I have changed mine every two years. So Far ha! But last year I felt the belt was a bit loose, so tightened it up. Well I guess it was to much for the old ceramic..? bearing on the inside and it went kabooluy. Found most of the broken parts just under the thermo but also back on the inlet side of the pump. New bearing and impeller about 25 a piece and good to go.
As old as most of our bearings may be, may be good to change them. Simple and fairly cheap to replace. My shaft was amazingly loose in the old bearing, I am sure snugging the pump up cocked the impeller over enough to destroy it. I can't believe that it lasted that long before tightening.
