Quitting soccer due to eligibility or grades?

I know that we often hear that most soccer players do better academically then other college athletes.

But I wonder how often do soccer players become academically ineligible due to low grades, or quit soccer on their own in order to concentrate more on their studies or change their majors to something less rigorous than they originally planned. (I've noticed several "sports/recreation management" majors on some rosters)

I would imagine that many such transitions would happen in the freshman or sophomore year, when students are introduced to more rigorous academics coupled with 20+ hours of soccer activities/week.

Does anyone have any such experience or anectotal evidence on this?

  1. Look for names disappearing from rosters in the spring - Anonymous on Jan 5, 2011, 7:16 AM
