In case you 327 guys felt you were being left out, here are some specs for reference for you too. We all have this stuff in our files at home, but I think it's pretty neat to be able to refer to it on the net too. Since this is obscure stuff very few people are interested in, the only place you'll find it on the net is here. Put it to good use in good health!

327Q Specs Needed (Help !)

December 3 2006, 8:13 PM

Good Afternoon,

I purchased a boathouse and it came with a 30' 1948 chris Crat (not sure what the model is). It has a flybridge. I only wanted the house and not the boat, so I have to get it running to sell it. I believe it has been re-powered with a 327Q(as printed on valve covers). I'm familiar with the SBC engine, but I've been told this has a different firing order than a car engine and different cylinder designation(position). I tried to put an inductive timing light on it, but when I see the mark, the engine runs like it's way retarded. Is there somewhere I can get all the engine tune-up specs. Looks like a Mallory distributor, but I see no tag.

Any info would help imensely.

Thanks....Rick

Heres a start

Check out the master index files, there is a lot of stuff for the Q motors there. Here is one such piece of info. There are a couple guys here working on the Q motors now, if you can get their attention I am sure you can get any kind of assistance you'll need.

Roy

Hello Rick, the Q motors have a lot of special tuning requirements

December 4 2006, 12:13 AM

You are right, the Q motors have different timing requirements from any other SBC. Don't ask why, we don't know, lol.

Your post is on a thread about the "F" motor, which is different than the Q. Roy posted the proper image for the Q, and you'll see it is different from the F (thanks Roy).

Stranger things have happened than having an automotive guy try to make one run with conventional SBC timing and wiring. The Q motor is a great series. I have access to all the info, some of it is on board a family member's boat. Most of what you will need is already here on the forum.

This would be your first hunting ground for info

To save you some time hunting, here is a link from Forum 350Q expert, Mark Weller (it's the entire manual in PDF form) (thanks Mark)

As you work through your issues, please feel free to ask any questions, etc., and we'll help you any way we can.

Thanks

Hi Paul, It's hard getting out of the "automotive way", since I've been at that for so long. One more question...since the boat is a single screw, I believe the motor is a right hand rotator. Looking at the sheet Roy sent me, If I was looking at that motor from the front, the flywheel would be turning CCW as indicated on the diagram...correct? Is the a site that has old pictures of the different modelsC built?

Thanks again,

Rick

283 vs 327Q

June 28 2007, 12:41 PM

i read your info on Q valve lash and i'm confused about whether 283 has solid or hydraulic lifters and how the adjustment process differs?

Valve adjustment procedures

June 28 2007, 12:52 PM

Hello Victor,

The early SBC motors were all solid lifter designs. The 283 and 327F manual indicates valves are to be checked every 100 hours of operation, and clearance adjustments should be made when the engine is hot, with the intake at .008 and exhaust at .018

The way I check valve clearance is to run the engine hot and check them while the motor is running. Naturally, if you are unable to start and run the motor you will have to rotate it by hand and check clearances when the lifter is on the heel portion of the cam.

My method of checking while hot can be found here, it's the same prodecure for the solid lifter 427 big block or the solid lifter small blocks.

Recent photo of a 327Q

For all you 327Q fans out there, here's a nice one that has around 900 hours, and it runs like a champ with the Pertronix ignition system. Yes, that is your forum host checking the packing and the hub (the latter was loose and has to be replaced due to a wallowed out keyway).
