Oh sorry, I should have...

by

...expanded on that thought.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo) - of some critical acclaim. Selma Hayek played her in a film about her life a couple years back. Anyway, she had some fairly pronounced eyebrows (which you can see in much of her artwork). And when I saw the pic of your little cutie-patootie her eyebrows (which I totally love, BTW) made me think of Frida Kahlo...

No need to apologize! It was kind of a random reference. I just saw the eyebrows and thought "Frida"!

I was also just thinking that I like Laila for Laila Ali - something like Bigshots Mama Said Knock You Out - call name Laila...

Or maybe I'm just tired after a long day and should stop playing the name game...

One more thought...

by

...BigShots Mona Lisa - call name Madonna...

"In Italian, ma donna means my lady. This became madonna, and its contraction mona. Mona is thus a polite form of address, similar to Ma’am, Madam, or my lady in English. In modern Italian, the short form of madonna is usually spelled Monna, so the title is sometimes Monna Lisa, rarely in English and more commonly in Romance languages such as French and Italian."

O/T: hey, Kansas City Chiefs fans, congrats on your draft picks

by

that's two years in a row that y'all have picked a LSU player with your first round pick. I don't know how well Dwayne Bowie from last year's draft worked out for the Chiefs, but the Chiefs sure got a great one this year in Glen Dorsey.

I was stationed in Kansas City when I was in the Marine Corps. Y'all sure get some cold winters, brrrrr. I hope our Louisiana guys can adjust to them.

More O/T: Sue, the Chicago Bears may gotten the best steal of the draft in Matt Forte

by

he is one heck of a runner, and like Peyton Manning, he is known for his incredible dedication and preparation. He was the offensive MVP of the Senior Bowl. If he had played at a college bigger than Tulane, he probably would have gone in the first half of the first round. I was hoping the Saints would draft him.

Bullyfest 2008

by Eileen w/HeavenSent

Bullyfest 2008 was absolutely phenomenal. The response to Bullyfest was overwhelming with people out to support rescue. I have never seen such a crowd, the dogs and everything ran smoothly and everyone had a great time.

I would also like to take a moment to thank everyone at the Bulldog Club of Philadelphia and Lower Susquehanna Bulldog Club that also contributed to making this day a huge success.

I will post pictures later.

need help 911

by

Little Baxter is just a week shy of 4 months, & he has Demedix Mange. He started yesterday on antibiotics, Ivermectin, & had a dip lastnight. He isn't holding down any food & I can't get him to drink much water. After he threw up this morning, I waited a while & tried some plain mashed up sweet potatoe with a tsp. of his canned food, but after about 10 minutes he threw that up. It's been a while now, & I am trying very small pieces of plain baked potatoe. He is obviously hungry, & is eating it...... but what if he throws up again. My regular vet is out of town, & I don't know of any others in this area. Advice please!!

Re: 24 lb

I would think about skipping the dose tomorrow rechecking with the vet about the amount needed on Monday (unless you can talk to him tonight or tomorrow) and try to get chicked broth into him, at 24 lbs you have a bit more body weight than a 10 lb pup but it sounds like something (I suspect the ivermectin) has not agreed with him and I would talk to the vet before I gave any more and try the chicken broth then work up.

Seems like Baxter may be a little over-medicated...

by Judy & Dolly

The dip plus ivermectin seems like a lot to me. I thought the treatment for demodex was one or the other of the above but not both at the same time. My Dolly was on oral ivermectin for quite a long time for demodex and it never made her throw up. It did depress her appetite. However, she did get sick taking antibiotics at the same time for a skin infection related to the demodex. Could be the antibiotic??? Also the highest dose Dolly took was .8 ml of ivermectin and she weighed 48-50 lbs at the time. I think you could just hold off on the ivermectin until Monday when you can call your vet during regular hours & tell him what's going on. Just nurse Baxter along with small amounts of food that he likes. Good Luck to you & Baxter!

