A bit of clarification. Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. was based at Peshtigo, WI. They had a branch factory at Cortland, NY. The Cortland operation was spun off as its own independent corporation on 01 January 1959 as Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. From that point forward, Cortland competed against its former parent. But prior to that date, it was just a branch factory of the main Wisconsin plant.
I think Volvo Penta came out with the stern drive before Eaton and Interceptor. Volvo unvieled the stern drive at the New York Boat Show in January 1959. It was developed in complete secrecy by Charlie Strang who was then employed by Kiekhaefer Corp., maker of Mercury outboard motors. he did this without the knowledge of his employer. Thompson Boat at Peshtigo was installing the 80 HP Volvo Penta stern drive in their 17 ft. Sea Lancer and 19 ft. Off-Shore models already in the summer of 1959. Cortland lagged behind by a good year or more in embracing the stern drive.
