Some years ago I won a Loomis IM6 8 1/2 foot 5wt rod in a local contest. Coupled with the Sci Angler SystemII reel and a 5wt DT line, I love this rod for some of the smaller streams I fish along Colorado's front range.

The rod packs plenty of punch to put out a 30 foot roll cast without beating your arm to death. Thirty feet is usually more than enough line plus leader on a 20 foot wide stream.

This is a "moderate action rod" meaning it loads toward the middle of the rod. It is a very smooth casting rod if I remember to allow a little more time for backcasts to straighten out.

I don't know about the newer rods but the owner of my fly shop says that some of the Loomis rods are the best out there today. And he sells mostly St. Croix for what it is worth.
