About the pollcat poll...

by

The question is how long it would take to undo the "damage" by the Clinton Presidency if Conservatives take the House, Senate and Presidency in 2000.

If you consider a strong economy with record low inflation and outstanding economic indicators at a time when the stock market is at an all time high, unemployment near record lows, and consumer confidence strong as "damage" then I would have to agree that it sure won't take Conservatives long at all to undo that. :)

by Mega Hurts

James, get your head out of your jackass! Look around and tell me where all this great economic growth and high unemployment has helped Dickenson County one smidgen. Try selling your propoganda to the thousands of people in this county who are unemployed or who are standing behind a cash register or burger grill because they can't find anything else. Tell this crap to the hundreds of people who lose their jobs each month in this county and are left scratching their heads about what to do and where to go to keep the wolves from the door. Tell your stock market brags to the 95% of people in this county who couldn't afford to buy one share of stock even if they wanted to because they are struggling just to pay their bills and all the frigging taxes liberals have imposed on anyone with ambition enough to work for a living. Seems to me things around here couldn't get much worse if congress was overflowing with conservatives. Hell, even Gerald Gray's trees and bunnies and fish and flowers are leaving! Outstanding economic indicators my ass!

All politics is local

by

Dickenson County has failed to prosper despite (not because of) the nationwide economic boom. You are absolutely right when you describe Dickenson County and say that it has not benefited greatly from it. But were we any better off under a Republican president?

Maybe part of the problem is that even most of the politicians elected to represent us probably can't find Dickenson County on a map, let alone give a damn about how to fix the problems around here. In that I include Democrats and Republican politicians.

Yes the bunnies and fish and flowers are leaving. The rest of the coal is leaving, the rest of the natural gas is leaving, the timber is leaving... and true to form, Dickenson County will get little if any net benefit from it. What is going to be left? Are the politicians asleep at the wheel?

It's not Bill Clinton that's the problem. The problem is a little closer to home. Until we elect politicians who have the good sense to stop this nonsense and the integrity not to be bribed out of action and the geographical skill to locate our county on a map, then we will still have the same problems no matter who we have warming the chair in the oval office and no matter if you fill the congress with nothing but Republicans.

Democrats generally don't like good economic times because it means more people are doing well financially and in less need of the government teat. Funny that you should boast about the good economic times now but I understand why you and other democrats want to praise Clinton because of it. The really funny thing is that if this economic good time had happened nine years ago you would have been right on the bandwagon with the other democrats crying about how only the rich get richer and how they aren't paying their fair share of taxes and about how decadent and greedy it is for so many to benefit from a soaring stock market and about how this tide didn't raise all ships, etc., etc., etc.

A rising tide..

by

Now now, are we a little jealous that the greatest economic times have come under a Democrat president?

Believe me, I know as well as you that Clinton had little to do with that expansion, but nonetheless the BMIC at the white house gets all the blame when the economy is sour (i.e. George Bush) so he also gets the credit when it is good.

And it is hard to deny that the economy nationwide is very good.

The rising tide still hasn't lifted all boats, but then again at least it isn't the Reagan years again when the rising tide lifted only the yachts.

I won't be led into doing something I think is not right even for my party. Being faithful to your party doesn't mean being blind.

The election is over so it's time to get over all of this if you ever want the party to heal. Otherwise, the wounds that were opened this year will take decades to heal, leaving the party in a very vulnerable position.

I hope that doesn't happen. It sure doesn't have to.

by

Last time I looked he was the winner. The people made their choice and they chose Joe, there isn't anything wrong with that. They chose him 8 years ago and had the right to do it again, and they did.

That isn't saying a thing in the world against Larkin Turner. You should be proud of how you voted.. it was your right to do so. The people who voted for Joe are also proud of how we voted.

Larkin in my opinion would be a good candidate for an office if it ever comes open. It just isn't a good idea to challenge a popular incumbent. That is a rule of politics. Now the best thing to do would be to forget about it and try to mend the fences.

I have seen Larkin since then and he shook my hand like a man. I wish him the best. I never had the first thing against him, and I said so in my letter to the paper.

There is no way that Republicans can be blamed for Fern Rose's defeat. There aren't enough people in this county who call themselves Republicans to even come up to the number of votes she received. The main stream, die-hard Republicans did not vote for Joe Tate. They voted for Fern Rose. I think that's one of the main problems in this county..

by

In my humble opinion, I believe that there are a certain few people in each party who think they can control the party. It was these people who controlled the delegate selection process, and I didn't go along with it. Many Democrats didn't go along with it. It wasn't just about Joe Tate.

I will ask you like I asked everyone else: Which is worse? Telling everyone you are for Joe Tate and never making any other pretense or ACTING like you are for Larkin Turner and then voting for Joe when the curtain was closed?

Hundreds upon hundreds of Democrats cast their votes for Joe Tate this year, with Larkin's signs in their yards. You and I know this to be a fact. Some of them wouldn't tell you, I did.

I voted my conscience and never pretended otherwise. In my opinion, that is better than pretending just to keep favor with the party. There are many people I know who are now in positions of influence in the party who voted for Joe Tate although they couldn't tell it in public. Where is the criticism of them?

Hey, let's not forget........

by herbwoman

That even working two jobs, usually neither one of them provides benefits, so no health insurance, dental, medical, vision care, and no paid holidays, no overtime, etc....

"You load 16 tons, whaddya get? Another day older and deeper in debt.
St. Peter, don'tcha call me, 'cause I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store."

Just exactly what has changed for the better in the economic climate of the far Southwest Virginia mountains?

IMHO -

Now you have 'chip mills' wanting to come in and finish devastating what is left of the natural beauty of Dickenson County? This won't provide enough jobs to justify destroying the rest of the county. Have you 'chip mill' supporters ever visited a site after a 'chip mill' has come and gone? I HAVE!!!!! Wanna know the truth?

It looked like what was left of Heroshima, after the bomb. There was only small scrub left, and the hills had already begun to errode into the creek, the creek has already begun to fill up with silt, the forest soil was nearly gone, and there was NO COVER FOR WILDLIFE AT ALL!!!

Oh, and let's not forget the 'reclaimation' the mills did. They set out tiny White Pine seedlings, 4 to 5 inches tall. These will NOT take the place of decidious forests! They will provide no food or cover for wildlife! And in a lot of places, even these pitiful little trees had washed down onto the creek beds, where they were being drowned in a plethera of water and silt!

So there goes your hunting, fishing, and scenic beauty, all in one fell swoop. If you really and truly think that chip mills are the answer to the economic problems in the county today, then you need to have your level of awareness raised quite a bit!

Someone posted that we, Dickenson County, have made the wrong choices a lot of the time. There is a good reason behind her words. Unless you communicate with each other, share information, and enlighten people with the information that they need to make good choices, the same thinking will continue to prevail, and the same self-fulfilling prophecies will continue to come into being.

