CHRIS CRAFT COMMANDER FORUM ® .......A photo-intensive technical reference file and ongoing newsletter regarding the original fiberglass Chris-Craft Commander series. This is an independent not-for-profit and non-commercial web site, not affiliated with the Chris Craft Commander Club ~~ or ~~ Chris-Craft Corporation. Our mission here is to "have fun and share information" about the Commander series (and those associated fiberglass boats on the Chris-Craft family tree) for your individual personal use, and by doing so help promote the good name of Chris-Craft, and help preserve, restore, and appreciate Chris-Craft boats. The main reference feature is the ever expanding MASTER INDEX File which contains what we believe to be the world's largest collection of documentation photos and technical information on the Chris-Craft Commander line of boats, (like these original brochure scans, featuring the iconic first 38 Commander styled by Fred Hudson, and many of the great Dick Avery renditions that followed) , (a huge collection of Chris-Craft 427 tuning and specification information), and a few words about how to use the forum.

We extend to you a cordial "WELCOME ABOARD !" Come on in, make yourself at home, we are a friendly group of enthusiasts, and we also appreciate the classic Chris Craft Roamer, Corsair, and Lancer boats too , as they are all on the same family tree and share much in common !

Dave Krugler, got a coil question for you

Are you running a ballast resistor on your Skiff? Don't have one on mine?

Looks like I have an old Prestolite 200691

Just spent an enjoyable few hours working on my distributor, wrestling with some replacement parts that "almost" fit. More on that later. PS...I hate autocorrect! happy.gif

No ballast resistor

Hi Paul; Sorry I'm so slow to respond but no, I am not running a ballast resistor. There is none shown on the Chris Craft wiring diagram either. For sure we need to be aware of this when selecting a replacement coil to make sure the one we pick has a primary winding capable of handling up to 13.8vdc which is pretty typical WOT alternator output.

Hi Dave. Thanks for the note. Got a chance to nose around a bit and found some info on that coil number, see page 3.

Probably why I had burned ignition points.

August 27 2012, 9:55 AM

Hi Dave,

The boat seems to have the original coil, or a replacement same as the original. Dumb me, I installed a spare coil next to it so I could easily swap from one to the other in the event I needed to. So the second coil had an external resistor attached but I never used it because the original coil had no resister (it had an internal resister, either by device or design of windings, etc).

Therefor running the non resisted coil seemed to perform well UNTIL things finally got chewed up. It was pretty evident my voltage was too high. Look at this, I'd say they got a little warm. happy.gif Boat ran good, however, but not for long.

Ouch- hot stuff

Wow- those do look like crispy critters Paul. The other component that comes into play is the condenser which is supposed to keep the points arcing to a minimum. Arcing relates directly to contact burning and has some affect on timing consistency.

In conjunction with the original 12v coil here is my list of expendable ignition parts and sources. I swear by Standard Motor Products Blue Streak points and condenser for our IBM 4115 distributors. The points are extra heavy duty copper clad with the copper conductor strap for the moving point and the adjustment holes work with our distributors without filing them to enlarge them.
