Does anyones bully experience allergies at this time of year only and....

by

does anyones bully get hives that which in turn cause vomiting? Can Benadryl cause vomiting? Auggie's allergies have been under control for almost a year. Now he suddenly got hives and has started throwing up again. Had to give him a prendisone which I hate, but its the only thing that helps. Does anyone know if there is non steroidal pill that will work like the prendisone. He has metoproclomide(spelt wrong)sometimes that helps, but I gave it last night and he still puked. that is why I resorted to the prendisone this am.

Are his feet itchy?

by Chester's mom

If so... brew some green tea...put a few tea bags in a bowl and brew a strong batch...or even better... put a lot of tea bags in the laundry tub and brew a good 1 inch deep bath...real strong...let it cool to luke warm and put your boy in the laundry tub and let him stand in the green tea for a couple of minutes....before or after you can apply the tea bags directly to the sore itchy pads and let it soothe the skin...I know it sounds crazy but it really works...after the skin has dried... put a mixture of a vitamin E pill squeezed out that is mixed into some Almond oil...put this on the skin... it also helps.

I hope this helps!

It's funny because...

by

That's the ONLY thing that's changed. I still have no idea what I'm doing. I have found there are 2 things that make a difference with cameras for the average person. One, a nice lens with a good zoom so you can fill the frame with your subject (in this case, Otis). And two, having a camera that has little or no lag between the time you press the button and the time the image is captured. That has been my main source of frustration with older, cheaper cameras, and it has caused me to miss a lot of pictures. There's a lot more to it than that. I'm sure someone who know more about photography could chime in. But those are two biggies for me....

It's the lag time that kills my pictures

by

I have a good shot in view and the camera takes a couple seconds to think and I get backs of heads and butts instead. It drives me crazy. My camera is good for non-moving objects, but it's horrible for action shots or anything that moves.

to me...

by

... That's the BIGGEST thing you get when you spend bigger bucks on a camera. That is an even bigger killer to me than zoom, or resolution, or clarity.... just the ability to get closer to what you think you are going to get when you fire the shot. That's the biggest thing.

This camera actually does really well in low light with no flash as well. The "image stabilization" thing is AWESOME. Take a look at this goofy pic I took of some candles in my house. Low light... Just a lamp.. no flash.. hand held.. no tripd. This camera really impresses me.

There's no redness or bumps or pimple like things where the hair as fallen out and both Marley and Kingston seem to be shedding alot lately.... Is this just due to the weather and something that happends to everyone? Thanks for the info in advanced.

Seasonal Flank Alopecia... =)

by Julia & Grover

Grover gets it every single year. Usually March-Novemeber, but it hasn't been too bad, so I'm happy to say we made it to April!

Check this other post I made a few days ago, to see the pics of Grover... that first one was the worst year. But since being on raw and salmon oil and Missing Link and probiotics, it's gotten a lot beter. It's just aesthetic... but the skin is always cold and elephanty.

A common bulldog ailment, I guess. I think it's been rumored that it's a lot more common in the Northeast? That not many bullies get it in, say, California? Perhaps something to do with the lack of sun over the winter?

need an opion

by Chester's mom

Chester has had a nagging couch for quite a while now (at least 2 months)...we took him to the vet and he was put on antibiotics...2 weeks worth....we also bought a warm humidifier and put that on top of his cage at night and have it at high temp. and quite a high humidity level...this actually has quited the cough quite a bit at night (as well as his snoring)...not to mention my dry skin is looking much better!

We took him to a bulldog specialist vet 2 Saturdays ago and he listened to his breathing and x-rayed his chest...his lungs looked fine...no bronchitis or phenomia and his trachea was a good size (Dr. said it was not narrow as some bullys have) I asked him if there was a medication to give to help the lessen the cough at night as the poor guy was not getting a good sleep (can't get better if you are sleep deprived) he gave me a cough suppressant pill that I give at night.

This vet is on vacation this week....I got another weeks worth of antibiotics (different ones) and I also took him off the cough suppressant pills for Sunday and Monday (but yesterday my mom said he coughed a bit more during the day and he sounded groggy last night so I gave him one last night) He did cough last night about 4 times...it is usually a loud sudden cough (like an old man trying to hack something up)

I also had a fecal sample test for eggs and larvae to see if there was a presence of a lung parasite...the test came back as clear...no parasites...

This is driving me crazy... what do you think it could be? Has anyone else dealt with this? Could it be that his soft pallet is to long and it cuts of his air and this is why he suddenly coughs? Any suggestions would be of great help as we try to figure this out.

Gus throwing up...again....questions (kinda long)

by

Good morning!

Yesterday morning and again this morning Gus threw up....NOTHING like he was doing last week and was absolutely fine after. I picked him up, brought him outside, he pooped and peed and then came in, had a little bit of dry food and proceeded to go back to sleep.

Yesterday I didn't have class so I stayed at my parents' right near our vet just in case I needed it. He was his normal crazy self all day. I stopped by there and talked to the vet and she told me not to be concerned and it might have been just a flukey thing. Like I said, poop is fine and no other acting funny. And we've been watching him like a hawk....so pretty sure nothing was eaten that should not have been.

But again this morning he woke up heaving and threw up....brown and some bile. But not a whole lot.

He ate dinner around 6:30 last night and went outside around 9:30 for the last time. He didn't poop, but he did when we were over at the park in the afternoon and during the day as well.

I'm going to call my vet, but anyone have a "puker"? This is a new thing for him...could it be upset stomach in the morning? allergies?

Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to offer!!

Mine do this sometimes and I give them a TUMS for stomach acid and it seems to stop it..

by Lisa, Odie, and Lady

Check with your vet and see if this is alright. Some on the board even give a Pepsid AC tablets to their bullys. Usually when my throw up, it is yellow and watery looking and it is not very much in content.

