Gales /Akwesane

An exciting afternoon of lacrosse at the home of the Gaels today ,this game had everything for the fans and more .The Lightning jumped out to an early lead and looked to be in full control of the game exiting the first period with a 3-1 lead .The Gaels kept fighting back in a marathon second period that saw Akwesanes Goaler penalised for having too wide a set of shoulder pads on .The Gaels insisted they were still illegal and challenged the refs again, this time the gaels were penalised for delay of game .A third request yielded what the Gaels were after and the Lightnings goaler Daylan Adams was banished to the showers Angus Goodleaf came in in relief and stoned the Gaels many times in the third .The Lightning took some exception to the way the Gaels defenders were handling people coming across the middle,Andy Glenn laid a good heavy check on a lightning player ,however #13 Goodleaf decided to leave his bench to discuss the hit with Mr Glenn and hit him in the face with his helmet ,too bad he was still wearing it .These actions cost Mr Goodleaf maybe the rest of the season ,on the insuing 10 minute power play (5 for fighting,A game misconduct for leaving the bench 5 minutes for attempt to injure and a second game misconduct )the Gaels got close and rounded out the second behind by a score of 5-4.The third period saw the Gaels come out gunning and using their vaunted fast transition game to its fullest ,Colin Baker from Goalie Joel Weber wowed the crowd again with the long ball to the streaking Baker .The game ended tied at 5s.The Gaels struck quickly in the OT with goals at 1:22 and 2:43 to take a two goal lead .#20 Wes Oakes blasted one past Weber to bring them to within 1, however the Gaels defense was full measure and wouldnt let Akwesane get a clear shot on net .Refs did a good job today (Wiswell and Watson )in front of a huge partisan crowd ,the only downer on the day was the constant stickwork by the Lightning while the refs backs were turned ,no need for that when you are trying to win a championship .The remainder of this series goes next weekend on the Island. This was a fine two days for lacrosse a lot of people who had never attended a game before, were in attendance and were treated to a first class performance by both teams ,lets keep playing hard guys and dont let this series be decided by the penalty box.Ron Messer PR Green Gaels
