The rebuild update (kinda long)

Response to 350Q rebuild questions

I have decided to consider this a restoration project rather then trying to hurry and get on the water. To keep my sanity and pocketbook in check!!

So here’s my update of the past couple weeks. Had a storm that ripped up my bimini (mo money) but got her out and ran her for a good three hours Sunday slow, fast and medium. Ran like a top. The oil still looked like honey at the end of the run. It is so cool looking that I just sit and look at it. Looks like someone dropped a new engine in there. Still want to rebuild and tune the carb. But that will probably have to wait till winter. That will give me a good start reading up on the book by Emanuel on Carter carbs. (Thanks for the link)

Still have temp gauge gremlins to chase down. But shot it with laser thermo and hottest thing was the risers at 170 with a 160 thermostat. Also want to confirm oil pressure (40 psi) with oil pressure test gauge. Also want to do a vacuum check on the engine. For my own piece of mind. Little mad at the reman log manifolds, they have bumps on top so I can’t remount my Chrissy engine tags in original spot.

By the way where are the ports on the intake to check vacuum pressure? I don’t see anything obivious. Also what port on fuel pump to check fuel pressure?

Coming back in to marina was another issue. Cruising along and making a critical turn suddenly the boat is not turning. Starboard engine stalled. Close call even at idle speed! Got her in with some friendly dock help. After some testing, she fires up cold, but once hot it stalls out at idle and will not restart without high RPMs. Right now I suspect fuel filters. Now that I’ve had time to look at this starboard one it looks pitiful, like it’s been sitting in a barn. Even though I’ve not had trouble with it before. Now that I am getting used to being in the engine room, I also noticed several things about it that worry me.

Choke heater stove tube is missing. (Is this needed here?)
There is a rubber tube that hangs to nowhere that connects to a nipple on the lower part of the fuel pump. (What would that be for?) you can just make it out in the pic above, it is hanging over the thermo to riser hose.
Carb looks different although it is a Carter.
Distributor is different, but it is a Mallory.
Gas line from filter to pump and pump to carb is rubber. Should be copper right?

Also having water pressure issues. I know the storage tank is near empty, but the fill tube starts overflowing almost immediately and I pulled discharge hose and not getting much coming out there. Checked the vent but seemed ok. So this weekend I am going to pull the tank and change out fittings and flush it out good. It’s an old galvanized? Drum tank 50 gals. I think. I’ll see how it looks, may go with a new one.

Have a great 4th everyone. I finally get some time to stay on a project. This having to work for a living job stuff gets in my boating way too much.

Thanks for the great site Paul!

Bill
