I was planning to be at Central but plans have changed and now I'm heading to White Pass to ride this weekend. The last forecast I read it is suppose to be sunny or partly cloudy and around 50. Should be good.
So I see that Fir loading skiers up the hill. (It's 2:00 p.m. Friday 4/20.) Anyone know what that's about? I may not have time to go over and quiz 'em.
Yeah, I stopped by and was told it was for employees. I'm gonna wait until the chair stops moving, skin up there with an empty plastic cup, follow the tracks and find where they stashed the kegs. Woot!
I had the opportunity to tour the Bavarian Castle yesterday. There are a couple of units for sale for seriously low prices. The RE listings give a construction date of 1981 for the building, but it looks older. Does anyone know when the B.C. was built? Is there some special reason it's so darn cheap?
I thought it was built in the 1950's? From what I hear, it was suppose to be the start of a new ski resort after the Milwaukee Ski Bowl shut down in 1950 that never materialized. It was also used partially as the Hyak post office. It is cheaper because it is not on the ski slopes most likely.

Jack-- good info, I think you're probably right about its original date of construction. It sure looked 1950s in the electrical panels that I inspected. Maybe they did a big remodel in 1981 and the legal description changed. Otherwise, the structure seems solid, if slightly worn, at this date.
The building was built in 1969 and the Hyak post office was dedicated on Nov 1, 1969. It was the start of what was called an "Old World Village". There was later to be included with this a winter sports complex which must have been where I had heard about a ski area. Here is an article with all the info.
I finally found the photo I have of the post office dedication. Nov 1, 1969.
I read that prior to this post office being built, Hyak was known as the nations smallest post office being 80" tall, 80" wide and 80" deep. Not sure what it was located in but would be cool to see a picture.

The post office went away in 1981 I'm guessing due to the end of the Milwaukee Road railroad and the employees that used to live and work at Hyak were then gone. Not enough residents after that to support the need is my guess.
Last summer I stopped at a yard sale in Ellensburg and the man who lived at the house hosting the yard sale, around 80 yrs old was a long time employee of the Milwaukee Road same as his dad. He said his mom and dad lived in Rockdale until he was born, then they moved to Hyak and lived until he was 7 or 8 yrs old. He showed me a photo of the building they lived in at Hyak and it looked like a small shack maybe 150sqft. All the Rockdale homes are long gone as well as many of the old Hyak homes. The house up on the slopes of Hyak next to the triple chair is an old railroad home that was drug up the mtn over the snow in the 1970's then placed on a foundation. Would have been interesting to see that when it happened.

I lived in the BC during the 83-84 season...along with a bunch of lifties...we were on the ground floor....1st unit on the left...if memory serves me correct the bottom units were 1 bedroom. They were nice back then...what are they asking for them?
As I understand it, there is now only one unit available in the Bavarian Castle, bottom floor on the right, it's a 2 BR, a little rough, bank-owned and listed at $50K (which is LOW).
