UGA Men's Soccer Program

January 4 2011 at 9:27 PM

i heard a rumor that uga is getting a women's lacrosse program next year and, per title IX, will finally be able to fund a division 1 men's soccer program. if this is true, it would be a great move on the university's part as i'm sure it will attract the majority of the big time recruits instate and will very likely challenge for a national championship almost immediately. Georgia would be the first of the big SEC football schools (Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, LSU, etc) to create a d-1 program and could possibly push the others to make the move too. tell me im not just dreaming!

Only two D1 schools have added men's soccer in the past decade: Michigan and East TN

What about SC?

Or I guess you don't consider them a "big football SEC school"?

You are dreaming. UGA has no intention of adding men's soccer on a varsity basis until and unless the SEC adds it as a varsity sport. It's not a matter of funding or Title IX.

Kentucky plays in Conference USA. Vandy use to have a team (not sure if they still do). They use to play Berry, Alabama A&M. Tennessee has the facilities if they decide to have a men's program.

Any school that has women's soccer has the "facilities" to have a men's team.

South Carolina has had a D1 mens progran for many years. Your post states that Georgia would be the first if they began one.

dreaming, and here's why

January 7 2011, 2:00 PM

They have the money and could add a men's team now and still be in compliance. Their last AD said this repeatedly.

But he also said this: they won't field a men's team that isn't pitted against SEC competition. They (including the President) don't think it's worth the expense to play in the minor leagues..

So if other SEC schools all step forward to field a mens team then so will UGA. Otherwise, not.