P.S. Oh, by the way, there IS NO Santa Claus, NO Tooth Fairy, and Elves DON'T do housework no matter how much food you leave out for them!

I Think You Know What Damage They've Done...

by nemesis

...But are just playing the Devil's Advocate; but just in case you lead a sheltered life, please allow me to point out a few minor things the Clinton Administration has done to damage our country.

The office of President is no longer admired.

Marital infidelity is now seen as something that everyone engages in.

Lying is no longer considered wrong, even if you do it under oath.

Oral sex is not really sex but is just foreplay.

Guns kill people so they should be taken away from law-abiding citizens.

The military has purposely become more effeminate and even if we could fight two wars simultaneously, we probably would lose both.

It's okay to preach hatred of other races if you are a minority or a liberal.

National sovereignty doesn't matter if the UN says so.

National security secrets can be bought.

The Clinton Administration is for sale.

Power means everything.

Individual rights don't matter.

Homosexuality is the preferred method of birth control.

All abortion is great.

The police are bad.

And I could go on and on, but I'm sure you could add some of your own.

Hiya Donna,

Pardon me if I tell you stuff you already know.

You can find info on almost any subject on the internet by going to a search engine. A few of my favorites are:

All you have to do is go to one of these sites or any other search engine and type in whatever it is you are seeking info about into the "Search" box. For example, I went to a couple of these sites, typed in "Jacob Riis" and voila! got a whole bunch of sites listed about Jacob Riis and Jacob A. Riis.

I could not find a photo of Jacob Riis himself. He was a photojournalist... like many photographers, I suspect he stayed _behind_ the camera most of the time. If you are looking for some of the famous photos taken by Riis, here are some good sites:

Good luck with your research project!

Clinton Blows Entire Paycheck

by nemesis

WASHINGTON, DC--After refusing
comment on the matter for days, President
Clinton finally admitted Monday that he blew
his most recent paycheck, failing to deposit it
into the joint checking account he shares with
his wife and instead spending it on a variety of
items of dubious necessity.

"My fellow Americans, I stand before you
to confess that it is all gone," a contrite Clinton
said in a televised address. "I honestly did not
think I was buying all that much stuff; it just
somehow added up. But I want to assure you
that I am still deeply committed to fiscal
responsibility and will be sure to keep better track of my money in the future."

Clinton said he had intended to deposit the paycheck, but a series of unforeseen circumstances
caused him to alter his plan.

"No sooner did Payroll send my check to the Oval Office than Hillary called, saying that right
after work I should run to the bank before it closes, and then swing by Safeway to get some
groceries," Clinton said. "Well, I forgot that it's a bad idea to go shopping while you're hungry,
because I wound up spending almost $160."

Shortly after departing Safeway, Clinton started to head back to the White House. But when
he noticed a massive traffic bottleneck on Virginia Avenue, he decided to "wait it out" at the nearby
Heritage Ridge shopping mall.

Clinton admitted to making several "impromptu" purchases while at the mall, including a socket
wrench set at Sears, a CD tower at Musicland, a copy of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged
Me at Suncoast Motion Picture Company, a stuffed Grinch doll at Pam's Hallmark, and a copy of
Tuesdays With Morrie and the latest issue of Cycle World magazine at B. Dalton.

Further complicating matters for Clinton, an anonymous White House source claims that the
president is withholding information about additional shopping he did. According to the source,
after leaving the mall, Clinton stopped at a Mobil station to buy gas and, while in the MobilMart
convenience store, spent an additional $27.11 on a number of impulse purchases, including a set of
Yosemite Sam "Back Off!" mudflaps, a Best Of Jerry Reed cassette, a pack of Swisher Sweets
and a two-liter bottle of Surge.

"These charges are patently false," Clinton said. "Yes, I did stop at the Mobil station on 10th.
But I only purchased gas and a single 12-ounce can of Surge. And some Twizzlers. But I did not
buy any of the items I am accused of buying, and I would easily be able to prove it if not for the
fact that, just as millions of Americans do every day, I threw out my receipt."

Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) called the president's blown paycheck "yet another
example of liberal overspending."

"After leaving the mall, the president stopped at Target, where he bought a Hamilton Beach
electric beverage warmer," Lott said. "Yet during a September trip to an Alexandria, VA,
Montgomery Ward, Mr. Clinton was seen buying a very similar Sunbeam electric beverage
warmer. Does the White House really need two beverage warmers? It certainly didn't at any time
during the Reagan-Bush Era."

Conservative columnist Cal Thomas was particularly critical of Clinton's Safeway purchases.

"[Clinton] bought the Louis Rich-brand turkey roast, and had he bothered to look at one of the
hundreds of flyers littering the store's entrance area, he would have found a 25 cents-off coupon for
Jennie-O turkey roast, which is practically the same thing. And why must he always buy Charmin
toilet paper, when Scottissue is just as good but cheaper and has even more sheets per roll?"

"I want to assure the American people that during my overspending spree, not a penny of
taxpayer money was used," Clinton said. "There is no cause for public alarm, and this matter will be
dealt with privately by Hillary and myself."

Whether the Clintons will attempt to return the Hamilton Beach electric beverage warmer was
unknown as of press time.

Accident At Oak Ridge Shuts Down Weapons Plant

by nemesis

OAK RIDGE - This East Tennessee community that produced the
atomic bomb that ended World War II was rudely reminded
Wednesday that nuclear arms are not yet history.

In one of its massive plants, labeled simply Y-12, a volatile
sodium-potassium mixture spilled into the bottom of a furnace
containing depleted uranium and exploded, injuring 10 workers.

The mixture is used as a cooling agent when casting nuclear
warheads at the facility where the United States still builds weapons
of mass destruction.

Lockheed Martin Energy Systems operates the Y-12 facility for the
Department of Energy at this site of the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory.

Although workers were exposed to "limited amounts" of radioactive
contamination, plant officials said, nothing harmful to the public
escaped beyond the site.

Some 50 persons were evacuated from the million-square-foot
building, which was sealed off for investigation.

On the same day, as if to underscore the continued threat of nuclear
war more than half a century after America dropped the first atomic
bomb, the Tennessee Valley Authority approved a contract for it to
manufacture the nuclear-bomb material tritium.

It is the first time the radioactive gas that enhances the explosive
power of nuclear bombs will be produced by a civilian facility.

The work is expected to be done mainly at a TVA power plant near
Oak Ridge.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel quoted Ralph Hutchison of the Oak
Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance, which opposes nuclear
proliferation:

"This is a significant step in continuing the arms race."

The explosion at the Oak Ridge nuclear-warhead plant and TVA's
entry into nuclear-bomb building came only a day after the 58th
anniversary of the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

TVA also played a major role in America's victory in World War II.

Its Norris Dam, near Knoxville, was completed just in time to
generate the enormous amounts of electrical energy required to
power the Oak Ridge atomic-bomb facilities.

