Hello,
Does anyone know when the B&M Railroad tracks were removed in Keene NH? We believe it was between 1973 and 1980-something but are looking to narrow that down a little more. Thank you for any suggestions.

The Ashuelot Branch from Keene to South Vernon VT was abandoned in 1983. The Cheshire line from Winchendon, MA was abandoned in 1972, but the tracks in the Keene yard remained in place as did a line to Swanzey. The Swanzey tracks were removed in 1975. The Green Mountain Railroad abandoned the Keene yard tracks January 3, 1983, and obviously they were removed sometime later.

Had some time to poke around over the weekend. In the society newsletter for July 1984 there was a report of an article in the Keene Sentinel. The May 16, 1984 issue had a front page photo of the work train involved with removing the track in Keene.

John, this is wonderful information. We need to include the date in a grant application the City is making for the former railroad land. I appreciate your help in "tracking" this down! Vicki

What are they planning on doing with it? (Please tell me it's some sort of historic preservation/park, and not that people here helped Keene to destroy the site for a strip mall or something.)

No kiddin'. Can we assume the lack of a response means you're right?
Did someone just use this forum to help destroy the very thing we all care very much about preserving?
Who is this "Vicki Flanders" person- and what is she up to?
