Universal Sports to close Bethesda office

Universal Sports is getting rid of its Bethesda office as part of a nationwide consolidation of its TV and digital operations into a tech-savvy facility near Thousand Oaks, Calif.
On Monday the Olympics sports network announced its Jan. 1 move to a 40,000-square-foot production and office facility, uniting employees and offices in Bethesda, Santa Monica and Glendale, Calif. A sales staff will stay in New York.
The Bethesda office, which employs about 15 people at 7121 Wisconsin Ave., does not expect to move at the start of the year.
Employees affected in the Bethesda office may have other relocation options that would keep them on the East Coast, but nothing has been nailed down yet.
The plan over the next year is we are looking to get all of us under one roof, said Melisa Mowry, a spokeswoman for Universal Sports. There are certainly some options. They are retaining space in [New York City] and we work closely with NBC Olympics offices in Stamford, Conn.
The network, owned by NBC and InterMedia Partners, is available in 56 million homes.
The new HD-ready location in Westlake Village, Calif. contains top-notch production, control rooms, editing, sound and graphics facilities. Dole Food Co. Chairman David Murdock erected the facility, and the network is expected to play a part in promoting health and wellness programming by delivering messages about good nutrition.
The new facility has the ability to accommodate all our employees, said Mowry. The idea is to get a lot of our outside people all together.
Universal Sports President and chief operating officer, Carlos Silva, who is based in Bethesda, will stay with the company, she said.
