Hi Guys,
Forgive me if this forum is not the right place to post something like this.
I was cleaning a house in eastern CT and found and old pot belly stove that says B&M No. 1 on the top. It's 30 inches tall. There is a number inside one of the legs, I think it was 128. It's very nice looking and seems complete. Could this be from the Boston and Maine Railroad? If it is, when and where might it have been used? I would like to know more about this.
Here is a snap of the stove

The last time I saw one of these it was in a crossing tender's shanty. Of course, they may have been used elsewhere as well.

Hi,
These stoves were used in various small buildings on the B&M RR. The B&M RR had the largest foundry in New England for a time durring the early 1900's. They cast several different sizes of Railroad style stoves for their own use. Stations had a #7? stove I think....Your #1 is the smallest. They seem to have copied another design that was already out there but I'm not sure of this. I also have a #1, and have seen several others. You will see the larger station models are also around, once you know what they look like.
Eric.

I first saw a B&M stove at the Portland Stove Foundry in Portland, Maine, which at one time could produce individual stoves from its stock of patterns. Unfortunately, Portland Stove Foundry was destroyed in a fire in the lower westside section of Portland and never rebuilt. Too bad the patterns couldn't have been saved. Or were they?
