Has anyone ever bought one of these new rods. They look great with beautiful hardware but it better perform well for the price they're asking. I love Orvis fly rods but don't think I'd spend the cash on this one.
Well I could not resist new techonlogy so this spring I bought a 5 wt G2 from Scott, and a 5 Wt Zero G from Orvis and went to New Zealand for three weeks with just these two rods....I kinda rotated between the two every other day for 6 days or so...and stuck with the G2 after that, never touching the Zero G the rest of the trip.....the story continues....once back in CO, I headed to the Big Horn for five days...first day I used the G2 until noon, and never touched it after that...the Zero G became the starter....whats my point ??....they are both great rods...just different purposes...The Orvis is stiffer and a better nympher, seems to handle the rigs of the Bighorn better, and the G2 was simply perfect for the kind of delicate presentations we needed in New Zealand.
Over Thanksgiving, I spent three days on the Arkansas, with a double nymph rig of size 20's...The Zero G was my choice, and it worked great lobbing the 5 foot nymph rig on two windy days, and landing almost 20 browinies a day.... you pay your money and take your choice....I think I am going to get a 4 wt ZeroG for use next spring....dm

Zero G Rods Must Be Defective
August 25 2008, 7:14 PM
I purchased an 8 wt and a 6 wt rod about 18 months ago and both of the rods have broken at the connection just above the butt. We were also in Alaska last week, where my 8 wt and a friends 6 wt pole both broke, and the guides at the lodge where we were fishing told us that they had seen 6 other Zero G rods break in the same fashion this summer.
Even though the rods will be repaired or replaced that wouldn't do someone much good if that happened to be the only rod that someone had access to during a week in Alaska. The good news for us was that we happened to be at a lodge where they had replacement poles that we could use for the rest of the week.
Given the options that available in the market place and given that this appears to a systemic problem, I would strongly recommend that people look to something besides a Zero G.
