CHRIS CRAFT COMMANDER FORUM ® .......A photo-intensive technical reference file and ongoing newsletter regarding the original fiberglass Chris-Craft Commander series. This is an independent not-for-profit and non-commercial web site, not affiliated with the Chris Craft Commander Club ~~ or ~~ Chris-Craft Corporation. Our mission here is to "have fun and share information" about the Commander series (and those associated fiberglass boats on the Chris-Craft family tree) for your individual personal use, and by doing so help promote the good name of Chris-Craft, and help preserve, restore, and appreciate Chris-Craft boats. The main reference feature is the ever expanding MASTER INDEX File which contains what we believe to be the world's largest collection of documentation photos and technical information on the Chris-Craft Commander line of boats, (like these original brochure scans, featuring the iconic first 38 Commander styled by Fred Hudson, and many of the great Dick Avery renditions that followed) , (a huge collection of Chris-Craft 427 tuning and specification information), and a few words about how to use the forum.

We extend to you a cordial "WELCOME ABOARD !" Come on in, make yourself at home, we are a friendly group of enthusiasts, and we also appreciate the classic Chris Craft Roamer, Corsair, and Lancer boats too , as they are all on the same family tree and share much in common !

Response to dont fry

My Pertronix setup is as shown in the photos I posted on the Pertronix installation thread. http://www.network54.com/Forum/424840/message/1131313926/

Looking back at those photos, it's apparant I popped the unit in to see how it would run, before properly cleaning everything. You'll note the rotor is also pretty bad too. I'm planning on ordering another one just to have it aboard, by the way. I see they warrant the units for 30-months, but in reality with the use we see in boats they may last ten years or so.

Sorry you're having the issues. I posted the comment about "beware about what you hear about Pertronix", simply because they make so many models for so many different applications. What we may hear about Pertronix on a Jeep off-road forum may not apply to the motors we're running. I mention that because I read some positively bad information on one of those forums. What may have been specified for my IGNITOR may not be appropriate for the new IGNITOR-II. Take a look at my photos, you may be able to get a positive ID on the module, I would think you have the IGNITOR, rather than the newer IGNITOR-II (which has a LOT more fire to it!! Hmmmm??)

Here are some specs (you can find more at http://pertronix.com )

Pertronix IGNITOR
A solid-state electronic system... "never change points again!"
Test results show the Ignitor delivers twice the voltage to the spark plugs, increasing horsepower, fuel economy and plug life.
A 2:1 improvement over point type systems in current fall time for increased coil output.
System is designed for use with most point-type coils, optimal performance achieved when used with our Flame-Thrower 40,000 volt coil.
Rotating cobalt magnets, mounted on the distributor shaft, trigger an electronic switching module (Hall effect integrated circuit)
...no points to burn, pit and corrode
...no moving and rubbing parts to wear out.
Electronics are molded in epoxy, eliminating deterioration from dirt, oil, grease or moisture (better foul weather performance).
Fits entirely inside the distributor, no "black box" to clutter your engine compartment. Stable timing... no need for any adjustments.
No complicated wiring makes installations easy. Compatible with 12-volt negative ground systems (some applications available for 6-V negative ground and 6 and 12-V positive ground systems)
Works great in stock point-type distributors as a trigger for multi spark CD ignitions, eliminating the need for expensive aftermarket distributors.
California Resources Board E.O. #D-57-2, legal in all 50 states and Canada.
Guaranteed for 30 months, We Stand Behind It!

Pertronix IGNITOR - II
PerTronix’s lineup of electronic ignition products grows again with the introduction of the Ignitor II for most automotive, marine, industrial and agricultural applications.

The Ignitor II uses a powerful micro controller with adaptive dwell algorithms resulting in the following features and benefits:·

The Ignitor II senses current levels in the coil and adjusts the dwell to maintain peak energy throughout the entire RPM range. Dwell time is increased or decreased with changing engine RPM and operating conditions. This provides more energy at high RPM reducing misfires while improving engine performance.
Compared to point type systems, develops on average 4 times more available energy between 3000 and 5000 RPM and 2 times more available plug voltage.
Compared to the original Ignitor develops an average 3 times more available energy between 3000 and 5000 RPM and nearly doubles available plug voltage.
Higher RPM performance is improved when used with new Flame-Thrower II super low resistance (0.6 ohms) 45,000 volt coil, however, is compatible with any induction coil.
Because peak current level is reached just prior to spark, ignition energy is sustained with less heat build-up increasing coil and module life.
Adjusts spark timing over the entire RPM range to compensate for the inherent electronic delay resulting in more stable timing.
Senses engine startup and increases dwell time providing more energy for starting sparks.
Senses incorrectly wired Ignitor II or a “key left on” condition and shuts down the system protecting the coil and other components from damage.
Shares all the same form features as the Ignitor i.e. electronics molded in epoxy for better foul weather performance, no moving or rubbing parts to wear out, fits entirely inside the distributor, no “black box” to clutter your engine compartment, no complicated wiring makes installation easy, compatible with 12-volt negative ground systems and comes with a 30 month warranty.
