As most people on the DCDB know, I tell the truth. I had another experience in April of this year that really knocked my socks off.
My husband has a large family up here where we live, and Uncle Alvie and Aunt Katherine lived on the same road we live on. Uncle Alvie was in his eighties, and in ill health. He used to be a farmer, and shared a farm in the early 30's and 40's with Pa, my husband's grandfather.
My aunt Edith (On Dad's side of the family) and my Uncle Alvie (On my husband's side of the family) both passed away on the same day in April, and were buried on the same day, in different counties in Virginia. I went to Edith's funeral, and my husband went to Alvie's funeral.
Nearly four weeks after the funerals, I was driving down our road, thinking of nothing at all. As I went through a right hand curve, I saw Uncle Alvie standing on the left hand side of the road with a team of mules. He had on bid overalls, a cap, and was holding the halter of the off mule in his hand. I remember thinking, "Oh, there's Uncle Alvie!" , and raised my hand and waved at him. He waved back, and I drove on down the road.
I only drove a few more feet down the road before it hit me - Uncle Alvie was dead! I instinctivly slammed on the breaks, slid to a halt, and turned to look back.
He wasn't there.
I asked Pa, who is his brother (and my husband's grandfather) if he and Uncle Alvie had ever used mules on their joint farm. He told me that he and Alvie had once bought a mule team. While Alvie loved using the mules, Pa didn't like them, so they sold the mules and bought a tractor.
Since I didn't get to go to his funeral to say good-by, do you think that maybe Uncle Alvie came back to say good-by to me?
I don't know.
As God is my witness, this is the truth. It really happened. I have been seeing things like this all my life. Some call it a gift, but I am not so sure. My grandmother called it the "Second Sight", and said that it was 'in the blood'.
