My chris crafts mechanicals (AFBs) are pretty much wide open. They may partly close under about 50 degrees. As Paul said, I give mine 2-3 pumps, then the engines start right up like they were fuel injected. I leave the idle at 800rmps for 5 minutes, then no problems. But then again, most of my boating is during 90 degree weather.
The electric choke holleys on my supercharged sprot boat engines were more problem than a help. The SC surging made them run a bit rich at idle and after a breif cool down the chokes would re-engage even when they were not needed. Result, fouled plugs, so I disabled them.
My 68 corvette has a big cam and had an electric choke holley. Again, rich running with the big cam made restarts after short cool downs very rich. Even that on is removed.
I use the same starting procedure on all of them with no problems.