Good luck, just check with your vet and see what he or she suggests.

Auggie is a puker. We finally got it under control....

by

We feed him a homemade diet plus we give him a samll meal right before he goes to bed. Every time we try to switch him offf ahomemade diet he pukes. However, I think the cause is allergies. Auggie got hives on Monday and puked. He also puked three times, late last night, at 12:45, and around 5 this morning. I definitely think the allergies which seem to only pop up this time of year are the cause of the vomiting. i hope this helps. Good luck!!!

Just talked to the vet....

by

She thinks it might be acid-reflux-ish related. So she told me to give him a little meal right before bed and see if it happens again. If it does keep happening we'll try him with Pepcid or something.

Though she is suprised to see this possibility in a dog so young, but hey Gus is just like that....my little vet-bill spendin' monger.

He has an appointment next week for his 6month heartworm test and we'll discuss things then...hopefully I won't need it before then.

But will look into homemade meals as well....is there a good website or cookbook anyone knows of?

Thanks for all the input!

Hiya Mack!

by bullmonty

Had to look back 2 pages to read last nite's posts
Hazard's slow slow weight loss is due to mixing beans (and other veges) with his usual meals to make up bulk. (I cut down his kibble by 20% and add 30 to 40% veges). But I've not been really strict about keeping to this which is probably why his weight clda come down quicker hee hee hee! Sorta helps his gas problems - he gets that less often now.
Many thks to Lisa!

All that rain down in Sandyland? And hello, Bullmonte. You may need to start building an ark or two. We pray you drain well. Okay, out the door now. A big road cuppie and it's south for me. Don't worry. Grapes are a problem only in large quanties.

by Stephanie&David

There's a lot of overwrought talk about grapes. Before we heard about his, my mom used to feed her pug grapes every day - maybe up to five or six a day. The dog never got sick from them and lived until he was 16, healthy until the last 24 hours before he died of old age. This was a dog about 1/2 the size of a lot of bulldogs.

Don't worry. Remember that even choclate - which is actually a big problem and can cause sickness and death in dogs, won't hurt in tiny quanties. If you dropped a choclate chip on the floor and your dog snatched it up and swallowed it, it wouldn't hurt.

As her head fills out more they may appear less upright but mostly they seem to remain as you see them now. Unless she has a future career in the show ring/breeding program it shouldn't matter one bit, and they are rather cute in that she looks so alert and enthusiastic about what is happening.

I've always given eggs

by

I think there is an element of risk when feeding raw eggs, due to the salmonella issue. However, dogs have a high degree of digestive acid that eliminates alot of things that would be hazardous to us as humans, but not to them.
I don't think we would fair very well if we took a meaty bone, buried it for two weeks during the summer, and dug it up and ate it.
But, dogs do it all the time.
I have fed raw eggs to all of my dogs for years. We have our own eggs, so we throw in an egg here and there. The dogs love them, especially when they're still warm! Fresh as it gets!

The dogs digestive track is short and fast moving compaired to humans. Meaning things go in and out much faster, so they have less chance of getting bacterial infections for food

they told me what is copied below, since i dont feed raw i could not reply to it, but have always heard some of you all do it, so now it has me curious. yoru thoughts on the below info;;;

Raw egg whites contain a protein called avidin, which can deplete your dog of biotin, one of the B vitamins. Biotin is essential to your dog’s growth and coat health. Additionally, raw eggs are often contaminated with bacteria, such as salmonella, and you could end up giving your dog food poisoning in addition to biotin deficiency, while short tracks reduce the risk, some bad bugs can be reatined and it happens. The biotin deficiency is a main problem in canin health.

Symptoms of biotin depletion are hair loss, weakness, growth retardation and skeleton deformity. If your dog is suffering from these symptoms the situation is urgent, and veterinary treatment is needed. Cooked eggs are high in protein and make an excellent treat. It is only the raw eggs that should not be given to your dog.

I had decided that I was trying to hard to do as Ceaser said, and not giving her enough praise and attention at other times.

She got spayed yesterday, and is doing great except she was nippy again tonight and I had to give her time out twice.

She has also been adamant about coming into my chair even when I tell her no.

Kofi is such a sweet girl most of the time so I'm sure we'll figure it out.

No new scars anyway.

I missed posting earlier...sounds like Kofi is a handful sometimes. I think bulldogs do best with positive reinforcement training...the "Alpha Dog" methods can sometimes be counterproductive. I prefer that my dogs consider me Alpha because they love and respect me, not because I'm bigger and badder than they are. Try reading Don't Shoot the Dog, by Karen Pryor. Be consistent and structured, just like raising a child. Good luck, and if we can help, let us know.

I am so glad that my mentor, Cathy, has posted for you! She's right! These babies just want to please. And you don't have to use the Cesar Milan approach to accomplish what you want. Right now, you've got to "un-do" some of what Kofi has become accustomed to as acceptable behavior in your home. Cooper has learned a couple of hand signals. Don't know if they are right for the show world, but a full hand stetched out in front of me tells him to stop in his tracks. A snap of my fingers tells him to sit. I don't think Kofi wants to be the boss, she's just got her signals crossed right now. Keep us posted! And remember, positive reinforcements! If she's napping, don't just let her nap. Pet her and talk to her softly (but not in your chair or on the couch next to you). I think she'll get the message on the time-outs when she's nipping. The behavior she has learned over the past couple of months cannot be fixed in a day or two. Don't give up!