It was also TVA power that made possible the mass-production of
sheet aluminum at Alcoa, a few miles south of Knoxville, that went
into the manufacture of America's armada of war planes.

Yeltsin Warning To Clinton "Russia has a complete arsenal of nuclear weapons"

by nemesis

A cold war of words: Russian President Boris Yeltsin in China on Thursday
blasted U.S. President Bill Clinton over attempts "to put pressure on
Russia" over Chechnya, noting that Moscow has a nuclear potential.

"Bill Clinton permitted himself yesterday to forget by a second, by a
minute, by half-a-minute what Russia means and that Russia has a complete
arsenal of nuclear weapons," said Yeltsin in Beijing.

"We shall dictate the world how to live rather than Mr. Clinton alone."

The Chechen problem is Russia's internal matter, Chinese Foreign Ministry
spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue added.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Zhang said that Chechnya is part
of Russia, and China understands and supports Russia's efforts aimed at
preserving unity and territorial integrity of the country.

Boris Yeltsin and China President Jiang Zemin and their wives met for a
family dinner in Beijing on Thursday.

The informal summit between Yeltsin and Jiang was held at one of the most
picturesque places of Beijing -- the Diaotai residence.

Under this cozy atmosphere, the first phrase, addressed by Yeltsin on
Thursday to the Chinese head of state: "How do you do, my dear old
friend."

Just as... an envoy of Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov Thursday accused
Russia of using chemical weapons!

"There are people with blisters covering their bodies, who complain of
abnormal drowsiness, but we do not know what kind of gas was used,"
Saidhassan Abumuslumov told a news conference in Istanbul. He said
chemical weapons were used on the night of Dec. 5 in two areas of Grozny.

Witnesses reported seeing "a strange yellow smog" when some bombs
exploded.

The folk duo performing this traditional song is obscure. They are produced out of Atlanta. Posted it just because it is one of my favorite contemporary versions of an old favorite. They currently offer the song for free download in mp3 format. If anyone likes it, I'll post the link.

Which way do we go?

by It seems to me

I've been reading the posts over the past two days and it's a little confused if you ask me. Several post want industry to come into the county and several talk about the "damn" chipmill. The chipmill is the only industry we have had to come into the county and its getting a bad rap. The chipmill it's self isn't going to hurt the county the uncontrolled logging or unregulated logging is where the county will suffer. If regulation were set forth on the logging the county would be better off. The chipmill provides good jobs and the way it is set up there is very little if any harm that can come from it.
And no I am not employed by the chipmill or the parent company in any way but I have looked at the mill in some detail for my own benifit.

My Take

by Net Diva

Whatever the issue, my fairly lengthy experience in these parts tells me that we are always our own worst enemy. For reasons that are not clear to me, we unerringly make the wrong choices almost every time. A sure sign of insanity is when a person keeps doing the same thing over and over again but keeps expecting different results. Unfortunately, I think that applies to the people of Dickenson County.

Three Sentenced to Death for Child Sacrifice

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - An Ethiopian court sentenced a
flour mill owner, a sorceress and her friend to death for
murdering a seven-year-old girl in a witchcraft rite, the state-run
Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported on Tuesday.

Struggling miller Abametcha Abageda was so desperate to rid
himself of the gremlins in his malfunctioning mill that he sought
the advice of a local sorceress, the court heard.

Shenfo Alenchena, the sorceress, told him the only way out of
his problems was to sacrifice a suitable girl child and sprinkle
her blood on the floor of the mill and mill house.

She then paid four people $2.40 each to kidnap such a child
and take her to Abametcha. The four kidnappers were all given
life sentences when the verdicts were read on Monday.

Mitiku Minota, a friend of the sorceress, took part in the killing.

Big Stone Gap Family Outraged At Killers' Plea Bargain

by nemesis

SUSSEX, Va. (AP) -- Two men originally charged with capital murder in the
killing of a Waverly police officer pleaded guilty to lesser charges Wednesday,
prompting outrage from relatives of the victim.

Terence Richardson, 28, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for his role
in the April 1998 shooting death of Officer Allen W. Gibson. Ferrone Claiborne,
23, pleaded guilty to acting as an accessory after the fact to involuntary
manslaughter, a misdemeanor.

Richardson faces up to 10 years in prison and Claiborne a maximum of 12
months in jail when they are sentenced March 8. Richardson was jailed and
Claiborne was released on $100,000 bond after the hearing in Sussex County
Circuit Court.

"I feel very lucky,'' Claiborne said as he left the courthouse. "I feel like I've been
blessed.''

The slain officer's mother called the prosecutor a coward and tearfully told
reporters that her family had pleaded with him to pursue murder charges even it
meant risking that the two defendants could be acquitted.

"My son's little girl, who is 10 years old, begged and cried to the
commonwealth's attorney, David Chappell, today, 'please, fight it, fight for my
daddy, why don't you want to fight for my daddy?''' said Susie Gibson. "And he
sits there and hangs his head.''

Chappell, who did not seek re-election last month, did not make himself
available for comment.

Gibson, 25, was shot with his own weapon in a wooded area behind an
apartment complex while on patrol in Waverly, a town of 2,500 about 50 miles
southeast of Richmond. He described his attackers to fellow officers but died
two hours later at a hospital.

Chappell told the court that if the case had the case gone to trial, he would have
called to the stand the officers who found Gibson and heard his description of
the men, as well as a state forensics expert who had concluded the gun was
fired from as close as three inches, perhaps as the men wrestled for the
weapon.

Ms. Gibson said the family had first heard there might be a plea bargain on
Tuesday, as they were preparing to travel to the trial from their home in far
southwest Virginia's Big Stone Gap.

"The commonwealth's attorney here totally let us down and let my son down,''
she said. "My son died for nothing.''

"You don't turn a gun on somebody and pull the trigger and have it be an
accident,'' said Doug Gibson, the victim's brother. "If my brother was standing
here today he would say that the County of Sussex has really let him down. He
would be ashamed to think that he ever set foot in the County of Sussex to ever
try to be a law enforcement officer. Because it's just been a disgrace. It's been a
disgrace for 18 months for my family.''

Richardson and Claiborne were arrested within days of the shooting. They have
already spent nine months in jail.

Claiborne's attorney, Michael Morchower, said he and his client felt sympathy
for the officer's family.

"He didn't deserve to die in the line of duty, but this young man had nothing to
do with it,'' Morchower said.

Warren B. Sturrup, chief of Waverly's six-man police department, said he was
saddened by the agreement.

"I know that I'm very disappointed about it and I know that I'm not the only one,''
he said.

Brian Wills' Take On The Thomas Jones Snub

by nemesis

Heisman Trophy runs past
Cavs' Thomas Jones

By BRIAN WILLS

The people who vote on the finalists for college
football’s most coveted achievement award, the
Heisman Trophy, recently sent a rather unfortunate
message. By selecting four quarterbacks to go with
the one running back who will actually walk (no,
run) away with the trophy, they snubbed one of the
true class acts in the game today.

