Hi, I was hoping someone may be able to help me with a question I have regarding making a mold of a foot. I want to make a flexible cast of a foot, so casting with plaster or anything similar is out. The question is, what would I need to use for this and the mold? Could I use a mold that would usually be used to cast plaster with foam or rubber? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi,
I’m sure you have already gotten several replies, so this might be more of the same; however, I would make the alginate/plaster cast first. Get your positive, then use silicone molding to make your flexi cast. It will be must easier to make a multi-part cast if you aren’t worrying about your models body getting in the way. I hope all goes well, and give me a shout when its done, I’m always in the market for lifecast pieces that I don’t have to cast myself. I teach an art class and the students like to draw human forms without seeing actual nude forms. (Its Utah, you’d have to live here to understand some of the crazies.)

Russ has a good idea. Or you can get the type of silicone that can be applied directly to the skin. Several of the mold material manufacturers carry it. ArtMolds has one called LifeRite, Polytek has one called PlatSil Gel-10, etc.....

You would just apply that, use plaster for a carrier (mother) mold. Then you have a flexible mold of a foot. Then you can cast pretty much anything into that.

Good luck.

Hi,
I am new here.
I came across a new ebook on mould making on ebay the other day it covers silicone moulds, latex and various types of casting including lifecasting

I have found very useful just for solving casting problems alone.

I have now purchased a lifecasting kit and I am going to have go at making my own moulds.
If anyone is interested here is the link