This may be the only time I will reference Cesar. When he takes over a space, like a sofa, he's not kicked back and chilling out. He's sitting forward letting the dog know this is "mine." When she has learned some manners, then she can sit with you in your favorite chair. Find that one-on-one trainer like Elaine said. You don't need a trainer just telling you that you need to correct her behavior. You need someone to tell you "how" to correct the behavior. And Kofi obviously has a lot of energy. She needs some exercise or play, not to the point of exhaustion, to release that energy.

O/T info for anyone buying a new home

by

I think this has been brought up on the board before but I want to stress this again to anyone in the process of buying a new home. DO NOT get a mortgage with a variable interest rate. I have been swamped this month with clients coming in to file bankruptcy to try and save their homes from foreclosure because when they purchased their home they financed the mortgage with a variable interest rate. Everything is fine for about the 1st two years and then BOOM, the interest rate jumps up about 2 to 3 percent and they are now looking at a mortgage payment that has increased $300 to $500 a month. And that is only the beginning. The interest continues to increase yearly until it is out of their range. And yes, the mortgage company will tell you that it is variable and can increase but there is a cap on how high it can go. What they don't tell you is the cap is usually at about 16 to 18 percent. Your real estate agent is not your friend. They are working for a commission and that is all they are concerned about. Closing the sale anyway possible. No one will ever make a variable interest rate sound as bad as it is. When you are in the process of qualifying for a loan make sure it is a FIXED interest rate. If you are not offered a fixed interest rate then walk away. As much as you want that house, it is not worth the stress it will put on you trying to juggle finances to keep up with the increasing mortgage payments.

They are so slick it disgusts me. They are offering you a loan at a rate they know you can afford. The interest rate is low enough that when you see what your mortgage payment is you are excited and jump at the opportunity. What they don't tell you is with a variable interest rate, your mortgage can triple within 5 years or even less and then you are stuck with that huge mortgage for the next 10 to 25 years depending on the life of your loan. I real shocker for the homeowner.

The sad thing here in the US is the government doesn't care about its citizens

by

Most of the politicians in office right now have been bought and paid for by corporate business. They are the biggest contributors to the campaigns and have the most lobbyists in Washington. All the laws that have been put into action are totally for the benefit of corporate America. Just look at the cost of prescription drugs and the new medicare bill. All the politicians that worked so hard to get that bill passed (and quite unethically) left office and are now working for the pharmaceutical companies as lobbyists and such making salaries of more than $200,000 a year. Another thorn in my side. I'm filing bankruptcies for people who should be enjoying their retirement but they are so far in debt because their prescriptions are running them $800 to $1,100 a month and they can't get any assistance. Ugghhh, don't get me started!!

by Cathie, Harley, & Chopper

...what about personal responsibility? Common sense would tell you not to spend more than you could afford...and that there will not necessarily be more money later. Anyone with a little bit of credit card debt knows that.

I think it's going a little far to say the government doesn't care. Unless what you really want is a socialist government that feeds a sense of entitlement.

Touchy or not...

by Stephanie&David

The political climate in the USA for the last few years has been for the corporation and the wealthy, not for the increasingly financially squeezed middle class. The bankrupcy laws are one example. Most people who go bankrupt are not spendthrifts. Most have had unexpected health problems, which have lead not just to high medical bills (especially for the 45 million of those w/o health insurance), but mounting expenses for those who cannot work because of illness.

So this won't seem partisian, I don't think that the current congress will do much to change the situation, either.

However, there are moves in congress to tighten the mortgage laws. This will mean fewer people can get mortgage loans, and that may eliminate some of the problems by forcing people to wait until they can actually afford to buy their own home. However, the housing market was, and perhaps is, proping up the economy. We'll have to wait and see what happens about that.

Interest only loans are good only for short-term investment properties.

by Stephanie&David

If you want to buy/fix/sell and don't plan to hold the property for more than a year, these are a good deal, since you need money for the fixing. But if you take an interest only, you'll pay only the interest. At the end of the 30 year loan you'll still owe the entire part of the loan.

Ask a lot of questions when you get a mortgage loan. Shop around and don't simply consider closing costs when you are choosing a loan officer.

Also, individuals getting these loans are often Sub-Prime

by Jacklyn

No offense to those with these Mortgages, but a lot of the problem is stemming from the sub-prime market.

Sub-prime are individuals with less than stellar credit. The mortgage companies and brokers have relaxed their lending rules over the years allowing people who never used to be able to get a mortgage get one. This coupled with the low interest rates was really causing a boom in the housing market for this segment of the population. To make things even better the brokers offered and sold these variable interest mortgages (they didn't care who they were giving mortgages too b/c they did hold the mortgage paper on the note--they brokered them to mortgage company and took their commission for selling the mortgage). Well since the terms are coming due on the 3-5yr adjustable mortgages and payments are skyrocketing they can't afford their payments.

Now that so many people are going belly up and in this situation the mortgage companies are stiffining their lending rules again. Once a person w/ a 600 credit score could get a mortgage and now the minimum is around 675, so those with new adjusted payments can now no longer qualify to get a new mortgage either.

Make sense - it's a shame that brokers did this to people, but they were simply in it for the 1 time commission and have no consequences since they aren't the holder of the mortgage paper (there wasn't any risk to them)

The reason why several can’t refinance…

by Brian

The reason why several can’t refinance is due to the fact that there are several people that are upside down on their home loans, meaning that they owe more then the value of their home.
They take out a 90% first mortgage and a 10% 2nd or Bridge loan at a higher interest rate than their first mortgage, allowing them to move into a home with Zero Down.

In a declining real-estate market the home value drops say $10,000 and when they go to refinance the home won’t appraise out for more then they owe, eliminating the opportunity to refinance the loan without putting in cash that they don’t have.
They other scenario is that they have missed payments on credit cards, car payments or mortgage payments reducing their credit score, eliminating their ability to refinance…..

