but I really don't want to drive on scary mountain passes by myself! I'm guessing that I will have to drive some scary roads just to get to Ouray, right? Does anyone want to carpool?

Seriously, you can take a less scary route by going west of Durango, the way I get to Telluride and then up and around. On highway 145, Lizard Head Pass is much less scary than Red Mountain Pass.
