Normally the resistor is attached to the clamp holding the coil in place, as Bruce Martin has done (in chrome) with his fabulous 427 rebuild below.
The Pertronix system requires the resistor to stay, see this link for details.

On the Edelbrock I would follow the directions to switched power. Hooking to the coil scares me, and the Edelbrock installation manual has the following words: "
(negative terminal(-) on electric choke) black wire to ground, (positive terminal red wire (+) to ignition key activated 12V source; NOT coil or ALTERNATOR ! ".
I have not installed my Edelbrock on the speedboat project yet, but I guess the positive side of the ignition circuit going to the starter motor would be a thought. This would only activate the choke momentarily, and I don't fully understand the operation of the Edelbrock yet. Don't hook to the coil though.
