PHOTO OF THE DAY EDITORIAL:
Something we do not see here in the US, because there are none to our knowledge in North America. This is a 1976 Chris-Craft 28 Super Catalina, located in Switzerland, owned by Markus Zaugg. The boat is obviously akin to the fiberglass 28 Catalina built in the US during model years 1970-1973, but has very obvious differences once you begin to look more closely. The cabin roof is raised a bit, the front windshield design is different, the frontal portion of cabin side panels touch-down in a different manner, but the family resemblance is still very strong. Markus runs the boat on a freshwater lake in Switzerland; it is fast enough to ski behind. Unlike some models built in Fiumicino that were adaptations from the model initially introduced in the United States that received diesel power for the European market, this one is equipped with gas marine Chris Craft motors that were shipped to Italy for installation. These are very interesting days for Chris Craft where it was more economical to build the hull in Italy than to have it shipped from the US. In similar manner, Herb Pocklington built a 37 foot version of the Chris Craft Corvette in Italy, modeled after the wood 36 foot version introduced in the US, and that boat was specifically styled for the Italian market and equipped with diesels. This Super Catalina shows evidence of a similar styling treatment that Herb had Dick Avery give the Corvette. It is a real head-turner, great job Markus!