I have one real estate client...(more advice)

by stephanie&David

I have one client who got a second mortgage w/ interest only. Her house was on the market and it was the only way she could buy a home before hers sold. (She was moving from one state to another because of a job transfer.) When her house sold, she paid off the zero down 2nd mortgage and had only the regular mortgage. However, she had saved her money and was able to put a considerable amount into the downpayment for the first loan. This was a proper use of an interest only loan.

What astounds me are the number of people who make very good salaries who have no savings at all to put into a down payment. The more you put down, the lower your interest rate will be, in most cases. Also, pay attention to your credit rating, as this is the most determining factor in setting your interest rate.

There is also something called 'stated income' loans. It used to be difficult for the self-employeed, for commission workers and for seasonal workers (including teachers) to get mortgages. Stated income loans allow for that. But if your mortgage person suggests one, make sure it's the best thing for you.

Victim mentality...And Denise. The lender does disclose the CAP on the loan.

by Brian

Sorry guys but I am going to throw my .02 into this discussion and most won’t like it.

As ADULTS we have to take responsibility for our own actions.
If you go into a bank and ask for a mortgage and the loan officer offers you 3 or 4 different options you should be able to differentiate between a loan that you can and can’t afford.
Every loan comes with a Federal Truth in Lending disclosure and that document discloses the FULL terms of the loan.

IF you don’t understand the terms of the loan then it is the borrower’s responsibility to seek out the answers to any questions that they might have.
I get so tired of hearing about the victims of bad loans.
MOST all of the people in these situations took a risk that they where fully aware of when they signed the papers they just don’t like what happens when things go bad on their end of things.
Here is an example of a Truth in Lending Disclosure.

We have a lot of friends that are ......

getting zero down 35 year morgages right now.. I am not sure that they really know what they are gettign into. there is a 5% charge up front (1 time just added to the overall cost) but they also pay an extra 2-3% yearly (currently a bout 8-9% overall) on the principle for a min of 5 years.. after 5 years of paying it down, they are going to owe more than they borrowed to begin with. Unless their home gains value, they wont be able to negotiate a better situation after 5 years... sounds a lot like paying rent to me.

this is happening in canada, you are now allowed to have upto a 40 year amoritisation (sp?) period.. FORTY YEARS!!! it is ok if you plan to make lump sum payments as you can, but it takes a lot of self dicipline to do that.

Wrong: Some real estate agent DO care!

by Stephanie&David

As a real estate agent, I have to tell you that I am not simply concerned with the commission. I have warned several clients about their getting a variable rate loan, but they didn't listen to me. I check on them every few months to see that they're doing ok, and unfortunatly, a couple of them were not.

I'm having to deal with banks, short sales and possible foreclosures. In a buyer's market, that's no fun at all for me or for my clients. Sell your home in a short sale (where the bank agrees to take less) and you may end up owing money for listing and closing costs, even after the home sells. The difference between the appraised value of the home and what the bank will take is considered income by the IRS, and you'll pay taxes on this, as well.

There are circumstances where a varilable rate is approprate. If you are SURE that you won't be living in the home for very long (moving somewhere for a limited-time job or school, or perhaps a buy/fix/sell investment), the ARMs are great. Otherwise, think carefully about your decision. You CAN probably refinance, but you can't time the mortgage market. Mortgage rates, like the stock market, can go down, but they can also go up, and right now, up is more likely than down.

Listen to Denise

by Angie

This is true and I am the one who wrote in couple of weeks back and gave my experience. The reason we bought a adjustable rate is with all the incurring medical bills, that is the only kind of loan we could afford. We had no credit cards, no expenditures and in fact Jim and I have been accused of being quite frugal. We moved out of our home last sat. It broke our hearts. I even left my appliances and my tulips I planted last year. Dying is not cheap but the banks dont care. Our bankruptcy will be complete in May and our discharge will be in July. We live in a cozy apt and thank God we have our boys but we had to give our 12 yr old Dalmation to a sweet friend and give up our bassest hound to rescue. I try not to remember our little white home with red trim but it hurts too much. Jim wanted to stay there till he passed on and that didnt happen. If this doesnt make you think twice then I dont know what else to say. Also, watch what brokers appraise the property at. Ours made the numbers fit the loan and that is why we couldnt sell it. It's been SOOO long...here's a bio (which is long too)!!

by

Hi!! I have been catching up on all the posts for the past couple of weeks. I blame school and Gus for keeping me away from daily posts!!!

Bio: I am a reformed CPA who is going back to school to become a high school English teacher. I left my job in November 2005, sold my house, moved in with my boyfriend and his dog (Diesel the rotty) and a month later (oh, because the job, the house and the move all happened in a span of 2 days!) went back to school full time!! I will finish up my 2nd undergrad degree in English at the beginning of May. And I will begin my master's degree work (for 2ndary English education) the end of May. I have been without a job since November 2005 and I MISS SHOPPING with all my heart and soul!!!

I was always good at accounting and it was natural for me to follow a career there. But the business world just didn't "do it" for me. I was a public accountant (worked for Andersen as an auditor and a business consultant) and then moved into private accounting. I worked in financial reporting and was working an average of 80 hours a week. I had no life and missed my family, friends and boyfriend dearly. It also kept me away from enjoying my house and from getting a bully much earlier!!!

I decided to finally make the break and go back to do something that made me feel like I was DOING SOMETHING. I am young enough to not have anything holding me back at all (not that I feel anyone is ever too old to do anything they have passion for!) and old enough to know that I can go back to the business world anytime and still do well there...but it was time for a positive change. I love being in school and canNOT wait to begin teaching!!

I have a big family that I would simply cease to be without their support...I love my Gus more than I EVER thought possible...I will be in school until May 2008 and FULLY expect to be hitched and begin a family of my own shortly thereafter (shhh...don't tell the boyfriend about that!! he he he).

