My dad was Supt. of Operations for the B&M and passed away 25 years ago. I am wondering where I may find info about him. My whole family was involved with the B&M. My grandfather Floyd Cardwell was a train Engineer in the Wihte River Jct. area, and my older brother Brooks was an engineer for the B&M and now works for the P&W. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it.

I remember your Dad as I was hired by him in 1977, and also lived in his (at the time) hometown of Reading MA.
I can point you in the direction of those who knew him much more closely than I.
There is a picture of him in one of the B&M's employee magazines dated around 1958. He was shown seated at teh CTC remote control machine which handled Concord NH to White River Jct which was brand new at the time. I may have a duplicate copy of this magazine. If so, I'll be happy to sed it to you, if not, I can make a zerox copy.
I suggest you try to look up PRESTON JOHNSON of Melrose NH (# is listed in phone book) or contact me through e-mail (DFKyddSeDe@aol.com).
Also, I recall a story regarding your GRANDFATHER'S last run, from newport VT to WRJ, which occurred while your Dad was on duty as the Chief Train Dispatcher that day, in 1954 I believe.
Also: your brother, Brooks Jr went to school (RMHS) with my older brother.

I just wanted to add the I live in Vermont now. There is a B&M Caboose, looks great, in one of the fields very close to the road on Rte 7 just north Of Pittsford. I pass it twice a day on my way to work. One of these days I am going to stop & ask if I can look around. Also my Grandfather Cardwell's Engine "494" is on display in White River, Jct. Lots of memories..........

Pam, I attempted to e-mail you last month with some more detailed information. Apparantly your e-mail address at the time is no longer working. I wished to tell you that after October 14th, my wife and I will be living in Woodsville NH (across fom Wells River VT). Although I'll be working in Boston during the week, I'll be home on weekends. We don't yet have a phone # but our e-mail address is DFKyddSeDe@aol.com
I mentioned your question to a former B&M Train Dispatcher now living in Texas and he confirms about your dad'd picture being in the employees's magazine from the late 1950s. I will look through my library and see if I have a duplicate copy. If we don't make contact, I can send it to you and/or your brother via company mail at Worcestor.
Another thing I thought of recently was that in the eighties, they installed a crossover switch between the Northward and Southward tracks near Wilmington Mass. They named it the CARDWELL CROSSOVER, as he had something to do with the idea for putting this crossover switch in at this location.
Please feel free to contact us if you think we can be of assistance.
