I keep a can of the dielectric silicone grease in the shop for working on cars and boats, and that's what I use for the impellers when I have it handy. I like it because it's going to remain slippery for a long time after the impeller goes in. The soap works just fine too, but may not have quite the "dry start" protection the silicone has. I don't think you can go too far wrone either way.
