Uninvited

My family had fallen on hard times and my parents decided to move into my grandparent's house for three months, in order to get back on their financial feet. My sister, parents and I, moved into an old farm house in the back of the main house on my grandparent's ranch, which had once been my father's and uncle's bedroom when they were growing up. Our three month stayed streched to 3 1/2 years. I never knew my uncle, he was kidnapped and murdered, while covering a shift for my father, at a local gas station when he was 19.

It was the day after my 12th birthday. I woke up unexpectantly, in the dead of night to the sound of my own screaming. As I lay in bed, trying to catch my breath, I reflected back on the dream I have just experienced.

I was standing on a lonely, yet familiar highway. I noticed my sister running across a wheat field towards me. As she approached the road and attempted to cross it, a large truck hit her, crushing her stomach. She cried out to me "Why!".

I was in a cold sweat and breathing fast, as I attempted to rise from my bed and head for the bathroom. On the way, I passed a mirror and to my sleepy, unfocused horror, I mistook my own, panick-stricken, unearthly white reflection to be that of a ghost. I immediately screamed out in terror. Through the haze of my nightmare, I remember questioning my old ability to think clearly, yet I continued down the hall. Upon reaching the bathroom, I found myself attempting to enter the room by running into the reflection of a mirror, hanging on the outside wall, several times before realizing were I was, instead of turning the handle of the door. In my disoriented state, I reached for the door knob and it burned my hand. Thinking the burn was merely a strong dose of static electricity, I reached out for the door again, but I was stopped by a clear voice or at least a clear thought, "This is not for you!" I was so terrified that I ran back to my room and strangely enough, slept through the rest of the night.

The next morning I remembered everything, but explained it away as a night terror. During the bus ride to school my sister told my that she was still thinking about a terrible dream she had just experienced last night. She was walking home from school and a van hit her, as she was crossing the street. After the van left, she got up and went into our house and headed for the bathroom. As she approached the open door, she noticed a tall, black-as-night figure standing by the sink. His eyes appeared as ovals, cut from the blackness, which revealed light shining through a window that was directing behind him.
He appeared to beckon her to approach him, but did not say a word. She ran. Upon awakening, she noticed the figure standing at the foot of her bed. Never speaking, he moved to the door and simply walked out.

Six months later, my sister witnessed our dog die when he was hit on the country road in front of our house. Rebecca attempted to call out to the well-trained dog to stop, but he continued to run, right into the street, in front of a truck.

Six months later, I witnessed my 12-year-old sister, still excited about her recent birthday, get hit on that same road by a van. The person in the van kept driving. My sister is still alive today, 15 years later, but she is living with a brain injury and multiple complications from the accident.
