The Six nations Arrows put a serious dent in the St. Catharines Athletics chances for a fourth straight appearance in the Ontario final. The Arrows played about as good a road period as they could have. They were stonewalled a few times early by goalie Attwood, and saw St. Catharines take a 1-0 lead on a Frank Resetarits goal at 2:51. Despite St. Catharines pouring it on, they maintained their composure and held the fort. They got a break in the form of a penalty 10 nimutes in and didn't waste their oppurtunity. Craig Point solved Attwood at 10:12 then Point set up Rayce Vyse for the go ahead goal. Before the A's could catch their breath, captain Monture set up Scott Ditzell and it was 3-1 Arrows. So in the space of 1:40 the A's went from up 1 to down 2.
The A's started the period with a 2 man advantage but were unable to capitalize. The Arrows now sensing the A's might be rattled, came at St. Kitts hard. When Minto Cup champ and former A Brett Bucktooth scored to give the visitors a 4-1 lead, the large contingent of Arrows fans were on their feet. The game seemed to lose any of its flow at that point. Both teams were overly anxious with their passes resulting in some rather shabby lacrosse. It was'nt until the 11 minute point when Corey Small scored on the powerplay, that the game got interesting again. St. Kitts then closed to within one on a fluker from Dylan Llord. Just as the 30 second clock was about to expire, he fired a shot at the net. The shot went wide, hit the boards, then the back of Vanevery who had come out to play the angle, and it went off Vanevery and in to the net. That sent the teams to the intermission with Nations holding a 4-3 lead.
No scoring in the first 5 minutes of the 3rd. At 5:24 captain Jamie Floris tied the game up. He was in the crease when he scored, however referees Moxam and Nurse ruled he was pushed in from behind, and allowed the goal to stand. The A's now realizing they had a chance despite not having played their best, played with renewed enthusiasm. Dylan Llord on a nice effort gave the A's a 5-4 lead at 8:00 even. The A's then had some good shots, but were met by some nice saves by Vanevery. Just as it was in the first the A's took a penalty and there went the ol momentum swing again. Matt Myke scored a beauty from the slot to knot things at 5 the goal coming at 14:41. Only 29 seconds later Mitch Nanticoke restored Nations lead. A minute later it was the Arrows turn for a fluker when Attwood went for a loose ball, passed it to his defenceman, who then made a cross floor pass that was either misfired or knocked down, I'm not sure. The result was Craig Point got the ball , had a wide open net and made no mistake burying to give the Orange shirts a 2 goal lead. Once again the A's had given up 3 goals in a minute and a half. Don McIlroy did close the gap to 7-6 at 16:47 but that was as close as they got.
So now the A's are forced to win 3 straight a monumental task at this point. But all A's players should be proud, as they are wearing the sweater with pride. They have really stepped it up in these playoffs and the experience they are gaining is invaluable.
The Arrows are also impressive. They are also young and improving. I believe the key to their win tonight was they were much more in control of their enotions than on Wednesday night here. The stayed out of the box and were rewarded.
