Hi guys
I'm in the market for a fly rod which I'd like to use for salmon and steelhead here in Michigan and as I'm pretty new to this I don't know what to buy, or should I say what not to buy.
Thought about spending about $350 on the whole thing as I won't be fishing for salmon and steelhead that much but would like good quality gear and if need be will pay a bit more.
There's a St.Croix 9ft 8wt Legend Ultra in a local shop for US$162 that usually retails anywhere else for just above 300 bucks. I figured that might not be the worst choice for that price. The rod is new but they are clearing out some of their inventory and that's why it's priced down.
I can get Sage, Scott, Mystic, some Orvis and TFO here locally but at least the first three of those will run me a little more and the reel and line still needs to be added too.
As far as reels go I'm pretty lost on what to get and so far the recommendation in any fly shop here was to spend more money on the reel for this kind of setup and less on the rod if money is a factor in this.
If any of you have any suggestions on this I'd appreciate it.
