CHRIS CRAFT COMMANDER FORUM ® .......A photo-intensive technical reference file and ongoing newsletter regarding the original fiberglass Chris Craft Commander. Our mission at this independent not-for-profit non-commercial web site is to "have fun and share information" for your individual personal use. Our main reference feature is the ever expanding MASTER INDEX Files which contain exhaustive photo and technical information on the Chris Craft Commander line (like these original brochure scans, featuring the iconic 38 Commander designed by Fred Hudson) , (an awesome collection of Chris Craft 427 tuning and specification information), and a few words about how to use the information in the forum, etc. Be sure to look at the information about the 2009 Lake Erie Chris Craft Commander / Roamer Rendezvous, second year in a row at Huron, Ohio, held in August of 2009 !! If you're a Commander fan, this will be an event you won't want to miss next time around.

We extend to you a cordial "WELCOME ABOARD !"

cutlass bearing removal

Response to more progress

I made a tool to remove the cutlass bearings, this should be a photo. The arbor press idea was just wishful thinking. I had read about people replacing these with the boat in the water and I don't see how that would work. I had to use a torch and a big wrench and pull hard.

I also removed the stuffing boxes, following should be a photo of the old one and it's intended replacement.

I also removed the old couplings from the shafts, just to have the bare shafts for engine alignment and to see what length I need. This boat came with 1 3/8" shafts (427 stock) the 350 ci boats used a 1 1/4" shaft.
Here's the coupling photo.

I also removed the railing from the parts boat with pulpit and related hardware. I cleaned it up and oiled it with teak oil. Here's it's picture.

The bad part is the rail stantions. They look pretty bad, I hate to put them back on the boat, but rechroming takes so much time, costs a bunch and I want this project to move on, it's been dragging on too long. I checked on powder coating (the powder coat people advised against it) I just might bead blast them and paint 'em silver. I checked on getting new ones - not available. When they last were, they were $200 apiece, I need about a dozen. Here's what I'm dealing with on this.

There's still lots to do. I will post more info a little later. Paul really has a good forum for sharing and learning boat information. Thanks Paul.

Mike