PHHHEEWWWW....oh my sister tells me I have dia. of the mouth!!!

Gus is doing better....he threw up again this morning and I watched him all day and talked to the vet and she really thinks it could have been a flukey thing this morning. He was himself the rest of the day.

So I'm nervous for tonight...mornings are usually his worst times...and tomorrow I have school. So I can't be home to watch him all day....

But so far he seems to have gotten all the pillow fluff out of his diet and the a/b killed the bacteria in his system.

How is Rocco?

And thanks for the kind words...I appreciate them!

And here's the name story....

by Christina & Gus

I have wanted a bulldog for about eight years....and I always wanted to name him (b/c I always wanted a boy) Sweetpea. Why? Because I just LOVE how they sound like piggies and knew he would be my Sweetpea. And I was willing to deal with the rash of sh*t I was already getting for the name.

So when I met my puppy I looked at him and he didn't look like a Sweatpea And all of a sudden the name Gus popped into my head. I don't know where it came from or why. It just did....and it just fit the way he looked...

So he is Baby Gus...Lil G...Gussy....Fussy Gussy...Fus...Fussy...Baby Boy...Pork Chop...Tank (his Grandpa)...Grandma's Boy...Brutus (his Grandma)...

This is the day my heart melted for him...

And the day I brought him home...

And today...just under 6 months

As much heck as he puts me through with the vet and his health...I simply can't imagine my life without him!!!

You are too much!

by

All I can say is WOW. You are so cool! 80 hours is about 40 hours(sometimes 50 hehehe) more each week than I want to put into it. I'm from the school of hard knocks. I landed where I am today by working my a** off and I don't regret it for a minute. You sound a lot like my oldest daughter. She is 26 years old. She was pre-pharmacy. When my brother was diagnosed with a terminal form of blood-related cancer, she abruptly decided to go into nursing. She had a LOT of math and science she didn't need for nursing and then lacked in other areas, which prolonged her degree, but I'm proud to say she is now precepting and will graduate in May. She is still "not sure what she wants to do," so I see more college in the future. But like I tell my angel of a daughter, GO FOR IT!

My mother has worked in my old school system since my older sister was in high school. And I knew as soon as I started tutoring people in college that I really like helping people learn things and found that the more I did it the more enjoyment I got out of the material as well.

I would eventually like to get into teaching h/s business, but I find literature AMAZING (as corny as it sounds)...and the more I get into my classes the more I LOVE reading and discussing different authors and works. It amazes me how GOOD literature is truly timeless and how it can transcend time and impact people on so many different levels.

I enjoyed the "learning" aspect of accounting (my last job was in accounting policy and research) but at the end of the day I just felt like I didn't do ANYTHING for anyone...and I couldn't take that amount of time spent doing something that I might have been good at but just didn't do anything "for my soul".....

So away with the really nice paying job and hello to the lesser paid money and MUCH greater paid soul career!!!

And you daughter sounds like an amazing person!! Good for you!!

Gus is quite adorable.
I am glad that you are going into teaching. Don't let my story scare you. High School teachers are in demand, especially in this area. Where I live there is an abundance of elementary teachers, but this is what I love and where I want to be.
I decided to become a teacher after I had three of my boys and knew that my first marriage was ending. Prior to this I worked at a bank. Teaching is definately interesting and enjoyable. You will be glad that you made this change! I wish you the best as you complete your degree and enter your new career.

OT Poor Rabbit

by

A man is driving along a highway
and sees a rabbit jump out
across the middle of the road.
He swerves to avoid hitting it,
but unfortunately
the rabbit jumps right in front of the car.
The driver,
a sensitive man as well as an animal lover,
pulls over and gets out to see
what has become of the rabbit.
Much to his dismay,
the rabbit is dead.
The driver feels so awful
that he begins to cry.
A beautiful blonde woman
driving down the highway
sees a man crying on the
side of the road
and pulls over.
She steps out of the car
and asks the man what's wrong.
"I feel terrible," !
he explains,
"I accidentally hit this rabbit
and killed it."
The blonde says,
"Don't worry."
She runs to her car
and pulls out a spray can.
She walks over to the limp, dead rabbit,
bends down,
and sprays the contents onto the rabbit.
The rabbit jumps up,
waves its paw at the two of them
and hops off down the road.
Ten feet away the rabbit stops,
turns around and waves again,
he hops down the road another 10 feet,
turns and waves, hops another ten feet,
turns and waves,
and repeats this again and again and again,
until he hops out of sight.
The man is astonished.
He runs over to the woman and demands,
"What is in that can?
What did you spray on that rabbit?"
The woman turns the can around
so that the man can read the label.

"Hair Spray -

Restores life to dead hair,

and adds permanent wave."

HAPPY EASTER

The statue doesn't have rose ears, had too much black pigment around the nose and it's red, not red brindle.

Hey Gary .... here's what my IT buddy told me about widescreens

by

"The website is not designed for widescreen so they will continue to get the white space. They would have to increase the resolution on the computer to make the icons bigger but I wouldn't recommend that." He went on to tell me that no websites are set up for wide screen and the widescreens are mostly good for gaming etc., and also for having more than one program running at the same time. Sort of like having two screens. You can have them side-by-side on the widescreen and move from one to the other. You know I'm the computer doofus. This is my bud that sets up all of my computers before they EVER come home. Does this make sense to you?

Bentley VS *The Insect*

by Shannan

Here are some pics of Bentley I took last night and this morning.....

Sleeping beauty.....

