Water pump cam question

This is the first time I have ever heard about the "cam" in a water pump. I have replaced impellers but didn't know there were other parts that were subject to wear. I imagine my cams are pretty well worn and I plan to order some for the springtime refit, along with new impellers. Just a question about replacing the cam. From studying the photos, it appears you can take a screwdriver and just wedge the cam out. Is this the case? If there is anything special about replacing the cam, please advise.
