How about learning center and LOCALS! Would be nice to have the ski area show some appreciation for the locals who support and bring in business (via family and friends) to the area. I personally am responsible for bringing 12 paying skier/boarders to the hill so far this year that would not have been here otherwise. I'm sure if you add it up, the Hyak locals are responsible for thousands of extra dollars to the piggy bank of The Summit.
Maybe you all of the locals should consider the options available. Patrol, Ambassador,Instuctor. Don't get me wrong, the locals are supportive. I especially like the hot chocolate chip cookies. The little perks we get for instructing really are not worth what we give. The management fails to realize that us instructors are ensuring the future. I think the resort rewards the locals by keeping Alpy open so late even when they will lose money doing so.
I appreciate your call to join up. That is exactly why some of us (at least us) ended up living full time at the Pass for over 2 decades now. We taught in over 5 different ski schools, now serve in the community, and have encouraged over 900 students (from the school district we taught for in the valley) to become skiers and boarders (the next generation)--we have done it all (except patrolling) and our hats are off to all of you (Hyakers and others) who still serve and get them "hooked" on a lifelong sport. Now we are retired from teaching (school) and ski instruction and follow your progress with joy (watching the kids follow you down the slopes). You deserve that little break you are going to get on the 24th--we celebrate you!! There are many of our friends and neighbors up here at Hyak (and the Pass) who still work full time for the resort (that's why we live here all year round--a lovely community--closely knit now!) Come join us too and live up here and add your talents and gifts--it is growing year by year!
