Your point is well taken, and there always seems to be an exception to the rule. The 283H early flywheel forward V8 series had the typical distributor location running the tach cable, with the distributor running off the transmission case. I am not sure why CC thought they had to do that, other than the normal GM location would have made the motor a lot taller for those low motor boxes they wanted.
Those are sweet running little motors. I have a good friend with one in a 1960ish CC Ski Boat, and it has plenty of power for that hull. Somewhere I think I recall seeing the number of sixty million small block Chevy motors built over the years. They are the obvious choice for any non big block installation these days.
