Brooklin wins BIG in opener

by ajaxlax (Login ajaxlax)

Big 18-8 win before a big crowd at I.Park tonight.Teams felt each other out in first with Brampton leading 3-2.Redmen poured in 11 goals in second and it was all over.Excels as in some other previous games this year could not cope with the passing and speed.
Why Sandersoon left Watson in for entire game is beyond me,felt the other guy(Miller)should have had some P.T. in a game like this.If its going to be run and gun lacrosse will be a short series.(Hope not)

Toronto Sun article on Sanderson

by (Login alder)

It would appear that recent memory does not extend as far back as the early 1960's. There was another accident that left a fine young man paralyzed. It happened in Junior A game between Alderwood and Mimico.
The Mimico player,Jim Smith, was hit from the side and behind as he cut across the top of the crease. The check caused him to lose his balance and stumble awkwardly into the end boards. It was not a particularly hard hit but the consequences were severe. I take time to relate the incident because the history of lacrosse injuries as severe as this one are more important than scoring titles. We tend to gloss over the tragic and unfortunate aspects of the game possibly compromising the safety of the young players. The analogy of war and lacrosse does not cut it. Players accept that injury is part of the game but permanent injury is very remote.
IF,this check was of a violent nature then it must be addressed by the proper authorities. Much of the blame for this type of injury lies with fans, players, coaches, etc who extol the virtues of "toughness". Toughness is not, running opponents, fighting or intimidating them, but we have as a society accepted it as "part of the game". Why do people let some one like Don Cherry speak for them?Take time to really think of the possible consequences of over aggressive behavior in sport. Maybe it is time to have players start to respect the safety of their opponent.
Toughness is about overcoming adversity.

I can remember when you first came in to rink fifteen years ago, and pretty much every time after that. you were always one of the smallest kids on the floor, but that didn't stop you,you were never scared to play with the big kids.
Ever since I started working at the rink I've never seen a sanderson back down from a challenge, and I don't think ill see one now. this is the biggest challenge of your life and I know you will meet it head on as all sandersons would.

Dustin stay strong, and battle hard and ill see you back at the barn soon,my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I want to wish you all the best in your recovery. I know that this is a very difficult time for both you and your family, but you will get through it. My family had to deal with the same injury 5 years ago, and the strength that you will build will be unimaginable. It is going to take a long time and a lot of work but you will make it through. From everything I have read on here, it sounds like you are a tough, strong minded guy to begin with, and that is half of the battle.
The entire lacrosse community is praying for you and wishing you the best, as is everyone who hears your story.
No matter what the outcome, you will find happiness.

And to your entire family, I understand what a trying time this is. But take everything one day at a time and you will make it through. Help Dustin focus on the positive and that will help him recover. Also, don't forget yourselves at the same time. It takes enormous amounts strenth on your part, Dustin needs you and all of your support that I know you will give him.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

A Story For Dustin

by (Login RonPa)

This is a true story, but you'd have to be an old fart like me to remember it.

Many years ago, there was an exciting hockey player named Lou Fontinato.

He played for the Junior A Guelph Biltmore Mad Hatters. Since the Hatters were owned by the New York Rangers, he went straight to them from Junior A.

He played several years for the Rangers, and, was eventually traded to the Montreal Canadiens.

During the course of a game, while digging for the puck in the corner with his head down.

He was checked into the boards(legally) head first and suffered a similar injury to yours.

For three years, all public reports said he would never walk again.

THEN

The Guelph Junior A club publicized an exhibition game for charity against the NHL Oldtimers.

The media kept telling us there would be a "special referee" for the game.

Secrecy prevailed and we had no idea who this might be.

Then came game time.

The linesmen have checked the nets, the players have been introduced.

Then

A tall, straight figure in a striped shirt appeared at the entrance, the crowd stood and cheered as he stepped on the ice.

Have you guessed who it was? You're right!!

It was Lou Fontinato, not "just walking", but SKATING with authority!!!

He ran a successful farm for years after that, near Guelph Lake, then moved to the Eden Mills area to a new farm. A good life for a good man.

So, keep the faith Dustin, do what the doctors say, work hard, stay positive, and, hopefully, we'll be able to add another similar story to our life experiences.

Our Prayers, thoughts and hopes are with you.

Brenda and Ron Pallister (aka RonPa)

I've been involved in lacrosse for over 25 years. A team doesn't go searching for a goalie if they haven't been watching them for some time. Victoria wanted Preece. I'm sure their management has the expertise and knowledge to know a goalie is worth going after. It's too bad you can't see past the nose on your face. Upper level lacrosse organizations don't go after somebody unless they're worth it. He is! Keep watching. You don't seem to be too knowledgeable.

Okay Mike your Uncle's player profile is now on the BIBLE OF LACROSSE. It is in two places on the big 1200 player profiles and item 30 by himself. Print this one off because it won't remain there for too long but he'll always be on the big file (which I keep repeating) if I ever get type I'll change from serial access to keyed access. I must go as I'm working on updating 2001 Coquitlam Adanacs stats and adding the BCLA Junior A stats to the BIBLE. Thanks for being patient but got a lot of stuff on the go.

Jack Gatecliff

by Curious 2 (Login 11121112)

The article re last nights game says the Minto will be played in Gatecliff. Is that the small one beside Garden City Garden or is that the official name of the big old rink.? It would be a disgrace to play a national championship in the small rink. They would lose tons of $. And St Kitts city council would look bad. Please tell me it will be in the big rink!!