Among those not selected as finalists was the
University of Virginia’s exceptional athlete and
outstanding citizen Thomas Jones.

To put things in perspective, lest someone assume
that I am a University of Virginia enthusiast blinded
by school loyalty, I will remind readers of what
many of them will already know. I obtained two of
my three degrees from the University of Georgia
and am a Bulldog fan first and foremost, through
and through. It is not even that Jones is a native of
neighboring Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

Simply put, given his performance on and off the
field, Jones should have been invited to the
Downtown Athletic Club ceremonies. No
self-respecting Heisman voter should have left him
off the ballot, even if that person placed the U.Va.
product third on the list.

Here is at least part of the case for this young man:

He is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s
single-season rushing leader, with an ACC record
four 200 yard games. He has six such games to his
credit and 18 100-yard performances over the
course of his collegiate career.

He is in the top ranks nationally in all-purpose
yards, achieving in one game the phenomenal mark
of 200 + yards rushing and 100 + yards receiving.

He is ranked third nationally in rushing with 1,798
yards on 334 carries and 17 touchdowns. This gives
him an average of 5.38 yards per carry, which is
only slightly less than the average of the highly
touted Wisconsin running back Ron Dayne.
Likewise, Jones has only two fewer touchdowns on
the ground than Dayne. Furthermore, less than 100
yards rushing separate the two this year.

Finally, and just as important, Thomas Jones is an
excellent student/athlete. He is also a very fine
young man. College football, and most assuredly the
professional ranks, sorely need more like him.

It is truly surprising that the Heisman voters thought
four quarterbacks superior in quality to another
running back. It is worse that the choice came
because of team records. The University of Virginia
finished its season at 7-4. This is exactly what
Georgia Tech’s record would have been except for
such blatantly poor officiating in the Ga.
Tech-Georgia game that it led to the suspension of a
crew of officials. What is more, Virginia’s Thomas
Jones squad beat Georgia Tech’s Joe Hamilton
squad 45-38. Hamilton got the Heisman nod; Jones
did not.

Other points could be made concerning other
finalists, but the key is that Jones should have been
one of the top five Heisman hopefuls and he will not
be. The Heisman Memorial Trophy is supposed to
be given to the outstanding college football player in
the country. Certainly, Thomas Jones has proven he
belongs in that select company.

Then, again, perhaps this snub is actually going to be
good for Jones. He will not have to live up to the
Heisman hype when he goes to the National
Football League. He can let his performance there
speak for itself. When all is said and done, I am
willing to bet that he will have a longer and more
productive career in the professional ranks than the
person who wins the award this year.

Brian Wills is chairman of the Department of
History and Philosophy at the University of
Virginia’s College at Wise.

by Vol Fan

Some of us still remember the results of a similar snub regarding Peyton Manning a few years age. It seems that being the best football player and the best person does not matter to the voters of this outdated award. Mr Manning is doing quite well without the trophy, and I am sure that Mr. Jones will also. Sometimes the best person is overlooked. Its a sad commentary.

NUMBER 1: It is not my fault! It is not my pc!
I know of at least 6 other Net Access customers who have the same problems!

NUMBER 2: Disconnects! Disconnects! Disconnects! As many as 4 or 5 in a three to five minute period. Disconnects while updating virus programs! Disconnects while playing an online game! Not really important, you say...I'm paying for it and my access is supposed to be unlimited!

NUMBER 3: It is not my fault! It is not my phone line.

NUMBER 4: A connection speed of 57,000 is a lie and Net Access has to know it!

NUMBER 5: It is not my fault! My modem is working just fine!

NUMBER 6: Downloading at 430 bytes per second is a joke! We should be getting a minimum of 3 to 4 KB a second! At this rate, there are more viruses created in the time it takes us to update our virus programs than the number of KBs we're getting per second!

NUMBER 7: It is not my fault! This excuse is getting old...like about 3 years old! It is your fault, Net Access.

NUMBER 8: It seems everytime NA expands their service area, we get a pile of liberal! Reminds me of the way Monica was figuratively screwed by someone!

NUMBER 9: It is not my fault! Oh, you say you've changed the DNS numbers and forgot to tell any of us! So maybe we'll connect and maybe we won't. Oh, the band width or whatever it is that comes or goes this way is shared by how many resulting in a completely dead line for several minutes. Then, all of a sudden, we get enough surge of juice to make us happy!

NUMBER 10: It is your fault, NET ACCESS!

I'm sending this list to Net Access. You better send one, too, because if you don't, none of us will have access worth two cents in two weeks. I don't know why people won't complain...It seems that most have to be unable to get online at all before they think something is wrong. Oh, and I left one complaint out...Over 200 dials to get on in the evenings! It is not my fault! Unless a lot complain the tech support guys will convince you it's YOUR FAULT!

Well, it's like this

by Citizen Kane

First, what do you mean by saying 'now that the democrats control the BOS'? Where have you been the past four years while they have been in control? Leadership for the 21st Century was their big promise in the election. Well, they've got control of the board for another four years so we'll just see what kind of leadership we voted for. But don't hold your breath expecting and waiting on much of anything to take place. This county will be in the same pitiful condition at the end of 2003 as it is today. Just wait and see if what I'm saying isn't true.

The other thing I want to mention is the CEDA. Surely you've heard of that fine organization to which Dickenson County has contributed millions of dollars. Their headquarters are in Lebanon and they are charged with the responsibility of recruiting industry into the coalfield area. Trouble is, all their efforts seem to have benefited only Russell County. Now I wonder why. I mean, just because their office is in Lebanon and just because most, if not all, of their big wigs are Russell County residends shouldn't account for that, should it? Wonder why Russell County today has more jobs in the industry/manufacturing sector than they do in mining? I guess the eight or so industries that CEDA brought into Russell County might have something to do with the answer. We're getting screwed by elected and non-elected officials alike and we deserve it.

About CEDA

by Net Diva

The source of funding for the Coalfield Economic Development Authority (CEDA) is coal severance taxes. Wonder how much coal is taxed in Russell County as compared to Dickenson Co.? In the days before CEDA, Dickenson Co. got all it's own coal tax revenues and could spend it in Dickenson County for the benefit of Dickenson Co. Now, part of that money goes directly to CEDA and who benefits? Quite obviously it isn't Dickenson County! Who cares? Quite obviously not nearly enough people in Dickenson Co. give a damn because the majority continues to vote for the same people who initiated this sorry program.

