Match Notes

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The Alabama soccer team (2-0) will return home for a single match this week as it will host Furman (1-1) on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. Jordan Eichenblatt and Alex Butera will call the action live on TideTV.

Alabama opened its 2010 season in impressive fashion as it earned two victories over in-state opponents. The Tide claimed a 2-1 victory over Samford and then capped off the weekend with a 1-0 shutout win at UAB. The victory against the Blazers was the first ever in program history on the UAB campus. Brooke Rogers again scored a quick goal as she found the net in the seventh minute. Junior goalkeeper Justine Bernier tallied her first shutout of the season.

Alabama senior forward Brooke Rogers has gotten the Crimson Tide off to a fast start. The Cincinnati native found the back of the net in each contest to help lead Alabama to an early 2-0 record. Rogers scored the first goal of the season in just four minutes on the first Alabama shot of the year against Samford. The senior struck again in seven minutes, again on the first shot of the game for the Tide against UAB. The tally against the Blazers proved to be the game-winner and it marked the first time Alabama had ever beaten UAB on the Birmingham campus.

The Paladins enter Tuscaloosa with a 1-1 record after splitting its first two contests of the season. Furman was edged in the season opener in double overtime, 3-2 against Jacksonville. On Tuesday, Furman claimed its first victory of 2010 as it downed USC Upstate, 5-0. The Paladins finished 10-8-0 in 2009 and posted a 4-7-0 mark in SoCon play. Furman returns 12 letterwinners, including five starters. Head Coach Andrew Burr enters his sixth season at the helm and has posted a 66-37-6 record.

The match will mark just the second meeting between the programs as the series is now rekindled 16 years later. Furman downed Alabama 1-0 in Tuscaloosa in 1994 the first year Don Staley was at the helm of the Crimson Tide.

While the two teams have yet to meet under the direction of Alabama head coach Todd Bramble, the veteran coach does have an extensive history against the Furman program. While at the helm of Clemson, Bramble did face the Paladins seven times, posting a 6-0-1 record. The last meeting came in his final season at Clemson, downing Furman, 2-1 in 2007.

The Alabama soccer team is quietly playing a tough non-conference schedule in 2010. Of the seven matches played before Southeastern Conference play, five of those teams won 10 or more contests in 2009. Samford only lost one match last season while Memphis earned 16 wins. UAB, Furman, and Middle Tennessee each had over 10 wins a year ago.

Alabama junior goalkeeper Justine Bernier recorded her first shutout of the season which marks her 10th of her career. The 10th career clean sheet ties her with former Tide standout keeper Amy Pseja for third all-time in program history. Bernier helped Alabama post a 1-0 shutout at UAB on Sunday.

Alabama entered the season opener without finding the net in five straight matches dating back to the 2009 season. In the 2010 opener the Crimson Tide showed no signs of a goal-shortage as it found the net twice, including the first tally in just the first four minutes of the match. Alabama scored just 14 goals a year ago, but including the exhibition contests this season, the Tide has netted nine goals in four matches in 2010 with Brooke Rogers netting three goals over that span.

In the 2010 season opener Alabama set a new single game program record with 1,284 fans in attendance. The mark broke the old record of 1,252 fans set against Mississippi State on Oct. 3, 2008. The Alabama Soccer Stadium features a new look in 2010 as it showcases one of the largest video boards in the country and new signage and graphics throughout the complex.

The Alabama soccer team has added a friendly to its schedule as it will face the U-17 Ghana National Team on Monday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m. The Ghana team has been in the states for some matches as they have already played Mississippi State.

The soccer team is off to a great start this season and needs your support, home attendance is free to everyone. There will be a poster given away to every fan in attendance as well as an autograph session following the match to get your poster signed by your favorite player. This game is a Big Als Kids Club event and will feature an inflatable for the kids. Also dont miss out on a chance to win an iPad through The Alabama Athletic Attendance Reward Program. By attending FIVE events between Alabama Soccer and Volleyball you will receive a FREE Im a part of THE PROCESS sunglass strap, and will also be entered for a drawing to win an iPad.

Alabama will continue its one match per weekend schedule this upcoming week as it hosts Chattanooga. The Crimson Tide will meet the Lady Mocs on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Alabama Soccer Stadium.