Ivermectin

by Céline

Is your baby taking Ivermectin orally? It's really strong stuff. When Stella took it (she had mange twice when she was a puppy), I would give her a little yogourt to coat her stomach. I do the same thing when she gets antibiotics. I just think it's hard on their tummy.

You might want to wait a bit before feeding him (a few hours). Then give him a bit of plain yogourt first. Then, if that stays down, go to some plain rice and boiled chicken. See if that works.

If he's still not holding stuff down, maybe the combo of the Ivermectin, antibiotics and the dip is too much on his system.

When Stella had her demodex, we did the Ivermectin and possibly antibiotics for a while but not the entire time. We didn't do any of the dips at all.

Dear Toni, you either do the oral Ivermectin OR the dip...

by

NOT BOTH. I think you need another opinion. Don't beat yourself up...i had to 'dip' my first dog 35 years ago...it was a one time dip and she was cured forever and lived to a healthy 14 years of age!!!

The new thinking is the oral dose according to weight and over 60 days...for a a 4 month pup ~ 25 lbs...I THINK THE DOSE IS 1/2 ml. in the mouth once a day for 60 days...

YOU MUST CHECK THIS WITH A RELIABLE VET. There should not be much side effects and it will clear up the problem. Get a third opinion if you are not happy...you are talking about the welfare of your sweet baby.

I hear people debating the oral vs. 'dip' but the oral is much easier on their system according to my vet. YOU get an exact dose. He treated his 'rescue dog' and the dog was totally fine and no more mange.

sounds like a bit of over kill for a small puppy.

how much ivermectin is he getting?

I would stop it for a few days, then start at a very low dose and work up to the wt that is correct for him.

Make sure you are giving him vitamins, vit e, vit c, zinc....

newly found sewing talent. It's not done yet. I still have to make it pretty (with ribbons.)

I usually give my sibling sister and my sisters-in-law a little something for Mother's Day. I made a small, reusable, fabric gift bag for them and thank goodness there are only 4 sisters total. I don't know yet what we're giving my mom and MIL.

A fabric gift packaging:

reason why I bought a sewing machine is to make outfits/costumes for Bernard. In time.....

I bought a pattern for an apron. I've cut everything but really don't know how to piece it together cleanly. I need to learn basic sewing lingo because I don't understand the instructions. Basting? Selvage?

basting is when you legthen your stich so if you make a mistake you can easily take it out again. the selvage is the edge of the material I do believe it is the edge that comes finished not the edges that they cut to get it off the bolt.

there should be a dial or a roller looking thing that has numbers on it there might be two of them one should be for the length of the stich the other if there is two will be for the bobbin thread tension. If you take a picture of your machine I might be able to help you figure it out. Sewing is actually alot of fun and people like a gift that you made more than something that is bought. I've only been sewing for 2 years and not all the time because I don't get alot of spare time! arg kids I mean the 2 legged ones not our four pawed friends!

Tiger Woods
Athletic & Poised

Calm and cool on the outside, feisty and determined on the inside, Mattingly is everyman athlete Tiger Woods!

Mattingly proved at an early age that he had the skills to pay the bills, running circles around the competition when he was just a wee whippersnapper. Thanks to his tremendous successes, Mattingly has set aside an entire wing of his luxurious shelter just to house his collection of trophies and ribbons. A high-class pet with exquisite taste, Mattingly prefers to be seen with long-legged female mates, preferably those bred from Scandinavian lines. Unwilling to rest on his haunches, Mattingly has no time to hang out at the 19th hole and pet himself on the back—he's got a lot more green grass to frolic across before throwing in the towel.

What celebrity would your pet be? I'm Johnny Knoxville! Find out at Dogster.com

The kind of pet that can leap tall fences in a single bound (or not, but give it a shot anyhow), Ozzy is the original Jackass, Johnny Knoxville!

Going through the pain so you don't have to, Ozzy knows that he trots a fine line between funny and stupid, but he doesn't care—he's laughing about it all the way to the pet store. His over-the-top antics make you grimace with fear and you often find it hard to believe that he actually enjoys playing the class clown. But Ozzy laps it up and continues to defy the odds, despite your warnings and concerns. Other males in the pack tend to be a little jealous of Ozzy, but the females find him simply dreamy. A die-hard good ol' boy, Ozzy is more of a General Lee type than a Knight Rider, but give him enough time to think things through and he's sure to find a way to wreck both vehicles at the same time.

