July 5 2006 at 2:11 PM
From Sonja and Olver, in Spain  (no login)

We found yesterday (50 km in the north from Peņiscola - in the EBRO- Delta) a Restaurant in the middle of the sea - you can arrive it only with the boat! Is's so nice, and I am shure you like to see it! The very best PAELLA !!

PHOTO OF THE DAY AWARD
"The photo above showing off the beautifully prepared meal was featured as a previous "Photo of the Day" based upon it's composition, clarity, color, relevance to the discussion at hand, and overall photographic artistry. Nice job, Sonja!

July 5 2006, 2:26 PM

Hi Sonja! Great photos, I guess the power of suggestion will send Janet and me to a restaurant tonight in search of that wonderful food plate. That's awesome!

I see Oliver here! (gray shirt) Give him my regards

For the new visitors to the forum, Oliver and Sonja Oelgart are listed on the front page of this forum, with links to their site and significant threads here on the forum. Notably, they are the couple who discovered the Chris Craft 41 Commander in a German warehouse with only 12 hours on the hourmeter, after 23 years of storage. They are not notorious for cruising the Medeterranean Sea off the coast of Spain (out of Peniscola) and seeking out the most beautiful waters, coastline, islands, and of course restaurants too!

Some people sure have all the fun!

The photos tell the story.

I am quite impressed with the Olegart's seamanship, being able to navigate these waters that are obviously with lots of underwater obstructions and shallows. Nice job Oliver and Sonja!

Sonja at the helm!

A toast from Spain, aboard a 41 Commander!

Two happy restauranteers, and happy Chris Craft Commander boaters, "somewhere" near Peniscola, Spain. As I said earlier, the photos say it all. Smiles like these indicate how much fun this lovely couple is having together, and how much they enjoy their Commander.

America's Cup Race Trials, Valencia

July 5 2006, 3:24 PM

In just a few days, the 32nd America’s Cup Race will be held in Valencia, Spain, and sea trials are under way now.

Perhaps LEGENDE will be there?

I will be looking for a 41 Chris Craft all during the race coverage!

George

Didn't know about that schedule

July 5 2006, 6:21 PM

One of the thrills of a lifetime, was aboard AMERICAN EAGLE outside Newport, Rhode Island. Janet was at the helm, I was running a winch, and we blew by a local regatta like they were standing still. We were running with Weatherly and Intrepid that day, two other classic America's cup boats, now 40 years old and no longer competitive in the Cup sense, but still VERY FAST by just about any other standard. It sure was fun running together.

http://www.americascupcharters.com/2us21.htm

I hope they will have local TV coverage here in the US so we can watch the action. Perhaps we'll see LEGENDE as a spectator boat?

Regards, Paul

American Eagle

October 3 2006, 2:00 PM

Paul,
So funny. One of my good friends, George Isdale, was one of the original crew on American Eagle during the trials back in the 1960's. He has some great photos from back then. I towed (with my crew boat work boat not Bonaventure) Couragous from New Jersey to Mamaroneck,NY and then sailed it to Boston from Mamaroneck. Nice trip.

George

Hi George, just noticed your note about American Eagle. Yes indeed, those are some beautiful boats and great fun too. I proudly wear my red American Eagle team shirt on special occasions. Now what I guess we need is a photo of a Commander towing an Americas Cup racer!

As a matter of fact, a Chris-Craft Commander 45 Tournament Fisherman was the tender for the America's Cup boat Courageous.

I was there

October 6 2006, 10:02 AM

Wow,
I remember "Escort". I was up there in Newport for some of the AC races back in 1974. I did not realize Escort was a Chris Craft. I have some pictures of Couragous with Ted Turner at the helm. I should scan a couple and send them in. I will take a look for them this weekend. I also have some pictures of Bonaventure towing rather large (60+ foot) Tri hulls that finished a trans Atlantic race off of the Intrepid Air craft carrier museum in the Hudson river in NY. About 5 boats needed to be towed to the South Street seaport in the East River (other side of Manhatten)That was a sweet job. A nice day on the water and enough cash to pay for winter storage for the year. I hope I can find the pictures.
Regards,
George

YOU have to come there, it's sooo beautyful!