Stretch!!! (see her shaved hiney??? She chewed her hiney into sores)

Groggy girl

And then these....
I woke up this morning to the most foul smell I've ever experienced! Hubby is out of town so he was ruled out quickly. It didn't take long to realize my little Bentley had fogged me out to the couch yet again.
After SEVERAL attempts to get her to go #2 outside she was banned from taking the kids to school with me this morning (there was no way I was sitting in a car with her!).

This is what I found when I walked in the door....

Notice chew toys in the cage... untouched.

Please note wee-wee pad fuzz stuck up her nose and chunk stuck to her eyelash.

She swears it was the cats.

The vet is stumped

by Shannan

This all started last time she boarded! I had posted about her last boarding not long ago... she had lost weight, food had hardly been touched, I called daily to check on her and was told she was doing well, pick her up and am handed meds!

The kicker was that they washed her bedding right before I got there- but they hadn't washed her stuffed dolly! The dolly smelled so badly we had to throw it away... I have a feeling the bed was rank as well.

I think she got sores from spending a week in a pee/poo soaked bed AT HER VETS! (oh yea, I'm quite mad still!).

She went back in on Friday and they wanted to keep her (I won't let her stay there for an hour, let alone several). Anywho... they did all the usual tests, skin scrapings, etc and have come up with nothing. (this was also when she was bitten by my large golden). I have no clue what so ever why she's so itchy and no one has been able to offer ideas. We live in a VERY small town in the middle of nowhere, my vet options are very limited. We're already taking her 40 min to the next town to see this one.

She was on 4 meds. Hubby threw the wrapper away on 2 of them so I'm not sure what they were. The 2 unnamed ones were 2X's daily for 2 days (one I believe was a steroid). She's still on Allerchlor (which is doing nothing) and Clindamycin Hydrochl, and being washed every other day with Hexaclens 2%.

The vet's office and I had a pretty bad blow up Saturday concerning her treatment while boarding and Bentley will no longer be visiting them (shame, she loved her vet. I just can't take her back there with these problems we're having now!). We're meeting a new vet next week for her check up.

Thankfully we only have a couple more weeks....

by Shannan

Her old vet is faxing her records to the vet we're seeing next week and they've already said they'll give me a copy for her new vet in Jacksonville (as soon as we find out!).

It just upsets me! They know Bentley, they know my other pets, they know me! Granted- I don't expect anyone to baby her the way we do but jeez! Everytime we visit them the techs run out to see what color nails she has that week! They know how much she means to me! I don't feel I was asking for to much- feed her her food (I don't know what they fed her but it wasn't from the bag I gave them and judging from the weight loss I don't even want to guess), take her out and let her play for a bit and keep her clean and safe!

The front desk woman was always short each time I called. This last time I made it a point to only call 1-2 times a day instead of the usual 3-4 to check on her. I figured I was making her mad. Each time I called she would put me on hold saying she was going back to check on her.... each time she would tell me she was fine, sleeping, eating, etc.... She never once had the decency to tell me my puppy was sick and had eaten her back end to the point of infection. We would have cut our trip short had we known she was going through that! (or had my neighbor go get her)

While watching the news in Florida I realized MS was about to have a severe storm- Bentley is terrified of storms (so am I). I called to warn the vet's office of this and the woman acted like I was nuts.

When I took her to board she weighed a tad over 18lbs. I picked her up at a bit over 15lbs. As of Friday (2 weeks since she boarded) she's at 23.3lbs.

Not sure why I even put the wee-wee pads in her cage anymore though. She's a good girl and has been holding it well through the night. Bentley seems to be scared of the dark though and HATES to step on wet grass... every morning getting her to go #2 is a ordeal (and if she doesn't go she will go in the house! She has to go first thing in the morning).

She's a good girl though. Knowing my cats I wouldn't put it past them to have framed her for this.....

Shannon - I would have beaten her repeatedly about the head and neck!!

by

Really! I work in a boarding/training facility. When clients call to check on their pets, I understand (and tease them a bit) about their anxiety. To have allowed a dog to get in that condition is disgusting - most especially because it was AT A VET. If the girl at the front desk can't be civil - she shouldn't be there. Tough beans if you were "bothering" her. I would have told her to deal with it or put her supervisor on the phone. Grrrr - this obviously rubs a raw nerve...
Hope your new vet can figure out what's going on and get her fixed up quickly.
BTW - I'd take out the pee pads AND stuffed animals from her crate so she doesn't choke. Give her a puppy kong (with a little peanut butter) or something more durable to chew.
Sorry - this was too long!

Re: Shannon - I would have beaten her repeatedly about the head and neck!!

by Shannan

I worked at an animal hospital in Sugarland, TX... we always made it a point to know how each pet was treated at home so that they could have comparable treatment with us. If we had one like Bentley that liked to be rubbed down first thing in the morning and the parents told us- that pet would have special rub down time!

Knowing how vets run I tried to make everything as smooth as possible. She had a list with her daily routine (again, I didn't expect the full shabang). Her foods with scoops and times listed for feeding (she doesn't have to eat at the exact time- she free feeds at home for now), all contact numbers... everything she needed to make her stay nice.

Bentley is the baby of this house. My daughter is 11, son is 7... there are no more kids coming from me! She's the first female animal that has ever come into our lives also which makes her extra special. Besides... she's bonded with me (I'm actually more of a cat person so our connection is extra strange)

I can't see her boarding anytime in the near future though. We're going to Houston this week and she'll be making the trip with us. I don't see anymore trips to Jacksonville until the move and once there hubby will watch the pets on my trips I have planned.

toss those pads

by Sue/Bear

they can be dangerous.

Bear chewed one up so bad and stuffing got so far up his nose I couldnt get it out. Had to go to the vet. I tossed them all in the trash and went to a hospital supply place and got a chair pad as someone suggested. Cost me $12.