Who is in charge?

by Caliburn

That is right. It is the hairdresser. Also the BOS has been controlled by the Democrats for the past 8 years. Prior to that the Republicans acquired the land for the Industrial park, the commitment for the shell building, the money for the access road, the acquisition of the State Prison, the construction of Donnkenney, the formation of an active bipartisan economic development committee and was on the way to making real progress in industrial development. Then the Democrats took control of the entire county government and, as you can see, have wasted the past eight years. If Boucher can't work with the Democrats then who the hell can he work with. Maybe he realizes that all he has to do is talk about the Haysi dam (remember the funding is in place-Ha!Ha!) and the damn Democrats and half the stupid Republicans will vote for him regardless of what he does. God bless the hairdresser. She may be our best hope.

What was actor James Stewart's name after he changed it?

Stewart Granger. Stewart Granger's real name was James Stewart, but there was already a popular Hollywood actor with the same name, so something had to be be done, and in Hollywood, it's first come- first serve.

The blue song was indeed Joni Mitchell, composer and performer. Kia was very close with her guess. Judy Collins was one of Joni's early folk music influences. They eventually connected musically as Judy recorded several Joni originals.

I uploaded a new RA file of Christmas music but the quality sucked. Will try to make an improved file later tonight.

For Golfers

by AhMT

A couple of woman were playing golf one sunny Saturday morning. The first of the twosome teed
off and watched in horror as her ball headed directly toward a foursome of men playing the next hole.Indeed, the ball hit one of the men, and he immediately clasped his hands together at his crotch, fell to the ground and proceeded to roll around in evident agony. The woman rushed down to the man and immediately began to apologize. She said, "Please allow me to help. I'm a physical therapist and I know I could relieve your pain if you'd allow." "Ummph, oooh, nnooo,I'll be all right...I'll be fine in a few minutes,"he replied
breathlessly as he remained in the fetal position still clasping his hands together at his crotch. But she persisted, and he finally allowed her to help him. She gently took his hands away and laid them to the side, she loosened his pants, and put her hands inside. She began to massage him. She then asked him, "How does that feel?" To which he replied, "It feels great, but my thumb still hurts like hell."

Who DIDN'T See This Coming? U.S. To Sue Gun Industry!!!

by nemesis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Clinton administration said
on Tuesday it would file a class action lawsuit against the gun
industry next year unless manufacturers agree to make major
changes in the way they market and distribute guns.

Administration officials said the U.S. Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD) is readying a lawsuit on behalf
of 3,200 public housing authorities around the country to
recover the costs associated with gun violence, estimated at
around $1 billion a year.

While the sum is significant, one HUD official said the lawsuit's
"primary interest will be to change the way the gun industry
does business."

Twenty-eight cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles and San
Francisco, already have sued makers of handguns to get
reimbursement for municipal spending related to gun violence --
on police and emergency medical services, for example.

But the administration felt a more national approach was
needed, said the HUD official.

"This is a massive problem that is facing the United States," the
official said. "There is an epidemic of gun violence. Somewhere
close to 100 people every day are dying of gun violence."

More than 600,000 crimes are committed each year involving
guns, and 30,000 people die each year due to gun-related
violence, the official said, citing Justice Department statistics.

"The federal government believes the problems that have been
identified are real ones, and they are not limited to the 28
entities that have sued," he said. "They are problems of a
national scope."

Administration officials said the federal class action lawsuit was
intended to put pressure on the gun industry to settle the
existing lawsuits and agree to a series of reforms.

The federal government wanted gun manufacturers to take
responsibility for its chain of distribution and cut off dealers
whose guns wind up being used in crimes, officials said.

It also wanted manufacturers to adopt use of child safety locks
and to stop targeting advertising to criminals and children, they
said.

"Ultimately, we would like the gun industry to settle their suits
with the cities and we would like to achieve changes in the way
they market and distribute guns to reduce the chances of guns
getting into the wrong hands," said one White House official.

"What we hope is that it will encourage them to come to the
table and to alter their behavior," he said.

Administration officials said HUD was taking the lead on the
lawsuit with President Clinton's explicit blessing.

"The president believes we've got to take action in this country
to reduce the availability of guns to criminals, to children, to
others who should not have them," the White House official
said. "He has fought for changes in the law and he'll continue to
make this a priority," the official added.

Clinton has pushed hard for Congress to adopt gun control
measures and increase funding for law enforcement of existing
gun laws. In September, he offered cities across the nation $15
million to buy back and destroy about 300,000 guns.

One Justice Department official said HUD had been in talks
with public housing authorities for some time, and the lawsuit
was being finalized now, although they still hoped that gun
manufacturers would seek a settlement.

"They have a suit ready to go," the official said.

Clinton administration officials first disclosed that HUD was
considering suing the gun industry last July.

A federal class action lawsuit against gun manufacturers follows
on the heels of a major lawsuit filed earlier this year against the
tobacco industry to recover much of the $20 billion spent by
the federal government each year on smoking-related illnesses.

From the way this story reads, it seems like the government is suing because they expect the gun manufacturers to cave in to their pressure and settle. That's just like the guy that taps your rear bumper and then sues you for whiplash. I hope the gun manufacturers have enough guts to fight this.

Vick Was Invited But Jones Wasn't?!?!?

This is hard to believe. Both are great players but Vick had a much better team to surround him. Jones should definitely have been invited to the ceremony. Bobby Bowden of Florida State said of Thomas Jones, paraphrasing here, "We wanted to do everything possible to keep him under 100 yards, and he ends up working on 200. I don't think there's any better running back in the country."

Bowden's comments have been the mantra of...

coaches and newscasters alike this year, in reference to Thomas Jones. I, too, am somewhat perplexed that Vick, while certainly an excellent QB, but only a freshman and really still has a lot to prove and, as you say, has a much better team to work with, garners an invitation while Thomas Jones is left out all together. Thomas Jones being the type of person he is, I'm sure he is taking this in stride, but I see it as a slap in the face. Of course, we all know that the Heisman, while assuring a first round NFL draft pick, does not necessarily mean success in the league. Ricky Williams really hasn't done spit this year (although plagued by various injuries, most recently the dreaded "turf toe"); yet look at what Edgerrin James has done for the Colts.

Is Rudy A Tyrant?

by nemesis

Homeless people in NYC are being checked for outstanding warrants against them and if there is none, they are then asked by the police if they would like to go to a shelter or a soup kitchen to get a meal. If they say no, they are asked to move along. If they fail to obey, they are then arrested for loitering. It seems to me that Rudy is not only helping to protect honest working people from SOME of the criminal homeless, but he's also showing a humanitarian side by keeping them from freezing to death in the cold NYC alleys and streets. Compare this to the following:

Video Shows Hillary Shunning Homeless Man

After campaign bloopers like her husband's pardon of FALN
terrorists and her disasterous Mideast trip in November, First
Lady Hillary Clinton has seized on the issue of homelessness to
jumpstart her flagging bid to represent New York in the US
Senate.

