I'm not a big fan of hardened seats either

I've heard too many stories of seats coming out and causing damage. I've also heard of cracking around the seat, due to removal of too much metal. The seat does nothing to strengthen the head, it just provides a hard seat for the valve to slam into. Problem is, unless that seat is really installed right, it is also slamming into the head and prone to working loose.
