Response to Re: Just got back

The reason these runs are so nice is that the old owners of Pac-West spent entire summers grooming all the rocks, etc. out of these runs. If these were mowed in the summer you would be able to ski these runs in a foot of snow. Additionally, the lack of water bar management is as big a problem as the brush. The bare spot issues around the beginner chair and the lower face as well as some of the side runs is a direct result of the water bars not being maintained. I can remember seeing the Hyak Summer Crew (all 3 of them) cleaning out the water bars, laying plywood over them and spreading hay on both sides. This allowed the snow to build up and not get eroded by running water. Additionally, this same crew ran a brush cutter behind a small cat and kept the lower hill and half way up the lower face groomed!!! So remember as much as I have seen people on this web-site complain about the old owners...well at least they ran 5 days a week, ran at night and did a pretty darn good job of maintaining the hill. At this point if you did not have a season pass or a place on the hill, why would you pay to ski at Hyak?
