I would like to move to Ouray by next year, as it is the most beautiful place on earth. I would love to hear from the locals about their experience living in Ouray. How are newbies welcomed? If there was one thing you wish Ouray had that currently doesn't what would that be?

So, you think you want to move to Ouray... Well, I moved last year and for the most part, I think the town is welcoming to newbies. The outdoor beauty is second to none, the recreation is fantastic and there are many folks that enjoy it.
I feel very lucky to have stumbled to Ouray and have no intention of leaving anytime soon. One thing that is nice is that there is high speed internet... and that keeps you well connected... if you want to be... but there are ample opportunities to disconnect as well.
If you wanted to run a small business, those are always welcome. I myself think that a well run, year round breakfast/lunch place is very much in need... you know, the kind of place where they serve quality food... sitdown style...
I've spent a lot of time in that area in the last eight years jeeping and hiking so I feel in love. Considered Montrose, Ridgeway, Silverton, and Lake City but there is something about Ouray that I really like. I use to live in Glenwood Springs and miss living in the mountains.
Thank you for the information and it's great to hear from someone that just moved not too long ago. I would like to start a business there and have been brain storming ideas. If anything else comes to mind let me know. I noticed a lot of businesses for sale. Why is that?
There are a few areas where you can try to gleen some information... The Ouray Chamber Resort Association and the city itself has a Community Development Committee that may have some information for you about starting a new business in Ouray. I am not 100% sure of the contact, but, I am going to find out and get back with you.
Just my opinion, but, I think that there is some changing going on in Ouray ... most folks that are selling are in retirement ages and ready to at least get out of business. I do not think it is a reflection of the town as much as a reflection of the genetics.
But, there are many new folks that have moved here recently and folks are starting/continuing existing businesses.
Recent sales & transfers of ownership include Box Canyon Lodge, Riverside Inn, Switzerland of America, Rocky Mountain Treasures, Kristophers Cullunaire (sp?)... The town is vibrant and dynamic and we hope you enjoy it! Let me know when you get to town...
So, what are your ideas? likes? passions? as I have no clue where you are starting from, I am not sure that I can really be helpful in terms of helping you brainstorm but I understand why you may be reluctant to disclose too much...
You are right. Ouray is the most beautiful place in the world. And it shows on the people who all look out the window each morning and are so thankful to live here.
Everyone seems to be wildly busy all the time, by the time they make a living and still work in some sort of recreation available right outside the door. The pool is also a great amenity...natural hot springs without the typical odor associated with most hot springs.
I am on the Community Development Committee, had a shop until I sold it last March, and have an ongoing relationship with most of the business community. We would be happy to provide information about potential new businesses, but probably need to know some general area of interest for such.
Most of the for sale signs you saw are for buildings, not businesses, and most of those for sale are folks who have reached retirement age and are moving on to another life adventure. However, other than a couple, those building still house businesses.
There are a few, not many, rental spaces available. The appropriate space would be very dependent on the type of business and the location that needs. We are aware of a variety of types of retail and/or service sorts of businesses that we think have a good chance of being successful. We are trying hard to set up systems that will be as supportive as possible to help new biz survive and thrive.