"We shouldn't be criminalizing the homeless with mass arrests
for those whose only offense is that they have no home," Mrs.
Clinton said last week, in a direct slap at the homeless policy
of her expected opponent, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

But after a videotape shot during the Clintons' 1992
presidential campaign is aired tonight by Fox News Channel, the
issue of homelessness may turn out to be yet another exploding
cigar for Mrs. Clinton.

At the opening of his WABC radio show, Sean Hannity debuted the
audio portion of the clip for his New York audience. Hannity
intends to broadcast the video coast to coast tonight on his own
TV show, Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

The tape features Mrs. Clinton greeting a disoriented-sounding
homeless man on the street:

HILLARY: How ya' doin'?

HOMELESS MAN: How you doin', Ma'am?

HILLARY: I'm doin' good. My name is Hillary Clinton. You going
to vote in the primary?

HOMELESS MAN: AAAAHHHHHHH, You damn right. I'm for him all the
way.

HILLARY: Well, we need your help.

HOMELESS MAN: I'm a street person and let me...

HILLARY: Well, good. Is that your stuff?

HOMELESS MAN: (Unintelligible) to buy (unintelligible)...

HILLARY: No, I can't. I got to go. But thank you for saying
hello to me today.

Next, the tape is said to show Clinton aides hustling the man
away from Hillary. He then asks one unnamed Clinton staffer for
a dollar. Instead, the female aide gives the homeless man a
voter registration card and urges him to vote, "So that people
who are in economic harm can elect a president who'll get this
country back on track."

The full video debuts tonight on "Hannity & Colmes," Fox News
Channel - 9PM to 10PM, ET.

More: Rosie Blasts Rudy!

by nemesis

NEW YORK –– Rosie O'Donnell used her talk show Tuesday to berate
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his policies on the homeless, calling him "out
of control" and urging viewers to call him and complain.

O'Donnell said she was willing to get arrested to protest Giuliani's policies.
In October, the talk show host emceed a campaign fund-raiser for first
lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Giuliani's likely opponent in a race for the
Senate next year.

"He thinks he, like, runs the world," O'Donnell said. "Newsflash, Rudy –
it's not good to arrest the homeless people."

The Republican mayor, in a later public appearance, dismissed the
remarks as a partisan attack.

Under the mayor's plan, adults who refuse to work would be evicted from
city shelters for at least 30 days, and their children could be put into foster
care. A simultaneous police crackdown on the homeless followed a street
attack on a woman by a brick-wielding man.

O'Donnell's criticism came at the beginning of her show, after she told
viewers that Woody Harrelson would be a guest.

"I hope he doesn't take a nap while he's out there because Mayor Giuliani
would have him arrested," she said.

Without mentioning that the policy would apply to people who refused to
work, O'Donnell told viewers that Giuliani wanted to take children away
from homeless people.

"Is that the most startling thing you've ever heard? In America, in 1999?"
she said. "It's unbelievable. ... He's out of control, this guy." She did credit
Giuliani, however, for cleaning up New York and making it better.

Her show flashed Giuliani's office phone and fax numbers on the screen
and urged viewers to contact him if they disagreed with the policies.

Giuliani, at a news conference, said the remarks were a carryover of her
campaign appearance for Mrs. Clinton.

"I remember her remarks at the fund raiser and she's obviously a very,
very strong partisan and I think she's probably carrying over her politics in
her show," the Republican mayor said.

During the Clinton fundraiser in October, O'Donnell mocked Giuliani's
slim build, saying he looked like "a human Pez dispenser." The Giuliani
campaign privately complained about the personal nature of the remark.

Talk television's "Queen of Nice" has gone on the political attack before,
arguing with Tom Selleck over gun policy and the National Rifle
Association.

The producer and distributor of her show said they have no problem with
O'Donnell speaking her mind on political issues.

Believable Explanation For Child's Death?

by nemesis

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) -- A man charged with murder for allegedly putting
his 2-year-old goddaughter in a tub of scalding water admitted to police that he
hit her with a belt after she wet herself.

But Terrence Maurice Doyal, 30, said he did not put Tiffany Greenhow in the tub
on Nov. 19.

Tiffany had third-degree burns on her buttocks, thighs, calves and feet and died
Friday of an infection resulting from the burns. Police said the girl also had
bruises on her lower back and kidney area, possibly from being hit with a belt.

Within hours after her death, James City County prosecutors added
second-degree murder to the child abuse and aggravated malicious wounding
charges already lodged against Doyal.

At a bond hearing Monday, a police investigator testified that Doyal admitted
hitting Tiffany with a belt two or three times after she wet herself and caused a
puddle on the floor.

Doyal said Tiffany took a nap afterward but threw up at some point, said Jeremy
Barnett, the primary investigator in the case.

Barnett said Doyal told him that he turned on the water in the bathtub to wash
the vomit off a comforter and left Tiffany sitting on the toilet while he went to
answer the phone.

When Doyal returned, he told police, he found Tiffany sitting in the tub, shaking
but not saying anything. He saw steam coming from the water and noticed that
she was badly burned.

Doyal was the only adult at his apartment at the time, prosecutors said. He was
watching Tiffany and his 10-month-old son.

Instead of calling 911, prosecutors said, Doyal called his wife. She came home
from work and together they took the girl to a hospital. Tiffany marked her
second birthday in the hospital last week.

Doyal's lawyer, George Brooks, did not return a telephone call seeking
comment Tuesday.

"It wasn't an accident,'' Tiffany's father, Maurice Greenhow, said after Doyal was
arrested. He said he never would have allowed Doyal to take care of Tiffany if
he'd had any hint that Doyal might harm her. The girl's mother, Rachel
Greenhow, declined to comment.

Doyal was released on $50,000 bond after the initial charges. He was
re-arrested Friday and remained in jail without bond Tuesday.

Student Arrested For Bringing 9mm Gun To School

by nemesis

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- A 15-year-old student who had been suspended
was arrested Tuesday for bringing a 9mm handgun to school.

A teacher spotted the boy at Cox High School and alerted a police officer
assigned to the school, school district spokeswoman Kathy Phipps said.

The officer arrested the student, searched him and found a 9mm handgun and
an ammunition clip, police spokesman Don Rimer said. Police and school
officials declined to identify the boy.

The student was charged with trespassing on school property, possession of a
handgun on school property, possession of marijuana, possession of a
controlled substance while possessing a firearm and carrying a concealed
weapon, Rimer said.

Ms. Phipps declined to say why the boy had been suspended. She said the boy
told the officer that he had no intention of using the firearm but was just keeping
it for protection.

Eva Braun?

by Topper

YES! Very good, Wonderer!

Braun, Eva (1912-45)

Hitler's mistress from 1932 and his wife during the last few hours of his life, Eva Braun was born in Munich, the daughter of a school teacher. Of middle-class Catholic background, she first met Hitler in the studio of his photographer friend, Heinrich Hoffmann (q.v.), in 1929, describing him to her sister, Ilse, as 'a gentleman of a certain age with a funny moustache and carrying a big felt hat'.
At that time Eva Braun still worked for Hoffmann as an office assistant, later becoming a photo laboratory worker, helping to process pictures of Hitler. The blonde, fresh-faced , slim, photographer's assistant was an athletic girl, fond of skiing, mountain climbing and gymnastics as well as dancing.

