Response to Re: Dedication Nov 1, 1969

The post office went away in 1981 I'm guessing due to the end of the Milwaukee Road railroad and the employees that used to live and work at Hyak were then gone. Not enough residents after that to support the need is my guess.

Last summer I stopped at a yard sale in Ellensburg and the man who lived at the house hosting the yard sale, around 80 yrs old was a long time employee of the Milwaukee Road same as his dad. He said his mom and dad lived in Rockdale until he was born, then they moved to Hyak and lived until he was 7 or 8 yrs old. He showed me a photo of the building they lived in at Hyak and it looked like a small shack maybe 150sqft. All the Rockdale homes are long gone as well as many of the old Hyak homes. The house up on the slopes of Hyak next to the triple chair is an old railroad home that was drug up the mtn over the snow in the 1970's then placed on a foundation. Would have been interesting to see that when it happened.
