this is worth a look when it's working. You can actually make it pan and zoom in so you can watch people drinking on the decking.

Old Bros/WCC Isle of Wight Trip...

by Woolven

In the end Stu, Paul, Greg and I went. Glyn had to work on the Saturday so he did not come. We sailed from Southampton to East Cowes with Red Funnel line. We stayed in a well equiped Pine Lodge/Chalet complete with dishwasher on a Holiday Park in Shanklin.

This year we did not take any surfboards or kayaks as the water is very cold in November. But the sandy beaches and sea looked very impressive.

We had very good weather with no rain. So we played the tourist. On the Saturday we went on the train to Sandown and Ryde and the piers. The train was old 'underground' rolling stock which was good to see but it was very noisy.

On the Sunday Greg drove us to the Needles and Yarmouth.
We sampled the Goddard's bitter and enjoyed the local food and hospitality.

On the monday we explored Cowes and sailed home on the ferry.

PS We spotted a farmer's field full with about 50 'treasure hunters' with their metal detectors. It must have been a local club.

Would you believe it...

by Fell Walker

My left big red toe nail has just dropped off so I now have two healthy big toe nails again for Lake 2008! I will have to try Nev's advice of wearing two pairs of socks and doing the laces up really tightly. Also not too short toe nails. My boots are 'Solamon' and they recomended you only wear one pair of socks. Also we can go on short walks!

PS My Doctor said it was due to walking on all the cobbled rocks of the 'High Street.' So too much rock and not enough grass.

Did I really say that?

by Nev

More probably I actually said:

(1) Try experimenting with two pairs of socks to see if that made it better or worse.

(2) Many laces are made of synthetic material which tends to stretch after one has been walking for a while. It is therefore a good idea to tighten up the laces a bit after walking for about half an hour.

I think I also said that it was not a good idea to have cut your nails the day before walking - about three days beforehand allows the tender skin that was previous under the nail to harden up.

Too much rock

by Tim

Sort of comment you'd expect to have heard Bob Marley saying to... - well I'm not sure who? Not many rockers have ever been noted for thier abstemious nature when it comes to mind-enhancing chemicals. I think perhaps Elvis was a candidate - he went in for prescription drugs on the whole I believe.

Andrew Clarke continued...

by Mike

Andrew was born in Scotland. He moved down to Liverpool to find work and married Elizabeth Alison on 2nd October 1817. He then continued his career at sea. Andrew did become a Captain and presumably it would have been on sailing vessels sailing from the port of Liverpool. Leonard never found his Death Certificate but his grand parents always stated he was lost at sea.

Family tree/new Dell...

by Woolven

My new computer is a Dell Inspiron 530 Celeron 420, 1.60Ghz, 800mhz, FSB, 512KB cach with English Windows Vista Home Premium. It is a desk top with 19" flat screen monitor. I already had a Cannon printer and speakers from my old computer which was a Pentium 2 with an upgrade to a Pentium 3. So I am very pleased with it. (TREV, TIM AND ANT)

Family Tree continued:

The Clarke family tree is 12 pages long so not worth scanning on Trev but I can show you at Xmas if your home or Richard could show you his copy. Coming from Rochdale alot of the Clarkes worked in the textile industry and some moved to Liverpool for work:

Henry Archibald Clarke Flannel Manufacturer
Athur Clarke Mechanic
Mary Clarke Cotton Weaver
Harriet Clarke Clothes Dealer
Margaret Clarke Dressmakers's Apprentice
Andrew Clarke Master Mariner (lost at sea)
John Clarke Seaman/Deckhand
Sam Silverwood Cotten Mill Clerk

Some other female Clarkes did Household duties and some became Scholars. Our late Grandma, Alice Clarke was one and became an English Teacher in Rochdale like Peggy.

PS Typo: The late Leonard Clarke and his wife Margaret did this family tree not Sydney Clarke!