After the death of Geli Raubal, Hitler's niece, she became his mistress, living in his Munich flat, in spite of the opposition of her father who disliked the association on political and personal grounds. In 1935, after an abortive suicide attempt, Hitler bought her a villa in a Munich suburb, near to his own home, providing her with a Mercedes and a chauffeur for personal use. In his first will of 2 May 1938 he put her at the top of his personal bequests - in the event of his death she was to receive the equivalent of £600 a year for the rest of her life.

In 1936 she moved to Hitler's Berghof at Berchtesgaden where she acted as his hostess. Reserved, indifferent to politics and keeping her distance from most of the Fuhrer's intimates, Eva Braun led a completely isolated life in the Fuhrer's Alpine retreat and later in Berlin. They rarely appeared in public together and few Germans even knew of her existence. Even the Fuhrer's closest associates were not certain of the exact nature of their relationship, since Hitler preferred to avoid suggestions of intimacy and was never wholly relaxed in her company.

Eva Braun spent most of her time exercising, brooding, reading cheap novelettes, watching romantic films or concerning herself with her own appearance. Her loyalty to Hitler never flagged. After he survived the July 1944 plot she wrote Hitler an emotional letter, ending: 'From our first meeting I swore to follow you anywhere - even unto death - I live only for your love.'

In April 1945 she joined Hitler in the Fuhrerbunker, as the Russians closed in on Berlin . She declined to leave in spite of his orders, claiming to others that she was the only person still loyal to him to the bitter end. 'Better that ten thousand others die than he be lost to Germany', she would constantly repeat to friends.

On 29 April 1945 Hitler and Eva Braun were finally married. The next day she committed suicide by swallowing poison, two minutes before Hitler took his own life. On Hitler's orders, both bodies were cremated with petrol in the Reich Chancellery garden above the bunker. Her charred corpse was later discovered by the Russians.

The rest of Eva Braun's family survived the war. Her mother, Franziska, who lived in an old farmhouse in Ruhpolding, Bavaria, died at the age of ninety-six, in January 1976.

This is disturbing..............

by herbwoman

When Dickenson County is left wanting decent roads and resulting new employers, yet cannot get funding for roads, it is because of 'tight funds'.

Yet when a tourist industry county like Patrick can get funds for a new 'Super 58', which they do NOT need, and most of the people DON'T want, it is because of 'high availability' of funds.

What is going on? Because Patrick and other high tourist counties bring in a greater state revenue because of tourism, they get 'favored county' status with VDOT.

Someone needs to kick someone else in the @ss and make them get out there and do some work for Dickenson County!

In other words, if you don't NEED the money, you can get it. If you are unfortunate enough to NEED money, then forget it!!!!!

Changes need to be made, perhaps?

Grass roots idea........Everyone who is computer literate and can access the free web pages, make a free web page for tourism in Dickenson County. If anyone has a digital camera, take some pictures of the Breaks, the Dam, and other areas, and share them with the others to place on their pages.

Then list as many Dickenson County Tourism pages with free listing servers as you can. Plus, there are many listings out there for different groups, such as hiking, rock climbing, birding, wildlife, botany, biology (feature the endangered species that live in Dickenson County), bicycling groups, that would be interested in new areas to explore. You could link to these pages in return for a reciprocal link.

If the damn government won't help us, then, by all that's holy, let's help ourselves!!!!!!!!!!

Ask them if they have the book on 'Endangered Species of Virginia'. If they don't, try and talk them into buying it. It lists several endangered species that can ONLY BE FOUND IN DICKENSON COUNTY, and nowhere else in the world! There is an endangered salamander called a 'Hell bender', some freshwater clams, one or two shrubs, and some snails that are in this classification. Maybe this will help stop those damn chip mills, if enough outcry is made. I'll try to get the specific name and publisher of the book, and put the information on the DCDB.

About the Cuban child

by Mr.Eon

While I feel sorry for his mother and stepfather who died in trying to achieve freedom, I also feel sorry for the father. From what I've heard, he had custody of the child five days per week and his ex-wife decided to risk not only her own life but the life of her then five-year-old son as well. If the father truly wants his son back, I don't see how we can say no. How would you feel if you were faced with the same situation?

Fidel Castro attended a birthday party in Cuba yesterday for 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez -- as U.S. officials said they're not about to hand over the boy at the center of the raging international custody battle.

Castro was a surprise guest at the party, held for the absent boy by classmates at his school in his hometown of Cardenas -- and the Communist leader repeated his call for Elian's return.

The boy was rescued from an inner tube off the coast of Florida last month, after his mother and 11 others died when their refugee-laden boat sank.

Now his Miami relatives say they want to keep him -- but his father and grandparents in Cuba want him to come home.

Castro has demanded that Washington return the boy by Wednesday or face massive demonstrations in Cuba -- and in a second straight day of protests yesterday about 1,000 mothers and grandmothers marched through Cardenas.

"I've seen Elian's father hitting his head against the wall because he thinks there is nothing he can do," said marcher Adyelin Valdes, 30.

Meanwhile, officials in Washington blasted Castro's bluster.

"We do not accept the ultimatum issued by Fidel Castro," said State Department spokesman James Foley. "This is not conducive to resolving this case in the appropriate humanitarian way."

Foley warned Cuba it must protect the 50 Americans working at the U.S. mission in Havana.

"We hold the Cuban government responsible for any harm to U.S. citizens," he said.

The dispute threatens to disrupt bilateral immigration talks set for Dec. 13.

Cuban officials have suggested the talks could be scuttled -- but they've also said they'll raise the boy's case at the meeting.

In Miami, Elian celebrated his birthday with a small party just for family -- the day after a larger bash with neighborhood kids and the press.

McCain may have the right idea...

by Topper

I have to agree that the child belongs with his father, given the father is a half-way decent father, but I also was a little in agreement with McCain last night when he said that Castro should send the boy's father after him. I think Castro might be afraid the boy's father won't return. If I had custody of a child as a government official or even as a civilian, I would be reluctant to turn him over to anyone except the father.

A quick question for you Topper

by

I agree also with McCain on this, and I think this situation and others dealing with foreign policy will give him a chance to make a little headway against Bush. Ultimately though, party nominations aren't won on foreign policy except in times of crisis.

What do you think about the Republican race for the presidential race? Bush junior is totally lacking in substance so far, as I think even you would admit. Do you think it is wise for the Republican party to nominate George Bush jr?

I know he's ahead in the polls, but when it comes right down to it, when he has to talk about issues, will he be a match for Al Gore or Bill Bradley, both of whom are veteran politicians?

