I just finished remotoring a 1970 vintage Olympia / Gem Boston & Maine 4-8-2 R1d. I removed the original open framed motor and installed a NWSL 22363 Cam Motor. The whole process was actually pretty simple.
I have a question about Flywheels though. I would really like to add a brass flywheel to the front of the motor. It is my understanding that adding a flywheel will greatly help the locomotive maintain its forward momentum when it briefly looses electrical contact with the rails and thus will help eliminate the sudden stops because of dirty tracks. I tried to use a standard flywheel, but the angle of the motor to the gearbox will not allow for a standard flywheel to work. I have seen pictures of "cone" shaped brass flywheels and I really think that this is the way to go. My question is..... Where do you get these "cone" shaped brass flywheels? I checked the NWSL catalog and it doesn't appear that they sell them?