Waterproof on one side, cotton cloth on the other and is machine washable for 30-40 times.

He hasn't had but a few accidents in the house since he was 15 weeks old (right after the pad incident) but keep the pad on the floor just in case.

by Shannan

Thanks Gary

She's actually looking great right now, the shaved areas make it look horrible.
I took these pics about 5 min ago... right now she has no sores remaining. Its been 2 weeks of constantly watching her and stopping her from biting. Until this morning I litterally couldn't leave her alone for more than a mad dash run to the grocery store (I ran to Wally World last week and came home to find her back side completely bloody. I wasn't gone but about 1 1/2 hrs!). We couldn't use an Elizabethan collar on her because the sores were also under her neck (the reason she's not wearing a collar!).

She really didn't appriciate being woken for pics!

O/T prayers and good thoughts needed

by

I have had a very hectic week and have not even been able to skim the posts lately!
I do feel like many of you are like family to me since I have been visiting BDW, so I am turning to you like I would turn to my family.
I just learned today that I am being RIFed. The school district that I work for is in deep debt, around 12 million dollars. This is my third year there and I survived last year's cuts. I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I do want to get out of the district because the upper administration is really horrible.
My immediate building administration is wonderful, and so are my coworkers. Our students come from homes with very low incomes and often disfunctional families. They have many issues and our jobs are very challenging because of the behaviors. I have grown used to these issues and built positive relationships with many of the students. I want to work with them. Leaving the people I work with will be very hard.
The worst part is that I hate big changes. Finding a job in this area may be difficult, even for an experienced teacher, since the largest district in the area is letting many teachers go. We will all be out there looking for work!
Sorry this is so long! I really needed to vent. Naturally, I am expecting the best, and fearing the worst (lifestyle changes.)I hate the thought of having to downgrade Paddington's food to Old Roy!
Just kidding, I don't think I could do that no matter how bad things get.

What district can afford to give away a good teacher!

by Mary Lou, Olivia and Archie

They are predicting a teacher shortage in the next five to ten years. There is one here in North Carolina now. I am sure you will have an outlet that will probably pay you more and appreciate you more. However, it is to your district's detriment to let go of a good teacher.

Been there...

by

So sorry to hear of your situation. Two years ago, I was on strike for two months, ended up having my position cut (after 18 years in the dist.) 15 miles from where I live. My position was reinstated to half time but I got a call from the principal of the middle school in the town I live in, there was an opening in FACS. At almost 50, I took the chance and took the new job. I NEVER would have dreamed there would be an opening as all the teachers are about my age. I am in my second year, I have one prep, drive seven minutes and I love my new job. I am sharing this just to let you know there may be hope and something will come up; education is weird that way. Don't be afraid to take a chance. Feel free to email me if you need to vent anymore. I left what has to be the worst school district in the country.

What do you teach and where do you live? I am in central Minnesota.

Thanks for sharing your story

by

It is very inspiring, and gives me hope. I am glad that things worked out for you. I live in MD, but teach in Delaware, because the schools in my area are "county club" schools with little behavior problems. As a result, teachers stay put and openings are especially scarce in Elementary.

So, I travel to Delaware and teach in the city. I teach second grade. My kids this year are actually pretty well-behaved for the typical population here. Last year, I had several children with serious behavioral and untreated mental health issues. It was challenging, but overall I still enjoy seeing my former students throughout the day and it is hard to imagine leaving the school and not seeing them again, especially certain students who really made my job worthwhile to me when things were rough.

I am hoping and praying that all of this is for the best. I know my family would be better off if I were closer to home. I would certainly be better off in most any other district because our district is so unstable right now. In your situation what happened to you was really a blessing. I am hoping that this is also the case here.

RIFing is very common around here

by Marissa

Hi Barbara,

I am a second year high school business teacher and I was RIFed a couple of weeks ago. In Illinois, where I teach, RIFing is actually pretty common. Many districts RIF non-tenured and non-certified employees only to hire them back when next year's budget is approved over the summer.

I actually found out I was RIFed and then signed a contract the next day to buy a home. I'm really not that worried about my position for next year. I know that might not be the case with you, but you might be able to talk to your co-workers to get a general feeling about the situation.

Hope all turns out for the best.

They're losing a great teacher. Not many teachers are willing to go to a school like that. I teach in South Florida and also refuse to teach at the country club type schools. I work with severly austistic kids and I love it. I can easily go anywhere else but why would I.

Boo & Clovis' names

by

Boo's name comes from two sources, my favorite holiday (Halloween), and my favorite novel/movie, To Kill A Mockingbird . Scout's name also comes from the latter, as does Cat Bastard's official name, Atticus.

Clovis' name comes from a Stephen King novel/movie whose title I'm forgetting right now. The movie was about a mother & son who appeared human but were actually cat like monsters. But, they were terrified of real cats, the only creature that could kill them. One of the characters in the movie was a good hearted deputy who brought his cat with him in his patrol car all the time. The cat's name was Clovis, and he ended up being the hero of the movie. I liked the name, and gave it to a stray cat that I took in not long after seeing the movie.

Gary, have you read Cell yet???

by Shannan

Usually I'm not a Stephen King fan but this one I simply couldn't put down!!!

We had picked out Bentley's name when we were looking for a Bulldog. Not sure why exactly we choose that name, we liked it though and it fit her perferctly! (her registered name is Tator Tot- her favorite food).

Same with our goldens, Ben and Joey.... not sure why exactly those names were picked but they fit them sell.

JJ (the large orange tabby) was named after my dear friend James (another orange tabby). We adopted JJ on the 1 year anniversary of putting James to sleep (drove 8 hrs to the shelter after finding him on Petfinder).