Don't know the names of the arenas...

by Anonymous (Login laxative31)

...but the requirement is that the host arena for the Minto have 3,000 seats - that's why Six Nations would have had to play in Brantford.

Jack Gatecliff is the main arena...

by (Login thesportscaster)

The two arena's located in the Garden City Arena Complex are the Rex Steimer, and the Jack Gatecliff. The Minto Cup will be played in the Jack Gatecliff...which was able to squeeze in 3,500 plus for the 1997 Sutherland Cup. It is a great old barn.

The Games will be played at The Garden City Arena, A.K.A. Jack Gatecliff Arena. The name of the small rink is Rex Stimers Arena. And yes the Capacity is just over 3200 with standing room. The last time I've seen 3200 in that arena was 3 years ago when the Jr. B Falcons were in the Ontario Finals (hockey)Game 7. The last time i've seen 3200 in there for lacrosse was 10 years ago, almost to the date, when the Jr. A Athletics beat the New westminster Salmonbellies, if my memory serves me corectly, to capture The Minto. The atmosphere in there was unbeliveable on both those dates. Lets pack that storied old building on Division St. and Bring home The Minto again !!!

Should never have changed the enterence of that building. The front of that building was were it all started !!!!

last time used for lacrosse......

by Rainmanjb (Login Rainmanjb)

the last time it was used to capacity for lacrosse was when the great war broke out between Victoria i believe (i was 12) and the st. kitts fans...... that was an experience..... the players trying to get to the fans with there sticks and the crowd chanting siv, siv, siv every time victoria got scored on.... that was fun even when i was 12!!!!

Toronto Sun Article re Dustin Sanderson

by fatcatlax (Login fatcatlax)

By JASON PAUL -- Sun Media

Dustin Sanderson lives and breathes lacrosse. It's in his heart. It's in his blood.

Sanderson is a part of the next generation in the famed Sanderson family to embrace lacrosse -- a family that has given its heart and soul to the game for more than 30 years.

That heart and soul has been shattered, though, after one swift hit: A hit that has changed Dustin Sanderson's life, an accident that has left him paralysed -- an undeserving fate for a kid just 15 years old.

It was supposed to be a big tournament for Sanderson and his lacrosse team, the Orangeville Northmen, last weekend. The players were competing in the Ontario midget championship at the Brampton Sports and Leisure Complex.

During the third period of their game on Saturday, Sanderson was checked awkwardly into the boards by a Kitchener player and was taken to hospital with a severely fractured neck.

No longer is it about trying to score a goal. The goal, now, is much different.

"He's pretty scared," said Lindsay Sanderson, his uncle and coach. "It's been very tough on the family. We're all running on adrenalin."

Most of the family has been camped out at Sick Children's hospital where the promising forward is being treated.

As tough as the sport can be at times, no one in lacrosse circles can recall such a severe accident occurring in a game.

Sanderson, who is unable to move most of his body, is tentatively scheduled to have surgery in the next week to stabilize his spinal column. While doctors still are determining the full extent of the injury, the family already has received a huge outpouring of support.

The Northmen held it together on that Saturday to win their game over Kitchener, but they lost in the gold-medal game the following day to Whitby.

"The (final) was very emotional and one of the toughest things we had to do," Lindsay said, as his voice cracked.

Lindsay's own 15-year-old son, Nathan, is also on the team, while Dustin's dad, Phil, is an assistant coach.

"Lacrosse is in our blood," Lindsay said. "Dustin has been living the life all his cousins and brothers did."

As one prominent player said recently: "If you know lacrosse you know the Sandersons."

Just take a look around the National Lacrosse League and the Orangeville family's fingerprints are all over it.

Four Sandersons played in the NLL this year: Dustin's brother, Chris, was with the Philadelphia Wings, while his other brother, Ryan, and cousins, Phil and Josh, were with the Albany Attack. Most of them also play in the Ontario Lacrosse Association summer league.

Dustin's uncle, Terry -- who's so popular in Orangeville readers of the town's paper named him its athlete of the century -- coached Albany and is taking over the new Montreal Xpress.

"It has been a hellish couple of days," Terry said. "Dustin's the ultimate team player. He's the type of kid everyone would want on his team."

When Chris Sanderson won the NLL championship with the Wings against the Toronto Rock at the Air Canada Centre in April, Dustin was one of the first people he phoned from the dressing room.

"We're very close. Our whole family is close," Chris, 27, said yesterday at the hospital. "He's a driven kid."

With designs of continuing the family's lacrosse success, Dustin was hoping to land an athletic scholarship upon graduation. The past two years, he has excelled in the classroom and on the field at Suffield Academy, a private school in Connecticut.

"That was the path he was hoping to take," Chris said. "He was playing really well there."

Dustin Sanderson has a new path. A path full of heart and courage.

Message to the senior field commissioner

by (Login dawgbone98)

The Season is a month away, yet there is no information as to what is going on with the season. The league went from 4 teams in 1999 to 7 teams in 2000 and there is growing interest from places like Orangeville and Ottawa for new teams. This is a very competetive and fun league. The only winless team last year was Newmarket, but they showed tremendous improvement from when we played them the first time (18-5) to the B semifinals (9-6). This is not a league where it is one team dominating. This is a very important league. I do not have the time during the summer to give back to the game anymore (at least not right now), but at least I can help in the fall. Any information as to a general meeting for field lacrosse would be great. There are many avenues to make this public. When Ed Comeau (who runs the Hamilton team) does not know ANHYTHING, you know there is a problem. Players who have played in this league love it, and there have been some very good players who play here. Please, let us not run one of the most fun and competetive leagues in Ontario.
