When planning your career it is easy to just ask yourself where the money is and then pursue that type of career. While money is an important factor, it is vital to realize that is not the only factor. It is important to select a career that caters to your characteristics. Also, you want to choose something that is fun and interesting to you.

There are many ways to explore what type of career you want to pursue. One of the best ways is talking to someone who is in the career you are looking to start. You can ask them questions, such as how they got started, what type of education is required, and, last but not least, what is their salary.

After you get this information and chose the career path best for you, decide on some goals. These goals should help you attain the required education and training necessary to get a job in the field you desire. Your career is going to be a major part of your life, so make sure you put enough time and energy into the selection process.

If your career path requires college, that makes the decision even more crucial. Sure, once you get a college degree, you are not married to that profession, but it is much harder to get a job that is not in your field. Your salary will go down if you get a job that isn't related to your degree.

Normally, when selecting a major your age is 17-18 years old. It is recommended to take core classes in your first one or two semesters to get a feel for what you like and dislike. If you are interested in sociology, take the introduction to sociology course and see if you really enjoy it.

Careers that require graduate school also put the student in a tough position. Many students are tired of school and wish to take a break after the first four years are completed. Taking a break in school will bring student loans due and put them in a financial crunch.

If possible, taking a break is not always a bad decision, as long as the student does make it back and finish the graduate degree. It can give time to see what work in the field is really like. Also, it can give you time to strengthen your application for graduate school.

No matter which path you choose, remember that career planning is all about you. Remember, you are the one that plans on being in this field for the rest of your life. College is not for everyone and there is no shame in bypassing it and going straight into the professional world.

Many of the greatest entrepreneurial minds lacked a college degree. Some of them even lacked a high school degree. Remember to pick a field that you are interested in and something you can see yourself doing for the rest of your life.

If later on you decide it is not the career for you, it is not the end of the world. At this day and age, people are switching careers at a higher rate than ever.