Peggy Clarke continued...

by Woolven

Peggy was Dad's cousin. Dad's middle name is also Clarke (DCS) and Clarke was his mother's maiden name. The Silverwood bros' late Grandma. At the moment it is very middle class to do your family trees and luckily Sidney Clarke has done the Silverwoods and Clarkes and can be trace back to 1818

Also Aunty Joan Raven has done the Muddles and Woolvens and can be tracked back to the 1700's Our great, great, great Grandpa owned 'Jack' Windmill at Clayton on the South Downs by the Jack and Jill Pub. Judy and I obviously went there quite a few times. The silverwood bros are definately from a family of Millers! Woolven Farm and Muddle are on the local O/S map so we are from the aristocrasy! The Mill still trades under Charlse Muddle and Sons Ltd and our cousin Stuart now runs the businesses.

PS NOW DEFINATELY WAITING FOR 4 MESSAGES ANY BROS COMMUNICATING IMPRESSED WITH NEW DELL!

Cheers Mike

Any chance of you posting the whole family tree up here for us to have a gandar? The Holdens have been trying to do the same but hit an impasse in the 1800´s with some dodgy relatives.

What's your Dell processer and chipset Bro? Are you AMD or Intel? Come on you dual core boys!

Family trees

by Tim

I would advise against comparing family trees with Michael. Assuming that each century takes us back 4 generations. 700 years ago, or 28 generations ago, means you have 268435456 great great great (etc) grandparents. Since this is greater than the population of europe at that time it is certain that at some point you and michael have common relatives and hence are cousins. This most likely occured much sooner than the 700 years. The question you have to ask yourself is "Do I feel confident that my genetic makeup is not shared with Michael Silverwood" - put another way "Do I feel lucky!"

Mind you all his brothers are fine fellows so its not all bad news.

in breeding

by blood brother

iyeh i've read about this... I believe that nearly everyone in the UK are 13th cousins unless you are in the royal family or are from Arundel. That's why it is good to marry foreigners. You get less inbred and healthier blood. Just in case you think I'm getting a bit Ayrian or Eugenic, Trev`s daughter hsa been the luckiest by getting a fix of North African blood. So far pretty healthy.

Glyn and I are definately up for it. This year because of my left shoulder injury. I had to start season with swimming only in the sea. I was only allowed 6 weeks of pysiotheraphy with the good old NHS. They gave me lots of exercise routines plus my old canoeing exercising Richard and I did for races on Arun and Adur years ago. Anyway waited for end of season and rolled a few times and topped up the tan. Glyn and I had a great water fight and he capsized me but I managed to roll up! I had got all his long hair wet!! But now my ligament still aches a bit. I guess we are all getting old. We usuallly paddle at Goring because of the cafes, greens and toilets. Also Glyn was born in Goring so he also likes paddling at Goring Gap. Plus near The Mulberry, The Bull and The Tudor,in Ferring (ANT) for a few 'jars' to hydrate.

PS left shoulder has ached a bit after walking in Lakes with day pack for the last two years.

PPS shortlisted for a good job in Shoreham Harbour

No summer holiday tales, next auntum holiday...

by Woolven

We have booked an 8 berth caravan at a holiday camp in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight for weekend 2nd to 5th November 2007. Obviously this is the WCC/old bros 'surfing/kayaking' trip. We tried to get given Weymouth but were offered the Isle of Wight. So it should be a good weekend break.

Tim cannot make it this year so anyone interested phone me: 01903/523804
At the moment it looks like:

Me
Glyn
Paul
Greg
Stu

so bros any amusing summer holiday tales!

Favourites

by Phil

I have told Mike just because he'll have broadband this doesn't allow him more posting.
(Perhaps I’ll forget to transfer the Old Bros Site to his Favourites)

Good day out at the Goodwood Revival, went with Jem, Dunc, Paul D, and meet up with CJ and Matt. Another Old Bros tradition the place to meet is around Lavant Corner.

Cheers
Phil
