The new forums are up

The address is here:

http://squalorsurvivors.com/community

The "join" link to register is in the top-right corner.

There will be a few changes to get used to. I haven't moved over all the smilies yet, and I will be adding them from smallest to largest - if a smilie is too big and breaks the display, I'll be leaving it out.

There isn't a Return to Index link in this new format - instead there is a "breadcrumb trail" at the tol of each thread, so to return to a forum's index, you would click the name of the forum in the breadcrumbs.

The new forums map one-to-one to the current ones, i.e. you have the same four forums.

It looks like you can only include one image per post, and you do it as an attachment. You insert the image into the box by browsing to it on your hard drive. The image will display inline in the post, but when I tested it, I couldn't see it at the preview stage.

To have a blog in the new community, at the moment you have to request one from me in the Oh, Pigpen forum, until I get a plugin installed which will apparently let new users enable a blog for themselves. The same goes for the photogallery. At the moment I don't have any formal policy for storage limits for the photo galleries... I'm adopting a wait and see approach.

The Squalor Survivors Network 54 forums will be closed from Oct 1 to new postings but will remain online for archival purposes.

On the page I linked to above, there is a link back to the Network 54 chat room. The link won't show how many users are in the chatroom, sorry. I would like a better chat room solution, but for the moment I think the new forum CMS will keep me busy enough.

Love,
pigpen

Sorry I forgot how the N54 code stuffs up existing links if you later edit the post!

How are they are a jumble?

September 30 2005, 3:21 PM

i.e. is it the display that is all mixed up, which would make it a CSS problem, or does everything literally NOT WORK, i.e. if you click on a button (wherever it appears on your screen) nothing happens.

Because my understanding is that .NET is platform independent... If it is a CSS problem, it is fixable, although I foresee problems in that I can't emulate an Older Apple with OS 9.1. If the ASP.NET code doesn't work on your computer then ... actually, I don't know what to do in that case!

Cheers,
pigpen

I'm really cool on my newer iMac which has OSX.

But the older one shows green bars covering the text. I cannot see enough to navigate the site.

Does this mean if you don't or cant log on, you can't post?

September 30 2005, 4:33 PM

Say it isn't so Pigpen! My pc/server will not allow me to log in or join. If I am not allowed to post or reply on SS, I am DOOMED! (*Slinking away to moan....*)

Could have been a caching issue

September 30 2005, 7:49 PM

There are zillions of places ASP.NET can cache stuff...okay maybe not ZILLIONS, but 5, 6..9? Code can be cached on the server or at any server in between, as well as your browser, it can be cached in the Session Object, the Application Object, and, uh, you'd think I'd remember this better...!

So it could have been a caching issue, just not in your browser cache.

Cheers,
pigpen