I had to look up the recipie after seeing that dish, and now I want some!
http://www.batista.org/paella.html

I called our favorite restarurant in Huntsville, they don't serve it but they're willing to give it a try!

Some people do have all the fun! I'll bet that 41 Commander gets the looks no matter whether it's in a fancy yacht club or at a remote island. Great photos, thanks for posting them!

I love seeing these photos from Spain

July 6 2006, 1:04 PM

Every time I see another thread from Spain it makes me want to visit the area. The water and scenery are so beautiful. The harbors, marinas and clubs along the Spanish Riviera undoubtedly see people from all over Europe, and all over the world! What a wonderful place, thanks so much Sonja and Oliver for sharing all of these photos.

Hey thanks for that phone number!

July 7 2006, 11:05 PM

Not sure when I'll be able to use it, but it's on file!

Looking over the menu, it's almost motivation enough to make the trip. Janet and I love finding special places, and there are lots of special places hidden all over the USA. After seeing the photos of Spain, I would have to say that would be my first choice of an overseas travel destination. It's a beautiful place and we (all) thank you and Oliver for being so generous with your photos. Thanks for sharing Spain with us. Have an enjoyable and safe trip aboard LEGENDE!

Regards, Paul and Janet Pletcher, and the whole USA Commander gang!

Sonja and Oliver,

What a wonderful place, and wonderful thing to share these photos! Someone said on a previous thread that your photos are like a promotional brochure for Spain! I don't imagine you see too many other Chris Craft Commanders in the Med? Hope you have a safe and very happy cruise, God be with you!

Translation in english > Restaurant Xiringuito La Costa <

October 3 2006, 10:59 AM

Hola @ all,

now my little article is published in the German/English newspaper "Los Caminos" and now I can finally introduce the ENGLISH text for you...

HERE:

Excursion suggestion: Xiringuito La Costa

We would like to introduce an especially beautiful and exceptional excursion destination!

Were talking about a typical Spanish CHIRINGUITO (English. = Beach bar) is also spelt Xiringuito. The spelling with an X comes from Catalonia. Unfortunately there are not as many Chiringuitos along our coastline as on, for example, the Balerean islands, where they can be found on every beach and in nearly all bays. This makes the Xiringuito here on the Costa Daurada much more authentic and original; a visit to the one here is an unforgettable experience with a slightly adventurous factor! It starts off with the fact that one cannot reach it in a car or by walking there because it lies right in the middle of the Ebro Delta bay which is situated in the south. It's right in the middle of the water and built on stilts. One could say "Pile Dwelling". It's just about opposite St. Carles de la Rapitá, from the restaurant it is possible to see the harbour.

Locals and boat owner have known of the Xirinquito „La Costa" existence for over 50 years, because it's delightful to anchor in the protected bay which is surrounded by the Ebro Deltas nature preserve. Many families gather here in the summer in their motor boots and yachts and enjoy the peace and quite and let their souls „dangle", swim, or paddle with their dinghies to the nearly Xiringuito „La Costa" situated in the middie of the water for lunch.

One thing should be quite clear, one must book a table before hand, if a table has not been booked in advance then it is more or less impossible to get a table. Don't even try; you will probably have to stay on your boat hungry with the lovely smell of Paella passing in front of your nose and your mouth drooling at the thought of having a plateful yourself.

Larger ships are not able to dock at the piers available because the water around the restaurant is between 0,30 m and 2,50 m deep. It's no problem if you don't have your own dinghy, the founder of the Xiringuito "La Costa", Alejandro Samver Torta, will come personally with his Taxi boat and pick you up, a phone call is enough!

