CHRIS CRAFT COMMANDER FORUM ® .......A photo-intensive technical reference file and ongoing newsletter regarding the original fiberglass Chris Craft Commander. Our mission at this independent not-for-profit non-commercial web site is to "have fun and share information" for your individual personal use. Our main reference feature is the ever expanding MASTER INDEX Files which contain exhaustive photo and technical information on the Chris Craft Commander line (like these original brochure scans, featuring the iconic 38 Commander designed by Fred Hudson) , (an awesome collection of Chris Craft 427 tuning and specification information), and a few words about how to use the information in the forum, etc. Be sure to look at the information about the 2009 Lake Erie Chris Craft Commander / Roamer Rendezvous, second year in a row at Huron, Ohio, held in August of 2009 !! If you're a Commander fan, this will be an event you won't want to miss next time around.

We extend to you a cordial "WELCOME ABOARD !"

Here's a secret on "q" motors and timing

Response to Yes, no, maybe

A common misnomer on the Q motors (and other flywheel forward small blocks) is that the position of #1 cylinder is "backwards" to the naked eye. This is a chris craft deal. Remember ( and this is IMPORTANT) Standing at the Back of the engine room ( next to the transmissions)looking forward #1 cylinder on both engines is the farthest forward cylinder ( farthest from you) on the left hand side. It is the normal placement for a SBC, but remember they are in backwards, and that matters

I say this to make sure your timing light is in the right place on the engine. ( not to mention your firing order and placement is correct) Another fact. There is TWo timing marks on each flywheel. One has a L and one has a R. Both marks are an indented period. ( Looks like someone took a drill and began drilling and quit.) Remember that specs call for the timing to be checked at 500 RPM. as the distributor advances very soon after that. The easiest way to achieve 500 is in gear.

Hope this helps! As it plagued me for weeks until someone showed me!
