This pump I took apart for the photo documentation is a "spare part" I got when I acquired a pair of engines several years ago. Since it is a spare, it was likely popped open to check condition, and the gasket may have been removed at that time. It looks like a light weight "paper type" gasket was used.
Gaskets are required at every other place where two pieces of metal are put together when they are intended to contain water or oil. In some casees it may be easier to get some gasket material and make your own, rather than hunt for one elsewhere. I would think sources like Robert Henkel would have these gaskets.