Who do you think would be the best nominee for the Republicans? Just trying to get your thoughts on this. Thanks.

Golfers- Want to win a new putter?

by Mr.Eon

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian doctors have condemned a
golf tournament sponsor offering a penis enlargement for the
longest drive.

Health authorities have also hit out at the organizers after they
offered a breast enhancement to the champion woman player.

Already more than 120 people have entered the tournament at
Queensland's Sanctuary Cove which is being organized by
cosmetic surgery firm Clinical Beauty.

Professor Donald Marshall from the Royal College of
Australian Surgeons told Australian radio on Tuesday that the
competition trivialized cosmetic surgery.

He said consumers needed to remember that even cosmetic
surgery had real risks and the potential for complications.

Queensland government ministers have already instructed the
State's Office of Gaming Regulation to add cosmetic surgery
procedures to the list of banned prizes for lotteries, raffles and
trade promotions.

A spokeswoman for the cosmetic surgery company denied
suggestions the tournament was trivializing medical procedures.

Only Two 'Little Rascals' Remain After Death Of 'Bouncy'

by nemesis

With the death of Harold Wertz (Bouncy), only two remaining 'Little Rascals' survive; Robert Blake (Mickey) and Jesse Jackson (Buckwheat).

Harold Wertz, chubby kid of ``Our Gang'' series, dies

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Harold Eugene Wertz, Jr., who played a chubby little boy named
``Bouncy'' in the 1930s ``Our Gang'' short film comedies and was later replaced by George
``Spanky'' McFarland, has died, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday. He was 72.

Wertz died of complications from a stroke in San Diego on Nov. 21, according to the report.

Wertz appeared in only three of the 221 films that ran from 1922 to 1944, which began as ``Our
Gang'' comedies and were broadcast on television to later generations as ``The Little Rascals.''

For two years he occupied the standard ``fat kid'' character held by several other actors who
were rotated out frequently as they outgrew their roles. Wertz's successor became the film series'
most famous chubby character, George ``Spanky'' McFarland, who joined the cast as a toddler
and later grew into the fat kid role. McFarland died in 1993.

Born in Denison, Texas and brought up in Long Beach, California, Wertz was cast on the series
in 1931 after his mother heard Roach was seeking a new chubby kid actor and sent her son's
picture in.

He did not continue in show business, however. After high school he joined the merchant marine
and served in World War II. Afterward, he founded and operated a pipe company in Long
Beach, California, which remains a family business.

He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen McCracken, one daughter, one son, one brother,
and two grandchildren.

All were white, thin, single, wearing slacks at the time of disappearance, had hair that was long and parted in the middle and they all disappeared in the evening. He prowled for them in college campuses, sororities or state parks. He strangled them or broke their skulls with a crowbar, raped and sodomized them, sometimes with objects. A handsome and athletic men, he was very attractive and convincing for his victims. He was a honors student of psychology at the Washington University and was in love with nice women twice before becoming a psychopath. After being arrested and sentenced to prison due to the accusations of one of his victims who was able to escape his attack, he ran from prison twice and continued his killing spree, before being caught, sentenced to death and executed in the electric chair, in 1984. His total tally was probably more than 36.

Snake In Your Car? Call Bristol's 'Critter Gitter'!

by nemesis

BRISTOL, Va. (AP) -- Imagine driving down the street and feeling a poisonous
snake slither across your foot. Or how about coming home to find seven
opossums in the living room.

Sounds pretty intimidating, huh?

Not to Ronnie Crowder, a Bristol man who calls himself the "Kritter Gitter.'' He
actually enjoys tackling such situations.

The former factory worker and self-proclaimed "hunting freak'' started Nuisance
Wildlife Control service last May to trap wild animals and move them to safer
environments.

One of his most memorable days occurred a few months ago when a man was
driving down a Bristol street and a copperhead snake slithered across his foot.
The man slammed on the brakes, jumped out of the car and left it sitting in the
middle of the road, halting traffic in both directions.

Crowder, whose number is posted at local police departments, arrived to find
chaos and a crowd of curious onlookers.

"I'm not afraid of them if I can catch them, but it was so small that it could go
anywhere it wanted to,'' Crowder said of the snake. "It would go up the back
seat and then it went up in the dash. It finally came out long enough for me to
grab it with my hand.''

The ordeal lasted about 45 minutes.

Crowder has been bitten just three times out of the hundreds of times he has
caught animals. He has yet to become a victim of one of some 60 skunks he
has trapped, thanks to some careful handling.

"I use a box trap, I cover it, and I know this sounds stupid, but you had better
talk to it,'' Crowder said of the animal. "You talk to them, for some reason it
comforts them a little bit, then cover the trap and handle them like they're made
out of glass.''

Crowder doesn't handle deer, bears or average family pets. But he will tangle
with just about any other critter, including raccoons, chickens, potbellied pigs,
ducks, flying squirrels, bats, goats and even an emu -- a large, ostrich-like bird.

"That was an experience,'' Crowder said of his hour-long wrestling match with
the emu.

"I'm not very big and I was looking eye-to-eye with this bird. And when I got
there, I had to catch this thing because I had an audience watching. They
enjoyed it more than I did. I even heard one guy say something about funniest
videos, but I didn't think it was funny.''

Although there's plenty of business around the mostly rural, mountainous area
near Bristol, Crowder isn't sure he can make a career of wildlife relocation. In the
meantime, he's having as much fun as the squirrel he once caught crawling
through a stack of books at a public library.

Crowder said if he doesn't catch the animals and release them, most people
would hurt or kill them to get them out of their way.

"So I feel like when I trap them and take them to the mountains that at least
they've got a chance,'' Crowder said. "A lot of times I go back to see them ...
and they're doing fine. That makes me feel good knowing they're making it.''

Pittston Quitting Coal Business

by nemesis

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Pittston Co. announced Monday that it will sell its coal
business in an attempt to strengthen its security businesses: Brink's Inc.,
Brink's Home Security and BAX Global.

"The performance of the coal business and its related liabilities have cast a
shadow on these healthy and growing businesses,'' said Michael Dan,
chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Richmond-based
company.

Under its Pittston Minerals Group, the company operates 30 coal mines in
Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

Dan said the group has $600 million in liabilities, the lion's share being in
medical benefits for retirees. That compares to $11.3 million in market
capitalization.

The company also said it will also eliminate its tracking stock structure, in
which the company's various operations are sold as different stocks.

The structure has become increasingly popular -- Microsoft, AT&T, J.C. Penney
Co. have reportedly considering it, and MCI already has created a tracking stock
for its PCS wireless business.

The company will exchange BAX Global and Minerals Group stock for its Brink's
Group stock, which will become Pittston's only outstanding common stock by
Jan. 14.

Given the liabilities of the Minerals Group, the tracking stock structure didn't
accurately reflect the company's worth, Dan said.