The location is sensational, and one is very impressed on arriving there. A large number of staff is available to take care of your needs; they are always very nice, patient and friendly, even when it is very full.

The Xiringuito "La Costa" is renowned for its marvellous Paella, therefore being not only popular amongst Spaniards. The rice for the Paella comes from where other than the rice producing region of the Ebro Delta. We have tested the Paella many times (enjoyed would be the better way of saying it) and it really does taste fantastic! Apart from fish and mussel specialities, the menu also offers various meat dishes and salads as well as homemade desserts.

One sits pretty rustically on wooden benches at huge tables, and it doesn't bother anyone if kids park themselves nearby together with their small buckets containing fish that they have caught. Just like all over Spain, it's not that quiet, this is compensated by the wonderful view of the Ebro Delta with all the yachts lying at anchor and the mountains in the background. It's such a nice atmosphere that during the first visit one already knows that it won't be long before the second visit is planned. Those who prefer cushioned seating should bring a cushion along with them from home, we don't miss them but one shouldn't compare it with a typical normal restaurant, because one also sits here in the obvious bathing clothing, which doesn't disturb anyone at all.

The founder of the Xiringuito, Alejandro Samver Torta , who opened the Restaurant 50 years ago can still be met there. Sometimes he is seen running around with tools making quick repairs, or as already mentioned, he is personally picking guests up from their ships with is Taxi Boat after being phoned up. Sometimes he personally welcomes guests who arrive in their own dinghies. The cooking and serving of guests is left to the younger staff, but now and again he visits a table and tells the odd story.

The new owner Andres Carbo Lavafons took over the Xiringuito a few years ago and enlarged, whereby the "work rooms" were not allowed to be enlarged. Working conditions during the summer heat are more than troublesome in the kitchen, one must have great admiration for the performances of the kitchen staff. The kitchen is always open and can always be viewed. It's amazing how everyone always manages to organise things and at the same time remain cheerful.

Via numerous bridge connections it is possible to get to various small wooden houses. The toilets are in one of them, in another the electricity generator which runs 24 hours a day, but cannot be heard in the restaurant. A further hut with an open shutter is "only" used for washing up the dishes etc.

For those who would like to take a quick Siesta there are sun-loungers around the corner. Via a further bridge with wooden steps one is able to get down to the water and paddle over (with the use of bathing shoes, recommended because of the Sea Urchins) to the nearby shore for a walk.

The Xiringuito opens each year in the middle of June and is open depending on the weather until the end of September. The daily opening hours are from 10:00 hrs until 18:00 hrs and in August also on Saturday evenings from 21:00 hrs until 23:00 hrs.

Next year in 2007, it will be open in August during the evening on a daily basis. Because a table has to be booked anyway, it is better to ask about the opening times once again.

Table bookings in Spanish, 3-4 days in advance, can be made. under the
Telephone number: 616 635 541.

For all of those who are sad because they don't own a boat, we will tell you now, there is a small catamaran, a „Golondrina", in the St. Clarles de la Rapitá harbour that, on a daily basis during the Xiringuito "La Costa" opening hours, take you across in summer in the morning at 11:00 hrs and naturally pick you up again.

All in all a wonderful day trip which is well worth it and will never be forgotten by you; your family or your friends.

Text and Photos: Sonja Oelgart (published also in www.los-caminos.com)

The Restaurant is closed now till the next year, in June and we have to fish our ouwn dinner like last sunday :

Good to hear from you, thanks for sharing the nice article. Very interesting, especially since we know you routinely visit this location aboard LEGENDE, the Commander Flagship of the Mediterranean. For a minute, I though Oliver got a job catching fish for the restaurant. Smoked fish, making me hungry!

Me being a relative newbie, have not had the time to read everything on this forum, but this one reads like a world vacation tour set up by a travel agency. The photographs are spectacular, and the South of Spain is even more so.

Thank you Sonia for sharing these wonderful photographs with us.