TJ came next (another orange Tabby). Same shelter. His full name is Tripple James. Sadly TJ somehow got outside and we haven't been able to find him again

Then came Ditto (yep, an orange tabby), same shelter. Named Ditto because I ran out of James names.

And then came Tommy (how did you guess he's an orange tabby????). Named Tommy by my son.... not sure where the name came from. He's not a shelter cat.... he's a tailless mooch that kinda followed me home one day (ok... so he got a ride).

We also have a pet hermit crab named Plucker. His real name can only be said by the adults though (it begins with an F). He was named by me after bringing him home from the pet store.... I reached in his box and like a dummy, grabbed him wrong. Long story short it took 8 stitches to put my thumb back together. Upon meeting me at the hospital hubby looked in the box to see the cause of our new hospital bill and being the smart butt that he is he ask me his name.... Stupid Mother Plucker was thence named.

Crap! Hail! Time to go!

Freaking out a little...

by

Q had to be scheduled for his neutering tomorrow. I've been treating him for recurrent UTI secondary to prostatitis and he kept having problems. The vet's also going to check his palate and take care of that (which will probably be needed). This vet came highly recommended by another bully owner, and I don't have time to track down another, right now. But, when I got the estimate (prepared by a tech - NOT the vet), they had ACE listed as a pre-med! I called the office and had them put on Q's chart "NO ACE!" and will also make sure it's VERY clear when I talk to the vet in the AM. I was already nervous, but now I'm a little freaked... Need prayers and good thoughts for little man Q tomorrow (lots of booze for me...!).

Ace is a sedation...

It helps induce anesthesia, but it's VERY BAD for brachycephalic breeds. It collapses the airways and the dog dies. Bullies should NEVER get Acepromazine! That's why I was a little freaked. I'm sure (hopeful) it'll be OK. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

good thoughts

by Sue/Bear

he will be fine. Just demand NO ACE!!! They will probably give either propfol, ketamine/valium mixture or something that starts with a "t" (cant remember) injection instead. Most bullie vets use propofol.

Make sure they write down the size of the trachea tube so you have it for your records and ask them what it was when you get him. Also make sure they give you a list of post-ops if his palate is done as far as food, etc. Most tell you to feed soft food for a few days as it's less irritating to the throat.

He'll be fine. Lots of us have great soft and chilled foods we can tell you to use

Hey Olivia

Hate to hear that about Q. A bully buddy of mine told me she prefers Cevo (that could possibly be misspelled; I did it phonetically). You know I've got your back with the prayers and happy thoughts. Funny thing about us. You are a lot like me. I see you didn't mention what the estimate was. You were more concerned with what they were actually going to do. A true bully/rotti Mom! When Cooper went though his surgeries at AU, I didn't even know there could be a problem with Ace. Cooper's heart bypass surgery took almost 3 hours and I'm not sure what they used, but it had to be something that would put him deeply to sleep because of the time factor involved. Rest assured, when we return for followup I will find out!

I have no doubt that with you Q in your care, everything will be fine. But, if that vet insists on Ace, I know you'll postpone and find another vet.

Good luck to both of you. I'll be watching for your posts on Q. Hey, how's Kano doing?

O/T I have a real puzzle solver for anyone that can help

by

I love, love baseball. I love love Craig Biggio who is starting his 20th year with the Houston Astros. He began this season yesterday 70 hits short of hitting 3000. They have a countdown on the board at MM Park. Last night he got one hit so now he has 69 more to go. There are 121 games in this season. I want to purchase tickets for the game I figure he will be hitting his 3000th hit. Unfortunately, everyone else will want one also so I have to buy them now or all the games when he is even remotely close will be sold out. Here's the puzzle. 121 games left. 69 more hits needed. He usually gets at least one hit a game (there are times when he doesn't get any) but there are quite a few games where he gets 2 and 3 hits a game. What game should I try to get tickets for? I am trying to figure out when he will be about 5 to 8 hits away and buy tickets for at least 3 games to give me room for error.

I would look at the last 20 games. Maybe even the last 10.

by

Kind of difficult to predict though.

well according to my husband the 'stat' guy...

by

there are 162 games (81 home, 81 road) He says it's possible that if he's on a road trip when he has only 2-3 hits left that he will sit out a game or so until they get back home. He thinks that early-mid July is where he would concentrate... that is barring no injury.
Hope this helps.. I don't watch much baseball... My DH is a HUGE baseball fan - particularly the pirates... of course we are in pittsburgh... Good luck

They haven't registered as of yet. I think that they

by

don't really need anything. They just want all their friends to enjoy themselves.

Sorry I am confused about Avacodos

by Sarah

You say the seeds are bad for a bulldog but you do not eat the seeds, I am so confused!!!

That's correct. You just wouldn't want them to chomp on the seed...

by

if you dropped on the floor or if they got in the trash, etc. The "meat" of the avocado is safe.

Thank you for the clarification, I have also read

by Sarah

on a website just now that most fruits and veggies are bad, so they say!!
They said no potatoes, broccoli, nuts, seeds, peaches, apricots, tomatoes, the list goes on and on, but of course the foods from our own factories is not safe so what the heck eh!!!

Avacodos are used in Natural Vegan diets,

by Sarah

The product is called AvoDerm Naturals dog food, it is so weird how many different opinions are out there, it is hard to keep track of the good and bad information.

Thanks alot for thinking of me. I really did miss BDW.

It was because of you and all the BDW family's thoughts that got me thorugh this time.

I hope to stay on this path for a while.

Thank again for your concern and compassion. If you post some pictures then i can put a name with a face. You probably already did but there were so many I could not keep track. I posted pictures yesterday of my vow renewal with Elvis in Vegas if you want to check it out!

Thanks again! Hope to see you at Bullyfest!