I don't know why it doesn't surprise me. haha

That was fun!

A new rescue horror story...

by

We took in Kylie today, 3yr old unspayed female who was living outside w/out water or shelter, fed 1cup day and has ribs showing, infections(heat) in both ears w/hematoma, front legs have open wounds that are bleeding, cherry-eye duct covers 2/3 of both eyes and is inflammed. Dog was owner-surrender after they tried to sell her on Craigs List...Tracey convinced them to surrender this one...there is another bitch on premises almost as bad (or maybe worse cause that one is limping also). Kylie seems "feverish" and Tracey (foster mom)will check temp and bathe her to clean wounds...already put her on a/b's and pain meds. Dog is understandably frightened/trembling, but did drink fresh water as if it were a luxury.

We'll get her to our vet on Monday and she will already be somewhat better by then...unfortunately we have experience in taking in such horrible cases. I know some of your other rescue groups do too, sadly. Please keep Kylie in your thoughts. We'll try to get some photos posted soon.

So sad that the other female is still living there in those conditions. What's wrong with people??? How difficult can it be to provide water?

I picked up a severe mange case Thursday evening from a shelter near me. He has mange, worms, a huge IDC, and entropion, among other things. Mary is fostering him. She said he's an absolute love.

I have the luggage tag with this bully on it. There is a whole collection of Nigel the Bulldog stuff. Here's an example.

There is also the University of Georgia Bulldogs stuff. UGGA is always (I believe) a white bully.

I also have an all-white bulldog toilet brush holder that my sister's m-i-l bought for me. It's pretty cool.

I have this one, but with different markings...

by

I co-owned the model for this figurine so I have one of the six made with markings to actually match Spy's coloration. He was mostly white and red, and just as handsome as shown. My Otis is the son (offspring) from Spy. What I wanted to say was that they were available at several gift stores around the Southwest for $350 so the pricing on Ebay seemed a bit high...and when you figure in shipping and insurance, well its quite pricey!!

Have you contacted Sandicast to see if you can purchase it directly from them as well?

Lenox made a cute reclining white bulldog with the eyes and nose painted "gold"...as I recall it was under one hundred, and I bought it at a chinaware store in a mall. Maybe this is available online also, or at least you can get a look at it...nice glaze, nice design.

Happy Day here

by

Mark and i have been married 11 yeasr today! Wow, what a road! We went to th casino last night and and I won 600 bucks. I was so excited because i never win.

And Samson celebrated another birthday this week. Happy 5th Birthday Samson. We kept it low key and he got his usual Cheeseburger and large fries on his special day. Hes not up to partying right now since his other ear is infected and may need an ear ablastion. Poor guy will have no more hearing if we head down that road and he has developed some type of skin infection near his inner back legs. My guess is staph and its from his incessant refusal to get up of his butt and let some air to his skin. So started antibiotics today and going back to his old regime of Ivrmectin injections once a month. I hate to go back down that road but it worked and kept his skin issues at bay.
I am just greatful to have him with us another year.

Aggressive Bulldog?> Help

by Todd

Hi all, we had an incident today. My 7 year old bully, Harlee shares the house with a 7 year old Autistic boy named Kaito. He really loves dogs and is constantly following Harlee around. This morning, Harlee apparently lunged @ Kaito's face. No punture wounds; however, the impact to Kaito's nose caused bleeding and he also has some small scratches on his face. She never acts this way with older children or adults, she just seems to have a dominence problems w/small children. Of course, we'll never leave them alone again and if the problem persists, I can always crate her. She's a very loving and affectionate dog and generally loves all people except for small children. My guess is as she gets older, she seems to be more cranky. I'm wondering if any of you know any other suggestions or training procedures I can do to help calm her aggression? I don't know what I'd do if she really hurt a child. Thanks in advance!

by Céline

My initial reaction would be to wonder if the child did anything to provoke her, even if it was unintentional. Were there people there when it happened. Do we know she was aggressive or was she just being a bully and roughousing. Maybe she just banged into his nose my mistake...

