VSU and Gulf South

How will schools in the Gulf South really compete for National attention when they play each other twice? Whose bright idea was this? Wish we would have know this before committing to the school this year and the large roster 28-30 is not what we were told it would be.

Your coach won't play Columbus, North Georgia or AASU, so what does it matter.

One can always hope. They say they want to win a National Championship and the Univeristy has put the funding in but with the way the conference is set up and the non-conf schedule I just don't see it happening.

Your problem isn't that you have to play the whole league twice...

... it's that you have to play West Florida twice.

Yes west florida is very good (and don't forget about N Alabama). however, not having more open dates for non-conf games presents a problem as the program matures and gets better. would have been nice to know during the recruiting process. it might have changed our decision. additionally the roster size appears to be much larger than we were told it would be.

Your problem is not the schedule. That's a non issue. Your problem is she has no issue recruiting over people and not being able to live up to the promises she made about the opportunity to earn playing time.

Roster Size

August 7 2012, 12:00 PM

Last year VSU had around 30 players and with most of team being freshmen, I would expect that they would be around the same number this year because they would probably lose some players from the lack of playing time, interest, etc. and then with a few new recruits the number would probably be around the same number as last year. 28-30 players sounds about right.

Most teams try to carry 28-30 players. It sounds like your daughter is going to have competition for playing time and mommy and daddy are in shock about it.

not smart enough

August 7 2012, 3:22 PM

we are not in shock, we should have been smart enough to see through the bs. we were told 22-24 players. 28 to 30 is way more and the conference schedule is a joke. playing the same teams twice in the year and then again in the conference tournament. we got took! trying to stay positive but its hard when you think the coach was not honest from the start.

The roster size is the same as last year.
As for schedule --- the out of conferance games includes some teams they played last year -- if home last year, then away this year. (Schedules are many times a 2 year commitment)
Last year VSU started with low Peachbelt team, and this year they will scrimmage a middle of the pack peachbelt team.
Gulf South plans to increase the number of teams to have a east and west division - to reduce travel time and then in the conferance tounament you will probably play teams from the other side of the conf.

I understand home and away. however, playing the same teams twice in the conference is not good for anyone. as far as adding teams, will they be non-football schools because the gulf south is a football conference first and schools are usually not added if they don't have football teams.

Rumor that she ducks Top PBC Teams

August 8 2012, 7:48 AM

Plenty of game where she could have added top level teams in the area. Chose not to. Playing out conference, Coker, Queens, Anderson Palm Beach Atlantic. With that said, playing two games against most of that league is a waste. Besides UWF and North Alabama, the league is weak. North Alabama is going DI so it is about to get weaker.

She also spins a line in recruiting. Does not tell the entire truth just enough to hook you.

Actually playing everybody home and away is a great idea and the NCAA bid should go to the regular season champion. This method will determine the best team in the conference every year preventing a run in the conference tournament. Since games are home and away the best will be determined over the course of the regular season, just like it happens everywhere.

However,

playing home and away where one counts and the other doesn't is just plain stupid...make them both count then I agree with you.
