful, and the birds sing in the field. And when one leaves there, they carry back with them to the main road, something they know is real and true.

Re: An Analogy for Something Useful and Enduring

I was down that road today on my quad. Going further through the overgrown bushes I came upon an old abandoned homestead. Most of the building was falling down and there were a lot of shotgun holes where someone had been having some fun. A few very old bottles still scattered around an old campfire site.

In the middle of what had been a fine parlour or living room, a large aspen had spread it's branches. the tree had taken shelter in the old building, but had now grown through the roof and some windows. I thought how this tree had become part of its shelter while growing through it and bigger than it.

You know Peter, these kinds of experiences usually have some artistic expression in them, which was a lot of what I was getting at and you showed.