Thanks, my guess

by Todd

is he did do something to provoke her; however, my thinking is it simply doesn't matter and I feel its something that I probably should have corrected a long time ago. In the last 3-4 years, she has shown a lot of dominence toward small children. She was this way toward my oldest nephew but as he grew older, she seemed to accept him. She even lunged @ my ypungest nephew on xmas eve 2 years ago.

Aggression

by Céline

Sounds to me like your idea of putting her in her crate or in another room while little kids are visiting may be a good idea. The idea is for everyone to stay safe and if she's grumpy around little ones, why play with fire.

Again, maybe some of the real trainers will have other ideas for you.

We dealt with having no small kids around for years. I kept thinking if I just avoid having small kids around, I wont have any problems. Then it started with some older children, and it got to the point where she was biting my husband and myself. We tried training, SLOW socialization etc to no avail..
She was put down on Thursday.
I hope you fare better with yours

I would try having a trainer come into your home...

by Kathy, Ollie and Chester

and observe and give you advice. We did this for Ollie who is wonderful with us and our grandkids but his behavior to other dogs and some adults was unacceptable. The trainer pointed out a lot of things that we never realized. And gave us training advice to correct his behavior. I think our initial visit was $125 (in Phoenix) but worth every penny. There is a list of certified trainers on the home page. At 7 years of age she might just be too old to be followed around and annoyed, they can get grumpy as they get older. I would also have her checked medically to make sure nothing is going on (lyme disease, etc).

Having a trainer come to our home to observe our behavior is probably sound advise. She's the most spoiled mammal in our home. I'm sure there are things we do that promote her attitude. Medically, I don't think anything is wrong, other than the normal, allergies, arthritis etc....LOL

Thanks

I don't think

by Todd

she's that agreessive. She is always very affectionate and loves all people. She has never nore do I belive she would ever bite an adult. In fact, she has never even bit a child; although, she has snapped before. I'm trying to prevent it from progressing. Its like she's trying to domincate the small children and seems jealous when we give small children attention. She loves all people and gets really excited when guests come over. She does allow children to pet her and @ times she tolerates them. Like I said, she's 7 years old and I believe as she gets older, she's less tolerant.

First see a good Bulldogvet

by

When behaviour changes like this, there is most of the time a medical cause. Lots of Bulldogs around the age of 7 (or earlier) have problems with their joints, artrose and/or artritis. This causes pain, which makes being followed around by a kid more than she can handle.

I don't have experience with autistic kids, but expecting a dog to cope on a daily basis with a kid that is constantly following her around is a lof to ask of her! When she is fit and well, she might be able to cope, but when old age and pain are involved, it just might be enough..... Realise that a dog knows exactly what he/she does when she lunges. It is a warning, take it seriously!

Find a Bulldogvet (look on the homepage) and have her medical situation assessed. It might be something simple like a uti, but if artrosis is involved it is a different story. Medication can be a good option, but a dog with such a condition and living with a kid that won't leave her alone is always a risk.

If your dog gets a clean bill of health, find yourself a trainer, preferably with experience with autistic kids (may be his school kan help you with that), to find a way for your dog and the kid to live together in a better way.

May be she isn't the right dog for your household, with an autistic kid around. Then may be finding another home through your breeder or rescue might be a better option for your kid and for your dog!

Thank Ineke

by Todd

I do take it very seriously. I'm not committed to living with this child, we're all just in a roomate situation and if it got to "that" point, I would simply move. Talking to her breeder isn't an option, since she came from what I would consider a puppymill. I even sued her breeder and won. I know she has arthritis not sure what Artrose is? I do have a very good bulldog vet and I will probably take her in to have her assessed. I know she does experience pain and gets daily joints meds to help. Thanks again!

