TiCr-X = Great Buy!!!

August 25 2005 at 3:58 PM

Those of you that read the fisherie site know that I'm a big fan of the TFO's. I own a lot of fly rods, and with only a few exceptions, not many of them are that much beter than the TiCr-x series when it comes to throwing a long line. Add to that the fact that these rods sell for between $225-$250, and I feel that these rods are among the best buys in all of fly-fishing (rods, reels, etc...) The TiCr-X series of rods are truly sticks. Fast, super dampening, they track well, and have a lot of power. They are extremely stiff, and seem best suited for repeated, long-distance casting (flats, lakes, etc...) I own both the SW 6wt, and the 8wt of these rods, and use them both a lot. The 8wt is perfect for casting in Lake Erie for chrome, and with an intermediate line and a stripping basket, can throw well into the backing with minimal effort. I also like the look of this rod quite a bit, the blanks are painted a similar shade of blue as the Sage Xi2 rods. Cork is decent (though doesn't seem to be the floral grade that they claim) good guides, no hook-keeper, which seems par for the course at this $ and for a SW rod. No rod case either, which is part of their "no-frills" approach. All in all, really one of the few bargains in rods today. I also bought their TiCr 14wt for sailfish. Landed 4 100lb.+ fish with it before it broke, though the break was due to opperator error (oops!) Great bluewater alternative if you don't want to spend the $ on a Sage or Loomis.

TCR

In comparison to the Sage TCR.
From what I understand is that TicrX is the runner up in Ultra-fast action rods. I also understand that the sage TCR is made from Generation 5 graphite which makes it lighter and more sensitive than the TicrX. Also the Cork from Sage is a higher quality that TFO's

What is your opinion on the subject? is it really worth the money to buy a TCR or stick with a TicrX?

Stick with TFO

For the money, I think TFO is the way to go. Not as pretty as Sage but just as effective and in in some cases, better.

Ticr-X outstanding value

I would not hesitate to go with a Ticr-x, I have a 5wt and a 9wt, and I love both of them. There are a lot of $200-250 rods that cast like $200-250 rods. The Ticr-X is a $225 rod that casts like a $800 rod.

They are a bit heavy on the scale, but I don't notice it much fishing. There is quite a bit of filler on the grips.

The 9wt I bought had a very slight bend in the tip when I bought it, and the guys at TFO send me a second tip section at no cost, received it within a week. The 5 wt became my favorite rod on the first cast. Wicked smooth and powerful.

If you don't care about the bit of extra weight and cosmetics, its easily the best rod I have casted.

Don't be fooled by the so called "fast action"

I am going disagree with the others. You won't beat a sage rod no matter what other country you make the TF rods in.
You get what you pay for...and that's the truth!

The Best!

Guys,

I'm from Malaysia and I should say that I'm a proud user of this brand of rods.
I still think it is a great American-inspired products, on par with Winston & Sage, eventho the rods are manufactured in our continent.

Been using this rod for the past 3 years. Never failed me in any way... :-D
I currently own a 5wt, 7wt & 9wt TiCr-X rods and have landed countless giant snakeheads, big-head carps, morocotos (pacus), catfish, mahseer, triple-tail, queenfish, bonefish, tarpon, snappers, sailfish...etc up to 150lb! And I never encounter a single problem with them rods... honest!
And the only other brand I use that never gives me creeps is Winston, a 4wt & 8wt which I love as much as them TFOs. Used to own Sage rods which fumble at the reel-seat & Redington rods who keep breaking all the time... got fed-up and traded them with TFOs.

Also have a 3wt Finesse who works angel in securing cichlids, barbels, breams & small mahseer.

Truly... this is the rod for the money, if not yours!