Monday, please!

by

There are a lot of old age related jointproblems, and there is the language aswell (I'm dutch).
I believe artrose is the fact that joints are damaged by age, artritis is the infection that goes with it most of the time.

I don't know if your girl is allready on painmedication (like Metacam, or Rymadyl, or something like that), or that it is allready necessary, but you might consider going to the vet asap. If she is experiencing less pain, it will improve her quality of life which will make it easier for her to handle the kid......

The fact is that you have to prevent that she will bite the kid (you'll will be in trouble then and so she will!!!!!). Painmedication can help her cope while you are finding another place to live. After moving you can probably diminish the medication.

Good luck!

Ineke

do you

by Rhiann

know exactly what precepitated the incident? As the dog gets older, your right..they can be less tolerate of children and my guess is alot less tolerate of a Autistic child. I would only suggest as you have already staed. No more unsuperived time together between the two.
best of luck. Not an easy situation and explaining it to your child is going to be difficult but it is for his safety that he can no longer be alone with the dog at all or maybe ever.

Its really strange. I think she sees us/adults as "HERS" and if a small child try to come between us, thats when she get jealous.

Harlee vs. children

by

Dogs that simply "tolerate" children are far more likely to bite them then dogs that like children, big difference. Harlee's issues with small humans is pretty common, thats why kids and dogs can never be left unattended. She has already been pretty clear with her opinion, listen to her. As she gets older, her tolerance will lessen, don't put her in a situation where she feels the need to bite.

A trainer can help you develop a management plan, maybe help Harlee better tolerate children but she can never be trusted with them. Remember, you are her only advocate, she trusts you to keep her safe and protected, sometimes we have to protect our dogs from themselves.

Good luck

IDEA! Post your favorite link day! (here is one of mine)

by

Make your own Zelda card and they send it for you!

http://zeldawisdom.ink2.com/

You pick a card, write what you want inside, address it, pick a stamp, and they physically send a paper card for you! It's reasonable at $2.95 plus .41 postage. Can't beat that! And it's fun to create.

I love the Zelda cards because she looks so much like Roxy.

Check it out!

next to Bulldogsworld. Did you know you can upload your own Bullies photos (or any photo) on the insides of the card too? I won honorable mention for Zelda's Valentine's contest. She picked my greeting for the front of the card and put my name of the back. Carol Gardner called me and we talked for about 1/2 hour, she's SO NICE!!

Congrats on the win! I've spoken to her too. She is very nice. I was looking for something that had been discontinued. We spoke a long time and she mailed me what I was looking for.

She remembered me and emailed me when she was looking for a new "Zelda Like" puppy. She thought maybe I bred Roxy or knew of someone with a litter. She emailed me another time when she was looking for a font Courtney used on a photo I sent her.

bestbuy is the worst

by

we bought our TV 6 months ago on a no interest for 12 months or so, well instead of charging us interest they charged us debt cancellation which is so you dont have to pay the rest of the debt if the person who has the debt out dies...

what the heck ever...

so we paid the TV off as soon as we found that out and it was the hardest thing to turn that debt cancellation off because the guy on the other end of the phone for best buy couldn't speak a lick of english

And the newest twist I have found, when calling "tech support"

by

which is such a loose term these days....I get a guy who barely speaks English, but says his name is Mike, or John, or Joe, or Lewis, or....any other American name they think of at the time. That way I might THINK I am talking to someone in America. Riiiiigght.

lord help us with these 2 dogs-pictures

by

we got the little baby St. Bernard yesterday and Vito is doing great with her, im really impressed. He is trying to hump her a little but i watch them closely because she's so small and i correct him. I know he's just trying to establish dominance but i dont want him getting carried away, its pretty obvious he's dominant over a 7 week old puppy.

The puppy is doing very well too, already eating and drinking a ton and playing too, she gets little spirts of energy then she's on her way to sleep for awhile

i dont know if Vito is allergic to her or he got hurt wrestling with Kane but his left eye is squinting and red and i feel real bad for him, good thing we have a Vet appointment for the whole gang on monday.

here are some pictures
